Aleka definitely had feelings for Wonder Woman, clouds of unrequited love that benighted her heart lol I loved this scene, it made her death all the more meaningful and I think Sudzuka did an outstanding job. Athena looked a bit silly though, I'm not sure about the coin hip scarf but her shield was all shades of awesome

I kinda felt the story was lacking & as I feared, it looks like the contest has been removed from Diana's origin along with the mystical clay origin. She has been neutered of much of what made her unique. :((

It does tie into a common creation myth but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. It still isn't as cliche as the New 52 origin though.

see i don't believe in using pot/kettle as a means to justify preference. saying it's more unique/less cliche is unfounded based on the numerous literature at our disposal. characters being created by non sexual means are just as cliche as mythical half god children. the only comparison where this isn't true is when limited to just superheros, but even then you have red tornado, superboy, terry mcginis, and several other clones/artificial births/robots characters i can't remember but could probably find if i actually cared enough to lol

But what is really more cliche than the other? Because copying the origins of humanity used in several major religions and then claiming it's unique in some way seems to contradict itself quite badly. (Note: I am not claiming the New 52 version is 'more unique', but noone has said it was)

Boring issue. In the previews a few months ago it said it would tell us how she got her bracers. I hate when they change stuff

I doubt they changed anything. Solicitations are written in advance by marketing people who aren't privy to whats actually going to happen.

Thor, Herakles/ Hercules, (God forbid) Xena. This is what Diana has been reduced to. It has been done in other high profile comic already. Part of what made Diana different was that she was a female warrior from a race of females, no male needed to create her. Just a mother, some clay, & the goddesses (plus Hermes). The contest gave her a reason other than being boy crazy/ stir-crazy to leave the island. Now she is the bastard child of Zeus, like so many, who was not happy at home so she jump the first man she saw & hightailed it outta paradise!

the only thing your basing your comment on that has any bearing in reality is nostalgia. the contest hasn't been confirmed as removed, the origin just cut's off right after she found steve. either way her desire to explore man's world was her motive, not the contest. the contest in past lore was just a means to an end.

Not necessarily. Just because Diana at the time believed it would automatically be her to bring Steve back doesn't mean it would be true. Any good writer could have still worked the contest in there. Just off the top of my head I see the Queen saying Steve cannot stay here and needs to be escorted off the island for multiple reasons. Diana demands it should be her because she found him and her mother disagrees. Instead she decides to hold a contest. Diana wins and you have your story.

Anyone else thought Athena looked creepy as fuck in this issue? An owl woman was just too strange for me to handle. I mean I get she's a Greek goddess and can possibly shape shift but why that shape? I mean, I know Athena is known for her wisdom and the owl is her symbol but still, you know?

Yeah the first thing that sprang to my mind was the Blair Witch, who reportedly was a lady covered head to toe in hair. Not Chiang at his finest imo

I haven't mentioned the contest once in any of the posts I've made regarding Diana's origins, and it's not been the subject of debate in any of the threads I've visited either, so why do you think my comment has anything to do with that? But my two cent's on that: it's not in any way a vital piece of Diana's past, but it still could have taken place leading to the transcript entries from Steve mentioning Diana had to fight off the others.

I was pointing out that it's quite dim to claim the Clay Origins of Diana to be in any way unique when billions of people know by heart a much older version of it.

But hey, we could end up with Athena being the inspiration for the Court of Owls :)

Yeah good idea, owls symbolize wisdom on account of their association with Athena so in a way she kind of inspired them.

@gustavoburciaga1: would have preferred an approach closer to Hera and the peacock motif to the more literal owl look. Have to say this was probably the weakest interpretation of one of the gods in the Azz/Chiang run.

But is it really that odd when you remember that none of Athena's area's of responsibility are linked to how she looks?

That said, all of them appear to have other shapes, so possibly this is just her 'old-school' look.

Ah so this is what happened in Secret Origin 6? Nice, solid issue by the sounds of it. Glad to see Athena's back in the New 52.

At the end of the day it's not a very fetching design, or creative for that matter. It's like Athena performed the fusion dance with her owl and this is the resulting hybrid creature. Leland Owlsley, Hermes and Maleficent are all more successful bird-inspired characters by a mile.

@outside_85: Poseidon's fish look was significantly more successful IMO ... The design for Athena makes it clear she's the Goddess of Wisdom, but it feels overdone to me. Hermes more subtle bird look was more to my taste.
