This is just a spot on PR stunt pulled by Disney and Sony. With the departure of Ironman and Cap in the MCU, the two biggest flagships of MCU were gone. In order to retain its box office dominance, Disney tried to replace them with Spiderman and Captain Marvel.
They failed with "hard-selling" Captain Marvel, they went too hard. Captain Marvel did not reach the expected popularity among fans. So they need to make sure Spiderman doesn't follow its footstep (and they know they don't have to hard sell Spiderman, it is already loved by many fans. Look at Far From Home's box office and reviews).
MCU fans love Spiderman, but is it to the level of Tony Stark's popularity? I think not. Not yet. In the movie Far From Home, the similarities between Spiderman and Ironman were repeatedly shown and implied, their relationship, their tech-savvy minds, even the music Happy played on the plane was to emphasize that point.
So this time instead of over-selling the importance of Spiderman in MCU like they did for Captain Marvel (claiming she is the strongest before the movie even came out), they keep Spiderman relevant in between movies by using this stunt. It is an act performed by both Disney and Sony, to show just how painful it is when Spiderman is "gone", to show the fans they NEED Spiderman in the MCU.
They have successfully caused disappointment, anger and panic to millions of fans all over the world, reminding the fans just how important Spiderman is to the MCU. Fans would then subconsciously project this image into the character. When they see the future Spiderman movies, Spiderman's role will be way more important to them.
Will Spiderman ever replace Ironman's role in the MCU? Probably not, but this stunt is a huge, impactful move (a mellow approach in comparison to what they did for Captain Marvel). And Spiderman is now one step closer to becoming the flagship of the MCU.
