"Thank you for seeing me on such short notice, Mr. McGee," Caitlin says, legs crossed and putting on her famous smile.

Donovan McGee is a rather plump man in his mid 40's wearing the fanciest suit that money can buy on his budget. When one considers that half his fingers are adorned in gold and silver rings, it's up to the imagination how he gets his money. Before coming here, Caitlin did a background check and McGee's tactics as a politician are rather cutthroat. He hates to lose and will remove his competition by any means necessary, but behind the scenes of course. No one needs to know what he does in the shadows.

Donovan tears his eyes away from Caitlin's chest, which the redhead finds offensive but she hides it rather well. "Please, call me Don. Everyone does." A half-truth, but it's better than a straight out lie. Uge! Caitlin hates politicians. Well, with the sole exception being Samson. He gets a free pass. She thinks. If this was a cartoon she'd have red hearts for eyeballs for her favorite hero.

"Of course, Don! It's a pleasure to meet you." Caitlin says, not bothering to hide her bubbly personality. She's learned it has a disarming effect on others, but also tends to create an image of being naive as well. Exactly what she's going for.

Don grunts, eyeing the Primetime Phoenix with a hint of desire in those eyes. "Hungry? We can have dinner if you like?" But the politician is thinking of other things right now and Caitlin is beginning to regret coming here. But she needs to do this. There is no turning back now. She's here to bribe him with a truckload of money with the check she has in her purse.

Still maintaining her smile, she politely refuses, "No thank you, Don. I ate before coming here." She says, totally lying. She has been busy today and hasn't had a single bite to eat but she doesn't say that because this guy is not her type. No way in a million years will she eat with him. Yuck. Poke me with a pitchfork!

Disappointed but not offended by the rejection, he folds his beefy hands on the table, "To business then! Your proposal over the phone sounds enticing. So, why should I drop out of the race against Samson Starr, aside from your obvious association with him? You have five minutes to convince me." He says in a gruff manner, the last sentence clearly indicating that if he's not convinced in a limited time frame then it's over. And if anything, Donovan McGee has a reputation of being rather stubborn.

Caitlin is about to speak her idea to him when her eyes suddenly glow yellow and then it's almost as if she speaks in a different voice. One that is silky, but with a hint of danger laced on that pretty little tongue, "What are you afraid of, Donovan?" She keeps the smile, but it now turns into something rather creepy as the corners move beyond what is humanly possible. Her teeth! The teeth are like...a shark!

Taken a bit aback by this sudden change, as well as the eyes, Don asks her in mild confusion, "Ex-Excuse me?" His heart rate increases, but he tries to keep his cool because he knows he's in the presence of someone who has superpowers. Maybe she's here to intimidate him.

In the blink of an eye, Caitlin rises from her chair and is is now sitting in Don's lap, cupping both his cheeks in her hands as she hisses at him between clenched teeth, "I said...what are you afraid of?"

Don gasps in surprise at the sudden movement, but quickly recovers as he looks her right in those eerie yellow eyes that seem to burn like fiery embers, "Y-You can't intimidate me! SEC--" He begins to scream for security, but it's cut short when Caitlin creates a construct of hard-light energy. It's of a gag around his mouth.

Moving her hands to Don's temples, Caitlin's eyes light up with excitement, "Nevermind, I'm inside your head now." She says in a whisper, "I know what your most afraid of. Your worst fear." Then she blows yellow dust in his face and then his world turns into pure, absolute, terror as he begins to utter a muffled scream as his fears seemingly come to life before him, to haunt him and drag him into the abyss of madness.

Caitlin laughs, drinking up the fear as if it's a sweet vanilla milkshake. Delicious! And she takes it all in, refusing to stop the mental assault on Don's poor mind until he breaks. The poor man never stood a chance....

A bit later...

Caitlin screams until someone comes into the room and they gasp in shock at what they find. "Oh my ***! What happened?" She asks.

Caitlin cups her hand over her mouth, tears streaming down her cheeks, "I...I don't know...he..." The other woman persists even if she herself is trying to hold back her intense emotions, but someone has to stay strong, "Take a deep breath...now tell me what happened."

Caitlin takes a deep breath and tells her that, "We were just talking and Don suddenly clutched his chest, complaining about chest pain. Then he fell to the floor. I tried performing CPR but nothing! Oh ***!"

And that is the story Caitllin sticks with even when the police arrive and ask her questions. Strangely, it's what she honestly remembers. But how can that be? Could someone or something have possessed her before altering her memory? So many questions remain unanswered but the police get their statement and send her home.

Later it will be revealed that Donovan McGee died from massive cardiac arrest. Not terribly surprising since the man happened to be in poor health. The case is closed and no evidence of foul play was found.

Caitlin goes home, not knowing what happened. But something inside of her does and that thing has just claimed her first victim and likely one of many.

Who or what lurks inside of Caitlin Riker?

@ultra-woman:

Samson silently stood with a 'thinking man's' posture. The unsettling news of Donovan McGee's unexpected death had finally reached the Superman of Superheroes. His unique confederacy of Caucasian triplets continued to explain the situation, and who was involved.

"Of course we looked into the phone records. It appears as though she made contact with him before somehow ending up, well, where they ended up." they spoke in harmonic unison.

"What was that girl thinkin." Samson briefly buried his face into his hands in hopes of relieving his mental fatigue. "Selebrity poster child found in the company of political rival who in turns ends up dead."Pursed lips forcefully exhaled his ignited frustration, before deeply inhaling a new found sense of perspective and clarity.

Composure. He reclaimed it. Leadership. His entire campaign had promoted it. Superhuman accountability. The principle tenets of his moral fortitude, and they were being challenged.

"Bring the car around." he calmly demanded, swimming his dark blue executive suit jacket free from behind the back of his chair, and over his shoulder with confident swagger.

"You cant leave Mr. Starr. The polls have already opened. You have to release a statement."

"Start drafting a statement"

"We already ha"

"Not that old one either, a new one. I'll text it to you when I'm done."

Immediately bombarded as he exited his political headquarters by the press and paparazzi, he effortlessly made his way through a small but defined passage following a phalanx of black shaded, black suit wearing superhuman linebackers posing as his personal security.

Though it mattered very little. Where Samson was headed the press would no doubt already be camped out front of, starved for their story. It wouldnt take long for them to start crafting their own narrative either.

"Holy shit its him! ITS SAMSON HEY SAMSON WHATYA HAVE TO SAY ABOUT DONOVAN MCGEE'S DEATH? WHY WAS THE SEQUEL THERE!

The shouts and demands for answers were expected as well as warranted as he towered out from the backseat of the white sedan. But ultimatly yhey were ignored. Samson marched past them with unwavering purpose.

He knocked twice on her apartment door. Slowly but with familiarity. He wasnt angered or disgruntled. He was however, concerned. And he would not let his number 2, his friend, go through it alone. Even if it meant resigning. There would always be another election. There would ever only be one Caitlin Riker. Selebrity was bigger then his ambitious political career. He would do anything to protect it, and its celebrities.

The police had bombarded her with a seemingly endless amount of questioning before finally letting her go, happy with her story. They also collected some evidence from her, which will help with her case later on.

At this point in time, Don's death has not been determined to be a massive heart attack, only later it will. That it's the same night of Mr. McGee's death still has an air of uncertainty. Along with that, people are whispering and wondering if Caitlin is responsible for Don's unfortunate demise. Is it a coincidence she was there and he just happened to die on the night of a possible victory against Samson Starr? And the fact she has powers only makes the situation a little trickier.

It's enough to make Caitlin go on a drinking binge and this time around it's with the White Russian, her favorite alcoholic beverage. It's her sixth one tonight and she is definitely feeling the buzz as she takes a swallow of the sweet-tasting nectar. She stares out the window with a heavy sigh. Her bad luck is returning it seems. She hears a knock on the door, groaning and rolling her eyes in response. She's not in the mood for visitors.

Caitlin lazily makes her way over to the door, leaning down and looking through the peepy hole. Immediately her eyes go wide as she sees Samson Starr himself. She turns around, leaning her back against the door, Oh no! Not him, not now! Panic sets in, but she knows if she leaves he might know. He's just that good.

There is no other option. She cannot avoid him. With another sigh, sliding a delicate hand through her flaming red hair, Caitlin unlocks the door and opens it wide enough for Samson to enter if he wishes. She takes another drink of her beverage before speaking, hiccuping here and there as she does. Clearly, she's drunk, "Hey...*hic*...Shamson." She says, slightly slurring his name as her emerald eyes begin at his chest before traveling up to his face, "Care fer *hic* a drink?"

@theodore_crawly: Actually, she heals fast but not on a superhuman level. It's akin to us claiming to be a fast healer but by no means are we Wolverine. That's Caitlin, hence why she can be drunk. With the Power Cosmic, however, Caitlin could give herself a Healing Factor, but as she would put it, "Why spoil the fun?" And she's drinking a White Russian. Basically, it has coffee, vodka and cream mixed together.

Without hesitation and with the full bed-side compassion of a Saint, Samson immediately removed his jacket before swinging it around the Sequel's shoulders. His free arm quickly ushering his assistant, the driver, and the door man of Caitlin's luxury penthouse to come up to help out.

The added body's serving two purposes simultaneous as they were witnesses, as well as extra hands.

"Text her sponsor. Have em meet us at Hopesprings Metahuman Rehab and Wellness center."The Superman of Superheroes angled his head and neck as to follow along with the Sequel's slowly developing focus as her attention lethargically traveled upwards to finally meet his concerned eyes.

"Come on kid." Slightly motioning without actually breaking the threshold of her apartment, holding his arm in manner waiting for her to nestle in under his protective shield to be safely escorted out and into the company limo. "Everything is gonna be okay. I got u now." Easily taking the bottle from the inebriated icon. Never once asking her about what had happened. Why she had put herself in such a dangerous and compromised position.

Naturally, he already knew. In a sense. Though the details continued to escape him for the time being, he understood her motivation. She cared for him. Perhaps more than anybody outside of his immediate family. Time and time again she had showcased this compassion with selfless acts exclusively employed for his own benefit, and little else.

New York had weighed and measured the team in ways Samson could never have anticipated. Not back then anyway. And though victorious, the wounds they had received from that incursion were deeper and more damaging than anyone could have imagined. This was not a reflection of Caitlin's character but rather of Samson's failure as a leader. Instead of taking care of his team, he had ignored the obvious warning signs and pushed ahead with his own personal agendas, all the while neglecting the foundation of everything he had built.

"This is just a setback, nothing more. Everybody slips Cat. Everybody falls. Nobody ever tells ya that Life is the greatest supervillain of em all. But it is. It'll put ya right on yo'ass. And have no issues doing it again if ya get back up. Jus know that everytime - everytime -you fall, I'll give you my hand to help you back up."

Towering with unwavering dedication to the preservation of his friend, team-member....family, the Superman of Superheroes began to angle himself as to intercept the lawn-camped media members and paparazzi looking for an instant classic of the Sequel's fall from grace and Samson's shameful expressions as his political future dangled from a controversial thread.

"You ready? Okay, come on. Lets go get you better huh." softly welcoming the Sequel to step out and leave with him.

"Um, Mr. Starr? I uh....you're gonna wanna read this. Its from legal..." his assistant interrupted.

"Whatever it is it can wait."

"No sir. I uh...I dont believe it can."

@supreme_sapien:

The additional help is needed because Caitlin is drunk enough to hinder her ability to walk in a straight line. She gratefully accepts the nice jacket that is a bit oversized even for her. “Whas this fer? I’m not cold...” She says between hiccups, “Tanks, though, nishe of you.”

First Samson gets himself injured and even though he’s got that taken care of, Caitlin still blames herself for it. Now the death of Donovan McGee happened while she was there and on her watch. It’s enough to drive someone like her to the end of a bottle and try and bury herself in it.

Caitlin’s offer if he'd like a drink is quickly forgotten when she overhears something about Rehab & the Wellness Center for Metahumans. She’s about to say she doesn’t need that place because she has no problem at all. But then she sees those big brown eyes boring into her own without a hint of judgment or disappointment, only concern. That completely disarms her initial response so instead, she nestles herself into his chest as she leans into him before she is escorted out of the building. She doesn’t even fight back when the bottle is taken from her, letting it go as she is helped inside of the car.

Gone is the world of pain and the haunting of Caitlin’s personal failures. Only the personal safety of Samson Starr remains. His protective aura he is giving shields her, at least for a time, against thoughts of darkness that whisper for her to drink herself to death. And as the Superman of Super-Heroes talks, it’s not about how disappointed he is with her. It’s not about yelling at her, calling her out for being stupid. He doesn’t even raise a hand to strike her. No. Samson does none of these things. Instead, he gives her an inspirational speech.

Samson was there when Caitlin was on the street, a penniless wreck. He hadn’t asked questions then nor does he now. He picked her up and gave her a job when no one else would. Then when she slipped and fell from her perch, Mister Cybertron doesn’t even bat an eyelash as he, yet again, picked her up once more. To tell her that when life knocked her down, he would be there to help her get back up again.

Why does he keep believing in me? Caitlin thinks to herself as she listens to him, head resting on his big muscular arm. She’s puzzled as to why, but perhaps Samson just has a soft spot for beaten and battered women like her who keep getting knocked down. When the car, at last, stops at the Rehab center, Caitlin timidly shrinks from it as she gives a slight whimper. She doesn’t want to go. But Samson has been so supportive.

Had Samson handled this in any other way, the redhead would have likely exploded at him with such fury that would have embarrassed her and leave him forced to defend himself. But the man had proven himself a true Superman by handling this in the best possible way. Instead of confronting her, he inspires her. Instead of judging her, he shows compassion. Instead of lecturing her, he shows her she has a problem and is there to help if she needs it.

A tear slips down Caitlin’s cheek as she takes a deep breath, nodding weakly to answer him when he asks if she’s ready but she’s nervous beyond belief. She is helped out of the car and the paparazzi and media are there to greet them. But Caitlin is protected as she refuses to answer any questions, refusing to give them any ‘meat’ to the story they want to craft.

She wipes away a tear...
She wipes away a tear...

Reality hits as Caitlin finds herself staring at the Rehab center. Even in her drunken and addled state, she knows where she is. She’s confronted by a problem that she has refused to face for the past couple of years and almost admitted to while on the set of the Red Sonja reboot. She’s an alcoholic. There’s no escaping that. She wipes away a tear from her cheek as she overhears the assistant inform Samson he needs to hear something important and it cannot wait.

The time is now to start recovering, but it’s hard to think straight! She reaches up and touches her favorite hero’s cheek, “It’s fine, Shamson,” She says, again slurring his name but not intentionally, “I’ll be okay. Take care of that, whatever it is.” She hiccups between words.

Teresa Carson, the Sponsor that was texted earlier, comes along just in the nick of time, “Don’t worry, Mr. Starr, I’ll help with this. She won’t lose me as her sponsor and we’ll work with Selebrity to spin this in the best way possible. She’ll get back on her feet. She’s in good hands, I’ll take it from here.” The woman smiles, offering to take Caitlin off of Samson’s hands.

Should Samson be relieved that Caitlin is now in good hands, then Teresa helps the redhead into the Rehab center and helps her sign up. But as the Primetime Phoenix enters this program, the so-called sponsor smiles maliciously as her disguise momentarily fails and reveals, for a second, the face of Mara. It’s of the Sorceress who has ruined Caitlin's life. And as the Ultra-Amazon is led to her room by the Rehab Center’s staff, ‘Teresa’ utters a dark laugh. One that tells of dark days to come for the fallen ‘Sequel’ of Selebrity.
