Setting up a good character
Ok, myself having over 600 accounts, it’s never a hard thing for me to come up with the name of a character. However when Rpging, the name you bear is more than just a User Name, it’s the title by which you’ll be known for basically for as long as your character is in “Cannon play”. Ok, now maybe I’m going a bit too far, you can have a user name and it has nothing to do with your character; take my character for example, My account name is Sha, however my characters name is Carmen, catch my drift? Oh whatever you want a Username people will know you by.
I typically don’t pay attention to Viners with numbers in their name I.E Goku45 (If this is you, I’m so sorry just an example). So for this lecture, I shall choose the name Sharpshooter. Now when choosing a name you want to choose something that’s going to coexist with your alignment, most people choose a name that can go either way like “Acer, or Precise” These names don’t scream Hero, Neutral, Villain. Ok for sharpshooter I chose Neutral.
Nope Your not done!!!!
Now you want to write a bio, for your character try to be a specific as possible, use enough detail to get your character’s story across, however you want your bio to be readable, so a few lines or a 1,000 paragraphs might be overkill. Once you’ve chosen your character, and written a bio. Save and let’s go to the next section however we shall return!.
Choosing a Look/ Choosing a skill set.
Now my character’s name is Sharpshooter, so the look I want to choose for it is maybe a character that uses a gun or some type of bow and arrow. I’ll chose Abbey Chase as my “look” You should try and choose a look with a lot of pictures, preferably with a lot of hand to hand pictures since, more than likely Gambler and Kurrent will challenge you to an image war. A lot of the time people choose to make their look, their profile pic and then change their AV to something else, which is fine, but your “look should be posted in the official look thread”.
Now, before you can actually rpg, you need a set of powers, that make your character a walking, flying, swimming or holy ghosting ass kicker! Now, If your character is of the batman type (Street leveler) than most of your skills will include gadgets, your fighting ability will should shine more as a SL; However if you’re going for the Superman type, then you have a range of things, from eye beams to earthquakes however don’t forget your weaknesses. If sharpshooter’s skill set is this
ü Bullet curving
ü Weapon’s master
ü H2h fighter
ü Flexibility
ü Cybernetic implants
Then you need weaknesses that will balance out the powers, however since Sharpshooter is a Human, a simple “Human weaknesses” Should suffice. I’m not evening going to address god characters because they anger me, ask someone else.
* There is a template to How you set your character up, in the Info Gathering Thread. I won't touch it because it's not my thread, but that's a good way for you to set up what kind of character you want.
Rpg Etiquette
One thing about an rpg, is you want to keep everything persistent, (especially in battles) when a rpg starts your powers and characters (Unless specified by the rpg outlines) should remain the same way. However here are some things you don’t do.
ü Don’t lead the story off in another direction (Something I really just stopped dong) if the story is about rebuilding the world, don’t talk about Dinosuars walking the earth that’s a huge W.T.F.
ü Secondly in a battle rpg, what you want to do is describe the location so well that the person your facing can also build on that description. Don’t fight in a world that’s only known to your character, because most times people won’t know what to write about.
ü When battling, end your post with a good lead for the other person, let’s say, me and Talon are fighting, first off if our characters have no prehistory with one another, it’s good to mention that, however if I’m posting first I need to make sure the reason that me and Talon have crossed paths is clear.
Saying “Sha ran through the jungle careful not to trip on any wayward roots, trying to catch her breath she stopped at the mighty waterfall.”
That’s not a good way to end a first post because it never indirectly mentioned Talon, now unless Talon posted that she stumbled upon me at the waterfall, then it’s ok, however that’s what I call “Not pulling your weight” a battle rpg is a story as well you cannot allow one person to bear the load in moving the story, cause it gets boring quick.
When being trained, don’t switch characters just because your rpg better as one character. Listen when you truly master how to rpg, what character you use won’t matter.
There are a few etiquette rules I will go over in part 2.
Joining a team
Most teams require you have some sort of rpg experience, however with or without it, you maybe or may not want to be in a team. You should a team because one if your new, it gets your name recognized around the vine, and besides who wouldn’t want to be friends with MR and Feral Nova?! Join a team that fits in with your characters look and personality. If I created a Superhero team where everyone had Kryptonian powers, it’d be weird having a human shooter on the team understand?
In closing, it will help greatly if you happen to Actually know a few things about comics! Hello it is a comic site, venture out and battle (I wouldn’t battle Buckshot about Wildstorm, or Vance period, because they are know it all’s) but if you draw show it, if your write, then do fan fics but most importantly have fun.
