With the movie drawing nearer to release, I thought we'd discuss an... interesting pitch for a Wonder Woman movie made b Paul Fieg, the director of Bridesmaids and The Heat.

The idea for Feig’s film would’ve involved a Wonder Woman who “keeps hitting the glass ceiling” of the superhero world. Conceived as a lighter action-comedy, this Princess Diana of Themyscira has to contend with male heroes like Batman and Superman who are perhaps not as forward-thinking regarding their female counterpart as they should be. (I think the word “jerks” might’ve come up.) Feig compared this Wonder Woman to the suffragist Cicely Hamilton (who wrote the 1908 "feminist" play Diana of Dobson's).

Thoughts?

I cringed when I read that. I also feel it actually makes it less about the character. Also I feel it just tears down other characters and writes them OOC. That isn't good writing to me.

I only read what was quoted in the OP so there might be more too it.

There's a kernel of truth to that though, there's a glass ceiling for women I think, Superman's not a jerk in-story but he's nevertheless emblematic of the Phallocracy that's the mainstream Superhero genre

I agree with the sentiment that SM is emblematic of mainstream male power fantasy (BM too for that matter) .. I'm not even sure I'd specifically call out the super hero genre on this as it's rampant throughout society ... but this idea for a movie about WW is piss poor. I'd be frustrated in the extreme to see WW portrayed as anything less than already the equal to any of her male counterparts. A poster over at CBR thought this might be an interesting spin for She-Hulk, which I would find amusing since it's more in tune with her general characterization. WW doesn't have a need to break through the glass ceiling as she's outside of the traditional gender norms.

@archizooom: There's a kernel of truth to that though

Maybe but personally I feel that kernel is too meta and it takes away from what the story should be about. I also agree with much of what CSG said in his reply to you. It saves me time in writing it myself.

For Superman and Batman, I agree it would be kind of OOC. For Guy Gardner or Johns' Hal Jordan though, I think it would make more sense.

How would it have been less about the character?

I expected BvS to end like the picture on post #10 and I agree this doesn't work with the characters involved the way it's set up but I could see it more as people creating the glass ceiling instead of SM or BM. Say SM and WW save the day together then the news says SM saved the day but no mention of WW. It could work that way without anyone being OOC.

LOL ... right? I liked the movie well enough, but there were some pretty big holes in the final product ... haven't seen the extended cut yet, but I suspect it's not going to add a ton to the overall film.

That's probably for the best, I wouldn't want to smash your computer over seeing Snyder make Superman even more of an aggressive loner and have you sue me for damages :P

Straight cancer. The Heat made me want to die, thank goodness he wasn't a part of this film. Guy probably kisses every girl's ass he sees and never gets laid.

@dernman: It's not like they were going for a bona fide Wonder Woman movie here with Henry Cavill as Superman, this wouldn't be part of the dcu proper, just a Paul Feig comedy with Sandra Bullock as Wonder Woman or some such. Still though it's not something I'd be jumping up and down to watch

A movie nobody would want to see.
