@valerie_huntington: You've got a great character. Years and years invested into the same character has paid off in a big way. She is nuanced and fleshed out. Pretty smart too, I liked this line--

His every word, every movement, came with a precision too refined for a man who stumbled across internet cash in the age of new fast money.

I remember when I first wandered into RPG I was so impressed by all the characters and their interconnectedness with each other. It made the RPG universe feel alive and real. Now I notice a trend of writing stories with a character, then moving on to a new alt with a new concept. And while I see how that keepings writing feel fresh for people, I've always been drawn to the old style of having one main character that experiences and is effected by the series of events in the canon universe.

@valerie_huntington: I could not possibly agree with you more if I tried. The weight of all that accumulated canon can give a character tremendous gravitas. One of the things I learned studying Gambler in my formative RP years was how he would give a character multiple 'eras' to keep them fresh by changing his look and focus to some degree, giving himself a new location thread and new goals, position and titles but keeping the same character. That made an impression on me and I've tried to replicate that with some of my characters (such as Ivana's mutant terrorist era, her Shogun era and then the relatively short Wolfpack era.)

100%. Gambler’s character when I started was a huge inspiration. The character constantly changed and developed and had different eras, as you described, but the history and origins got carried with him. That’s how a lot of characters were and it made the canon as a whole feel like it was breathing and interwoven.

@valerie_huntington: People who weren't around back then can't really understand it. Gambler was huge. He was the man, period back in those days. And for good reason; he was legitimately the best around (overall) with no one coming anywhere close to him. I learned writing from being interested in writing and reading about it and so forth but I learned RPGing from Gambler. He pretty much defined the game.

That was such a fun, lively era too. Everything flowed and was quick, easy and relaxed. There weren't many barriers to entry, loads of cool comic book storylines to draw from, tons of energy. It was great. You were a big part of the aesthetic of that era too. The Duchess was an icon of the age.

He still is when he takes the time to be around lol. In a league of his own. Him and Sha have always epitomized what RPG should be for me. Style and ingenious.

The changes around here are constant. I think specific egos interrupted the environment that had been established long before I started writing.

Thank you. Valerie feels more refined but Duchess was such a fun character.
