History and Culture:

La Nouvelle-Orléans (New Orleans) was founded May 7, 1718, by the French Mississippi Company, under the direction of Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, on land inhabited by the Chitimacha. It was named for Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, who was Regent of the Kingdom of France at the time. His title came from the French city of Orléans.

The French colony was ceded to the Spanish Empire in the Treaty of Paris (1763). During the American Revolutionary War, New Orleans was an important port for smuggling aid to the rebels, transporting military equipment and supplies up the Mississippi River. Bernardo de Gálvez y Madrid, Count of Gálvez successfully launched a southern campaign against the British from the city in 1779. New Orleans (Spanish: Nueva Orleans) remained under Spanish control until 1803, when it reverted briefly to French oversight. Nearly all of the surviving 18th-century architecture of the Vieux Carré (French Quarter) dates from the Spanish period, the most notable exception being the Old Ursuline Convent.

Napoleon sold Louisiana (New France) to the United States in the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Thereafter, the city grew rapidly with influxes of Americans, French, Creoles, and Africans. Later immigrants were Irish, Germans, and Italians. Major commodity crops of sugar and cotton were cultivated with slave labor on large plantations outside the city.

The Haitian Revolution ended in 1804 and established the second republic in the Western Hemisphere and the first republic led by Black people. It had occurred over several years in what was then the French colony of Saint-Domingue. Thousands of refugees from the revolution, both whites and free people of color (affranchis or gens de couleur libres), arrived in New Orleans, often bringing African slaves with them. While Governor Claiborne and other officials wanted to keep out additional free Black men, the French Creoles wanted to increase the French-speaking population. As more refugees were allowed in Louisiana, Haitian émigrés who had first gone to Cuba also arrived. Many of the white Francophones had been deported by officials in Cuba in retaliation for Bonapartist schemes in Spain.

Nearly 90 percent of these immigrants settled in New Orleans. The 1809 migration brought 2,731 whites; 3,102 free persons of African descent; and 3,226 enslaved persons of African descent, doubling the city's population. The city became 63 percent black in population, a greater proportion than Charleston, South Carolina's 53 percent.

The Battle of New Orleans (1815)

During the final campaign of the War of 1812, the British sent a force of 11,000 soldiers, marines, and sailors, in an attempt to capture New Orleans. Despite great challenges, General Andrew Jackson, with support from the U.S. Navy on the river, successfully cobbled together a motley military force of: militia from Louisiana and Mississippi, including free men of color, U.S. Army regulars, a large contingent of Tennessee state militia, Kentucky riflemen, Choctaw fighters, and local privateers (the latter led by the pirate Jean Lafitte), to decisively defeat the British troops, led by Sir Edward Pakenham, in the Battle of New Orleans on January 8, 1815. The armies had not learned of the Treaty of Ghent which had been signed on December 24, 1814. (However, the treaty did not call for cessation of hostilities until after both governments had ratified the treaty, and the US government did not ratify it until February 16, 1815.) The fighting in Louisiana had begun in December 1814 and did not end until late January, after the Americans held off the British Navy during a ten-day siege of Fort St. Philip. (The Royal Navy went on to capture Fort Bowyer near Mobile, before the commanders received news of the peace treaty.)

As a principal port, New Orleans played a major role during the antebellum era in the Atlantic slave trade. Its port also handled huge quantities of commodities for export from the interior and imported goods from other countries, which were warehoused and transferred in New Orleans to smaller vessels and distributed the length and breadth of the vast Mississippi River watershed. The river in front of the city was filled with steamboats, flatboats, and sailing ships. Despite its role in the slave trade, New Orleans at the same time had the largest and most prosperous community of free persons of color in the nation, who were often educated and middle-class property owners.

Dwarfing in population the other cities in the antebellum South, New Orleans had the largest slave market in the domestic slave trade, which expanded after the United States' ending of the international trade in 1808. Two-thirds of the more than one million slaves brought to the Deep South arrived via the forced migration of the domestic slave trade. The money generated by the sale of slaves in the Upper South has been estimated at 15 percent of the value of the staple crop economy. The slaves represented half a billion dollars in property. An ancillary economy grew up around the trade in slaves—for transportation, housing and clothing, fees, etc., estimated at 13.5 percent of the price per person. All of this amounted to tens of billions of dollars (2005 dollars, adjusted for inflation) during the antebellum period, with New Orleans as a prime beneficiary.

After the Louisiana Purchase, numerous Anglo-Americans migrated to the city. The population of the city doubled in the 1830s and by 1840, New Orleans had become the wealthiest and the third-most populous city in the nation. Large numbers of German and Irish immigrants began arriving in the 1840s, working as laborers in the busy port. In this period, the state legislature passed more restrictions on manumissions of slaves, and virtually ended it in 1852.

In the 1850s, white Francophones remained an intact and vibrant community; they maintained instruction in French in two of the city's four school districts (all were white). In 1860, the city had 13,000 free people of color (gens de couleur libres), the class of free, mostly mixed-race people that developed during French and Spanish rule. The census recorded 81 percent as mulatto, a term used to cover all degrees of mixed race. Mostly part of the Francophone group, they constituted the artisan, educated and professional class of African Americans. Most blacks were still enslaved, working at the port, in domestic service, in crafts, and mostly on the many large, surrounding sugar cane plantations.

Mississippi River steamboats at New Orleans, 1853.

After growing by 45 percent in the 1850s, by 1860, the city had nearly 170,000 people The city was a destination for immigrants. It had grown in wealth, with a "per capita income [that] was second in the nation and the highest in the South." The city had a role as the "primary commercial gateway for the nation's booming mid-section." The port was the third largest in the nation in terms of tonnage of imported goods, after Boston and New York, handling 659,000 tons in 1859.

As the French Creole elite feared, during the Civil War their world changed. In 1862, following the occupation by the Navy after the Battle of Forts Jackson and St. Philip, Northern forces under Gen. Benjamin F. Butler, a respected state lawyer of the Massachusetts militia, occupied the city. Later New Orleans residents nicknamed him as "Beast" Butler, because of a military order he issued. After his troops had been assaulted and harassed in the streets by Southern women, his order warned that future such occurrences would result in his men treating such "ladies" as those "plying their avocation in the streets", implying that they would treat the women like prostitutes. Accounts of this spread like wildfire across the South and the North. He also came to be called "Spoons" Butler because of the alleged looting that his troops did while occupying New Orleans.

Butler abolished French language instruction in city schools; statewide measures in 1864 and, after the war, 1868 further strengthened English-only policy imposed by federal representatives. With the predominance of English speakers in the city and state, that language had already become dominant in business and government. By the end of the 19th century, French usage in the city had faded significantly; it was also under pressure from new immigrants: English speakers such as the Irish, and other Europeans, such as the Italians and Germans. However, as late as 1902 "one-fourth of the population of the city spoke French in ordinary daily intercourse, while another two-fourths was able to understand the language perfectly," and as late as 1945, one still encountered elderly Creole women who spoke no English. The last major French language newspaper in New Orleans, L'Abeille de la Nouvelle-Orléans (New Orleans Bee), ceased publication on December 27, 1923, after ninety-six years. According to some sources, Le Courrier de la Nouvelle Orleans continued until 1955.

The starving people of New Orleans under Union occupation during the Civil War, 1862

As the city was captured and occupied early in the war, it was spared the destruction through warfare suffered by many other cities of the American South. The Union Army eventually extended its control north along the Mississippi River and along the coastal areas of the State. As a result, most of the southern portion of Louisiana was originally exempted from the liberating provisions of the 1863 "Emancipation Proclamation" issued by President Abraham Lincoln. Large numbers of rural ex-slaves and some free people of color from the city volunteered for the first regiments of Black troops in the War. Led by Brig. Gen. Daniel Ullman (1810–1892), of the 78th Regiment of New York State Volunteers Militia, they were known as the "Corps d'Afrique." While that name had been used by a militia before the war, that group was composed of free people of color. The new group was made up mostly of former slaves. They were supplemented in the last two years of the War by newly organized United States Colored Troops, who played an increasingly important part in the war.

Violence throughout the South, especially the Memphis Riots of 1866 followed by the New Orleans Riot in July of that year, resulted in Congress passing the Reconstruction Act and the Fourteenth Amendment, to extend the protections of full citizenship to freedmen and free people of color. Louisiana and Texas were put under the authority of the "Fifth Military District" of the United States during Reconstruction. Louisiana was eventually readmitted to the Union in 1868; its Constitution of 1868 granted universal manhood suffrage and established universal public education. Both blacks and whites were elected to local and state offices. In 1872, lieutenant governor P.B.S. Pinchback, who was of mixed race, succeeded Henry Clay Warmouth for a brief period as Republican governor of Louisiana, becoming the first governor of African descent of an American state. (The next African American to serve as governor of an American state was Douglas Wilder, elected in Virginia in 1989.) New Orleans even operated a racially-integrated public school system during this period.

New Orleans Mardi Gras in the early 1890s.

Wartime damage to levees and cities along the Mississippi River adversely affected southern crops and trade for the port city for some time. The federal government contributed to restoring infrastructure, but it took time. The nationwide financial recession and Panic of 1873 also adversely affected businesses and slowed economic recovery.

From 1868, elections in Louisiana were marked by violence, as white insurgents tried to suppress black voting and disrupt Republican gatherings. Violence continued around elections. The disputed 1872 gubernatorial election resulted in conflicts that ran for years. The "White League", an insurgent paramilitary group that supported the Democratic Party, was organized in 1874 and operated in the open, violently suppressing the black vote and running off Republican officeholders. In 1874, in the Battle of Liberty Place, 5,000 members of the White League fought with city police to take over the state offices for the Democratic candidate for governor, holding them for three days. By 1876, such tactics resulted in the white Democrats, the so-called Redeemers, regaining political control of the state legislature. The federal government gave up and withdrew its troops in 1877, ending Reconstruction.

White Democrats passed Jim Crow laws, establishing racial segregation in public facilities. In 1889, the legislature passed a constitutional amendment incorporating a "grandfather clause" that effectively disfranchised freedmen as well as the propertied people of color free before the war. Unable to vote, African Americans could not serve on juries or in local office, and were closed out of formal politics for several generations in the state. It was ruled by a white Democratic Party. Public schools were racially segregated and remained so until 1960.

New Orleans' large community of well-educated, often French-speaking free persons of color (gens de couleur libres), who had been free prior to the Civil War, sought to fight back against Jim Crow. They organized the Comité des Citoyens (Citizens Committee) to work for civil rights. As part of their legal campaign, they recruited one of their own, Homer Plessy, to test whether Louisiana's newly enacted Separate Car Act was constitutional. Plessy boarded a commuter train departing New Orleans for Covington, Louisiana, sat in the car reserved for whites only, and was arrested. The case resulting from this incident, Plessy v. Ferguson, was heard by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1896. The court ruled that "separate but equal" accommodations were constitutional, effectively upholding Jim Crow measures. In practice, African-American public schools and facilities were underfunded in Louisiana and across the South. The Supreme Court ruling contributed to this period as the nadir of race relations in the United States. The rate of lynchings of black men was high across the South, as other states also disfranchised blacks and sought to impose Jim Crow to establish white supremacy. Anti-Italian sentiment in 1891 contributed to the hanging of 11 Italians charged with murder. It was the largest mass lynching in U.S. history.

Throughout New Orleans' history, until the early 20th century when medical and scientific advances ameliorated the situation, the city suffered repeated epidemics of yellow fever and other tropical and infectious diseases.

Religion:

New Orleans' colonial history of French and Spanish settlement has resulted in a strong Catholic tradition. Catholic missions administered to slaves and free people of color, establishing schools for them. In addition, many late 19th and early 20th century European immigrants, such as the Irish, some Germans, and Italians, were Catholic. In New Orleans and the surrounding Louisiana Gulf Coast area, the predominant religion is Catholicism. Within the Archdiocese of New Orleans (which includes not only the city but the surrounding Parishes as well), 35.9% percent of the population is Roman Catholic. The influence of Catholicism is reflected in many of the city's French and Spanish cultural traditions, including its many parochial schools, street names, architecture, and festivals, including Mardi Gras.

New Orleans also notably has a distinctive variety of Louisiana Voodoo, due in part to syncretism with African and Afro-Caribbean Roman Catholic beliefs. The fame of the voodoo practitioner Marie Laveau contributed to this, as did New Orleans' distinctly Caribbean cultural influences. Although the tourism industry has strongly associated Voodoo with the city, only a small number of people are serious adherents to the religion.

Jewish settlers, primarily Sephardim, were part of New Orleans from the early nineteenth century. some migrated from the communities established in the colonial years in Charleston, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia. The merchant Abraham Cohen Labatt helped found the first Jewish congregation in Louisiana in the 1830s, which became known as the Portuguese Jewish Nefutzot Yehudah congregation (as he and some other members were Sephardic Jews, whose ancestors had lived in Portugal and Spain). Jews from eastern Europe came as immigrants in the late 19th and 20th centuries. By the 21st century, there were 10,000 Jews in New Orleans. This number dropped to 7,000 after the disruption of Hurricane Katrina. In the wake of Katrina, all New Orleans synagogues lost members, but most re-opened in their original locations. The exception was Congregation Beth Israel, the oldest and most prominent Orthodox synagogue in the New Orleans region. Beth Israel's building in Lakeview was destroyed by flooding. After seven years of holding services in temporary quarters, a rebuilt synagogue was consecrated in August 2012 on land purchased from its new neighbor, the Reform Congregation Gates of Prayer in Metairie.

The city has seen a recent increase in Voodoo culture and adherents with the arrival of a woman named The Swamp Queen by local residents. Though the so called swamp queen is no adherent to Voodoo, good luck telling local residents that. The rumored appearance of undead at her swamp plantation have fueled most of the fire. Cults of Voodoo have sprung up in dark places around the city where people who barely understand the powers they are attempting to control have created a resurgence in the practice of the old religion. Rumors suggest some prominent members of the city have joined the cults, though no positive proof has ever been found. What has long been a curiosity tapped for tourism purposes has now created a dark underbelly where crime lords and politicians are rumored to intermingle.

Crime and Passion:

New Orleans has begun to slide into darkness, it's not visible on the surface but as criminal lords moved out of Grimm City once it was brought back under the heel of the US government some of them moved into New Orleans. Here they have found purchase in the dark and increasing world of the Voodoo cults where they twist an old religion for their own purposes and use the cults not as a place to practice beliefs, but as a place to meet people of influence, work with one another and create deals with corrupt politicians...or create corrupt politicians with blackmail.

In a city as diverse and varied as New Orleans, such activities become lost in the woodwork. While crime and corruption are on the rise they have not yet begun to threaten the stability of the city itself. The nightlife of New Orleans remains a thriving industry in its own right and is the mingling center of the city's elite and powerful. Those who wish to ingratiate themselves with the important members of the city must do so first by attending the many parties of the wealthy where a unique combination of Southern Class and New Orleans Culture combine in vast parties hosted in the oldest buildings in the city.

Attendance to one of these parties is by invitation only and invitations are issued as each new party is planned out. Those who are left off are cut out from some of the most important circles in the city while those who are invited have access to everyone from Mayors and City Council members to State Senators, the ultra wealthy movers and shakers of the city and people of significant standing. Invitations to the parties can be solicited if someone knows a person who is already invited or otherwise included in the party (such as a planner). It is seen as poor form to offer money in exchange for an invitation but it has been known to work on occasion. All of these parties are costume parties and all costumes must involve a mask of some form.

The increase in crime in the city has initially occurred in the districts hit hardest by Katrina where there are more abandoned buildings and houses and where economic recovery remains slow. Police presence has been stretched thin, resulting in the development of New Orleans style vigilantes, most of whom are local people with some skill and perhaps a meta human ability or two.

The Voodoo Cult:

Traditional practitioners of Voodoo have been forced out of their own scene by an increase in meta-human and corrupt members of society joining what has rapidly become an underground cult. There are two kinds of Voodoo cultist, the ones who can wield voodoo powers as an actual ability...and the ones who think they should burn the bones of their chicken. The vast majority of cultists are people who want access to power, many of them are poorer than those who can attend the big parties of the elite but others are criminal lords, secret evil doers and other such undesirables. These people only loosely practice the religion they ascribe to but will often use it as a threat to the uneducated, perhaps along with a few parlor tricks to compound the threat.

No Caption Provided

The other portion of Voodoo cultists is much smaller but far more power in a true, physical (or in this case meta-physical) sense. Voodoo powers vary significantly and are often labeled by others as simply another name for magic. Of those who practice Voodoo in New Orleans the most powerful is Lady Dominque, a heavily french accented woman of slave descent who is deeply feared by even the most powerful individuals in the city. Crime lords and corrupt politicians alike sometimes seek an audience with her in hopes she might use some fraction of her power to improve their prospects. Though it is said she has sometimes helped such people, she has never chosen a side in any of the underworld's conflicts and steadfastly refuses to do so. All Voodoo Cultists in the city refer to Lady Dominque as the ultimate expert and highest authority figure in their religion...though many are those who wield her name to sound frightening, few are those who have actually met with her.

---------------------------

OC:

Usual rules apply.

Lady Dominique is NOT an NPC, do not treat her as such. If you wish to speak with her, contact me and we will work something out.

Vael is known in the city, a character wishing to speak with her can find the location of her Plantation by speaking to anyone of influence in New Orleans, especially those in the Voodoo Cult.

Please feel free to flesh out the city further with the creation of sub-locations.

Once it was more or less agreed that they would be going with her Xae smiled and tapped a button on her wrist. Without further ado the entire group was suddenly teleported. When they re-materialized it was in a private room of a very expensive hotel. One entire wall was nothing but a big giant window looking out over the french quarter of New Orleans. Xae smiled a bit and motioned to the room. "You can stay here as long as you like, a friend of mine owns the entire hotel chain. Consider it an all expenses paid vacation while you figure out what to do next."

Xae walked to the window, turning her back on the teens and gazing outside. "I'll do what I can to help you, anything you need if I can provide it, I'll do so and if you guys get in over your heads...let's just say the government and I don't get a long anyway." She turned to face them again, the smile gone from her face. "But I don't want to hold your hands, I don't want to be here all the time doing whatever it is a bunch of hatchlings need done in this situation. I'm not your mother and I'm not your boss...I'm just someone that would like to help when and if she can. Take some advice though...the government is slow but it's relentless, the sooner you can clear your name the better, especially with this filthy piece of crap currently running the White House. Public opinion can be your enemy...and it can be your weapon against the government."

Kaede wasn't sure about the whole teleportation thing, if that was what it was called. She'd never been teleported before. She hadn't known that was an option. Given her innate dislike of automobile travel, she rather wished it were more often an option. She went over to the window as well - that was where the sun came in from, after all. She looked down for a few moments, then inquired, "Where are we?" Some city, but not one familiar. Wet and warm, though. She could almost taste the humidity in the air. The sun felt right, though, so it must be somewhere on Earth. Kaede hadn't realized she had a sensitivity to that until their little jaunt in space, but apparently there was something there.

I wonder.... How much of a sensitivity was it? The sun was slightly different even on different places on Earth. New York was a little north of her parents' cabin in Japan. She tried to think about how those places felt, to her. This place felt... a bit more south, yet. By about the same amount. She tried to trace lines on a globe in her head, and for the first time in her life actually wished more time had been spent on geography in school. The air quality had a tint in it, like the ocean wasn't too far away. "American south?" she hazarded a guess, because she didn't think their host would have taken them to a different continent without mentioning it. Also, she assumed teleporting was fast, and it would have been dark on another continent, or at least a different time of day. "Somewhere on the Gulf of Mexico?"

Katrin Romanoff's world revolved around her fiddle. Pete's fiddle, really, but it was hers now to care for and play on. He'd left it to her as a parting gift when his human systems...deactivated. Kat didn't like thinking of death at times like this. She played to keep her mind off of it and to earn money to keep her systems running so she could play some more. It was a vicious cycle, but a better one than the alternative to use her government-programmed powers to kill for the highest bidder. No. Valkyrie 004 was not going to become a rich man's plaything. She was above that. Dr. Peters had helped her get to that point. So she travelled and played, earning money to travel and play. Homeless but as happy as she could hope to get.

"To be honest I don't either, though I appreciate the help its our mess not yours." Lizzy remarked not wanting to drag someone into the issues. Especially considering part of her felt it was her who'd dragged the team into this anyway, resisting orders of Ron for the sake of others. Standing beside Kaede it was rather easy thanks to technology for the nerd to figure out the location. "It's New Orleans, maybe we can go check out the Garden District sometime?" The engineer remarked knowing personally she'd probably be bored out of her mind. The mix of gardens and plant life that existed alongside the beautiful architecture did sound like something Kaede might like however. Returning to the issue at hand she turned back to the team, as well as Gale should she choose to listen in.

"Gona be honest, it totally might backfire. However I plan to go to Locksleys publicly and peacefully in an attempt to tell anyone willing to listen of Neuro's plans. Bad as the president is I don't want to see a bunch of people hurt by Neuro or to know I had a chance to act but didn't." Of course Lizzy wanted it to be a team effort, to help further shake the accusations and because in truth Lizzy was less confident then she put on. She wouldn't force it though they all had to do what they felt right and it might very well not be the best move the engineer knew. She'd be going in without any of her defenses when she was considered a terrorist while specifically asking to see heroes and the president. It wasn't a particularly winning combination, it felt right to her though and so shaking her off course wasn't particularly plausible.

"You shouldn't go alone, Lizzy," Kaede told her. "That's not safe." That wasn't safe even if you were a teen girl who wasn't wanted by the government on suspicion of terrorism. The added complication just made it a bad idea for even more reasons. "I can go with you if you like. I don't think my presence will incite much violence. Or notice, even. Who is Locksley?" Maybe some other super hero that everyone else had heard of except her. She wouldn't have been surprised by that. She didn't let it bother her, though.

After that, though, maybe they could come back here. Anywhere that had something called a 'Garden District' was somewhere worth some additional exploration, in Kaede's opinion. Also, it was kind of nice to be... away from the insanity.

The insanity that Lizzy wanted to rush right back into. Because it's the right thing to do. And it was, Kaede knew. But right wasn't easy. And maybe if they could talk to people, then everything would settle down a bit, and they would have a chance to be... well, probably not normal. But a chance to be themselves.

"No idea who it is" she remarked with a shrug. She just knew of the club and thought it'd be fun to visit not to mention for what she had in mind she wanted something public and hospitable. Teleporting to discreet rooms may be nice and hidden moon bases had their advantages but it wasn't what Lizzy wanted. She didn't do stealth, she wanted to be public and a hero of the modern age. "Nothing feels safe to me, that's why I do this" she remarked with a rather hushed tone not wanting really to say such aloud. She had the brains to make a difference so she'd do her best to put such to use, she was as weak as a civilian if not more and could relate to what they felt. It sucked so it was up to her she felt to try and make such fears fade away. "I'd love for you to tag along, no pressure though. Also no drinking got it, ya may be a wild party animal but we got an image to maintain." Of course she injected humor into her statement but Lizzy wasn't joking. Seeing herself as a bit of a big sister she'd be swift to deny the youngest of the team whatever fireball the club likely tried to hand out.

It had been.... over fifteen years since Cormac had enjoyed music in any form. Life had been too fast paced, brutal and simply busy. Walking through New Orlean's was a quiet affair for Cormac, having just completed an errand on his search to acquire Black Eden. Katrin's music somehow caused Cormac to stop, looking at her and simply listening. It was the best he had ever heard a fiddle being played in his entire life. "What the fck am I doing," he abruptly realised. enjoying music?!? He was a created killer, not this. With a huff the Knightfall Weapon snarled past Katrin as somebody else brushed past and carelessly pushed him, stumbling slightly his entire heavy metal frame fell into the path of the woman by mistake...

"I'll be around." Xae said. "Keep an eye out on each other and stay safe. There are those you can trust but don't trust just anyone either. Remember that whatever happens, it's you guys first, worry about the rest later. Soldiers have to stick together." She said, inadvertently referring to soldiers, reminded more of her own past than of their present. "Anyway, I'll be around, use the rooms as long as you need and remember...you have people on your side. There are others who agree with you." Xae smiled a bit and snapped her fingers, vanishing from the room.

"If you guys don't mind some additional company..." The Custodian ventured. "I'd like to go as well. In fact...I think we should probably all go. We could use some time to relax, and we can use that same time to figure out what we're going to do and how close on our heels the government is. They don't know we're staying here so we should make sure we keep it that way. We'll stay here at nights and figure out what we're going to do, don't talk about too much while we're out in public, never know who might hear us."

In a stationary playing position, Katrin wouldn't have been effected by the man's fall. However, she had become engrossed in her own thoughts that were portrayed through the sounds of her instrument, and her body had begun sidestepping and moving along with the beat, her eyes closed. She felt his sturdy, heavy body jostle hers and snapped suddenly back into reality as her mechanical side calculated falling positions before she fell to the ground, barely managing to save her instrument from splintering against the sidewalk.

"Thanks again, I may be against hiding but theres no denying you've been a lot of help." The nerd remarked to Gale before turning back to her friends. Part of Lizzy felt guilty, she was rushing right into things which might not be the style of everyone else. She couldn't help it though she wanted to be a hero, to help people and that meant her gaming light hearted image had to fuse with the tech loving defender of justice and what not. "What no this is a Kaede and Lizzy venture only." She remarked with sarcasm as apparent as her neon colored mech "of course you can come along Dia. Hopefully we can clear up some of the air and then enjoy the club. I'm not stopping, people need help so I'm going to be there. It'd be nice if they didn't try and shoot me as I did so. Neuro may have given up on the ideals but I haven't" the idea of continuing work as a hero clearly meaning almost as much to the accidental murderer as the friends she'd made by becoming one.

@renegade84: @_gaige_: @the_custodian:

Some time later

Which may be before or after the Clubhouse thing, I don't know how long that's going to end up taking, but I'm bored. Also, Kaede was here.

Kaede returned after being gone while, looking much more like the girl she'd always been, which was to say mud-splattered, with a couple twigs in her hair. She pulled one of them out cheerfully as she entered the room, waved vaguely in the direction of the team, and went to occupy the bathroom. Her clothes she dropped in a bag for the housekeeping to take down to the hotel laundry, then she stepped into the shower, emptying one of the miniature shampoo bottles into her hand. She reflected that if they were going to be there for a while, maybe they should send out for some normal-sized toiletries, because with four young women in one room, they were likely to go through an awful lot of those teeny-tiny bottles. The vines that were supposed to be in her hair coiled neatly out of the way so she could wash around them and divest herself of the random bits of plant matter that she had collected incidentally. Every ecosystem seemed to have some variant of tiny burr thing that got stuck everywhere, and the New Orleans swamps weren't much better. She started picking them out carefully with a fine toothed comb and a grimace at the little stickers, then momentarily reconsidered, poking them in turn and convincing them that they were, in fact, meant to be smooth. Without the little prickly bits, they slipped right out.

That was a neat trick. She'd have to remember that. It was useful.

At least... it was useful if you spent a lot of time traipsing around the backwoods. Probably not too useful if it came to combat. Kaede sighed. It wasn't that she even wanted to fight, she hated the idea... it was just that it might have been nice to feel like she could have done something in one if pressed.

No, I'm not going to worry about that, not right now. Even little things, like learning to use my abilities to get stickers out of my hair, well, that means I'm learning something. Little things provide a background for larger things. I have enough to worry about with who I am, I certainly don't need to go worrying about who I'm not.

She slipped on one of the hotel's robes, which was white, fluffy, and One Size Fits Most, meaning that there was probably one person out there who fit in it, but it certainly wasn't her... but at least it would keep her hair from dripping on her clothes while it dried. That accomplished, she relinquished control of the bathroom and went back out into the suite proper, plopping down in an armchair next to the window. There was still a bit of light left, and she shifted into it and closed her eyes. Things were good. She had been spending too much time indoors lately. She felt much more at peace with herself than she had in quite some time. Probably since she had left home.

She frowned slightly at that, then reached over and picked her cell up off the table, dialing in a number before she had the chance to argue against herself. It barely even had a chance to ring before it connected. She half-smiled. "Hi, Daddy."

"Kaede. Thank goodness. We've been worried."

"Sorry. I've been busy."

"I know, but... all that news about Nebraska....?"

"I'm in New Orleans, Daddy." She felt a little bad about that one: while not technically a lie, it was... okay, it was basically a lie. But she didn't want to discuss Nebraska. Especially not with her family. And it was probably better for everyone if no one knew she had been there, her family included.

"Oh. All right. Are you settling in?"

"I think so," she answered, "It's... a lot to take in."

"Making new friends?"

She smiled. "Yes." That was entirely truthful. It probably wasn't the answer he'd expect, either, because Kaede had never been good at making friends.

"Oh. That's good, sweetie. Everything okay?"

"Mostly." She paused, shrugged even though he couldn't see it. "I miss home. I miss you and mom."

"I'm sorry. You know, you're always welcome home any time you like."

"I know. But I need to be here right now."

"I understand. But you are welcome, any time you like. You and your friends as well."

"Thanks, Daddy." She paused, considering, "What about the Arboretum?" Her family maintained a vacation home in Japan. She'd always loved it there.

"Any time you like. Just call if you need a flight, I'll send a jet for you."

"Okay. I'll keep it in mind. That might be nice." Might be... necessary, if things in the US got weird. After Nebraska.

"You ought to call your mother, she misses you."

"Maybe later. I should probably go."

"Okay. It was good to hear from you."

"Mhm. Bye, Dad. I love you." She ended the call, and set the phone down. She wasn't quite ready to talk to her mother - her mother was a lot better at asking questions than her father was. Or, at least, a lot more persistent and less willing to accept Kaede's non-answers. She'd save that for another day, when she'd figured out what to say. For now, she turned her attention back to the window, watching the sub sparkle over the city.

"You look lost in thought." The Custodian said as she came up beside Kaede, drew a seat out with a hand gesture and sat down beside her to look out the window with her. "Lot of thinking going on lately huh? Well, I think you've heard everyone's stories, but I don't think any of us have taken the time to hear yours."

She smiled a little and floated as a pair of glasses filled with ice water floated over and landed on the window sill. No ghosts here though, just the careful manipulation of gravitons. "I'm sorry everything has gotten so complicated, if I had known..." She sighed and picked up her glass, taking a sip from it. "It was all very different before Nebraska. So, if you don't mind a little girl talk, share with me what's on your mind, I'd be happy to listen...or leave you to look quietly out of a window if you'd prefer."

"It's not your fault," Kaede said simply. "The world is just a lot more chaotic than I thought it was, I think. I grew up very... sheltered." That was probably the understatement of the year, right there. "All this... none of it mattered. I always had my gardens. I never thought much about the rest of the world, and no one ever asked me to. So, it's... it's an adjustment. And being away from home is an adjustment. I miss my family. I miss my gardens. I miss... the familiarity, I think. Knowing where I was."

She watched The Custodian a minute, then asked, quietly, "Do you miss your home, at all?" She'd said she missed her brother, but Kaede didn't know anything about where they had grown up. She wondered if the Custodian had ever had a special place to call her own, and if she did, whether she missed it. Whether she ever wished she could go back, or why she stayed away. But maybe that was too much to ask.

"The world can be a scary place." The Custodian agreed with a little nod. "Do I miss my home?" She glanced out the window for a moment. "In my own way. Binaries are made in a lab, we grow up in a training facility surrounded by doctors and scientists that are pretty sure they care but don't really know how to be more than doctors and scientists. I miss little things though, I miss the elderly woman that always took my brother and I out of the facility to run errands with her because everyone was afraid to tell her it was against the rules. I miss when she used to buy us little candies when we were young and how she used to make sure we had all our clothes on just so." She smiled a little at the memory, but it was one of those smiles that was almost as sad as it was happy. "I think she had more to do with my becoming who I am than any of those scientists or doctors ever did."

Kaede couldn't imagine growing up in a lab, or a training facility. All buildings, and no greenery. She didn't quite shudder, but her distaste at the idea was nonetheless evident. Kaede would have found such an environment stifling. She even found the amount of time they'd been spending indoors lately to be stifling, although she was trying to be brave about it for the team's sake, but she'd definitely needed her earlier foray into exploration of the backwater to restore her sense of stability. A childhood devoid of the outdoors... it would not have been something she could have done.

She chose not to remark on it, though. There were plenty of people who lived their entire lives indoors and thought nothing of it. It wasn't for her to judge. "How long have you been here?" she asked instead, "Out..." She hesitated. She didn't want to say on your own or by yourself. Not to the Custodian. It would be too hurtful, even if meant kindly. "Out... here," she decided on eventually, no better option presenting itself.

The discussion at hand did not go unheard rather Lizzy just had it as the background noise instead of her usual 8bit or EDM music. Which was probably a give away, without the consistent noise she called music going it was clear she had to be listening to something. She remained in her room though for a time as she fiddled with tech that went outside her usual understanding. Lizzy wasn't a naturally bright girl on paper, most her grades were C's outside of math. The curriculum of Grimm was a broken one digging ditches for most without the money name or brain to try and break from the mold. Lizzy was a genius but only through a measure of destruction, the scrap for her latest engineering project however wasn't available, there was also paranoia. Although it wasn't repulsor technology it's base on such had the tech addict a nervous wreck as she was taking inspiration from one of the brightest minds. It was near the end of her project that a far from subtle boom and scream of obscenities could be heard.

Stomping out a small fire on her bed the nerd could be seen exiting her room with enough fragrance of axe and febreeze to classify more like a bomb. Not a fan of the smell of burnt things she used aerosol cans of fragrant scents like it was bullets in one of her trademarked weapons. Exiting the room a mist behind her she took a seat beside the duo. Bandaging the small burn on her arm with procedural care and perhaps being a tad excessive about it, such a small wound really but the gamer didn't do much with subtle grace.

"You need to relax, look at the beauty in crazy." Lizzy remarked nudging the botanist "There's for example the uh amorphallus titan" she'd clearly googled the name on her Pipgirl. "Smells like the dead and is rare, sounds awful. But it's also as tall as a person and is kinda pretty in a weird way. There's also the similar Rafflesia Arnoldi that thing can grow to be like three feet wide and way like twenty four pounds." Lizzy remarked trying to think of some of the most out there of plants, that also had elements to be fascinated by. "Can't change the hand we got, how things played out. Just what we make of it." From there though she kept her mouth shut as it was Dia who'd been given the floor. That and Lizzy didn't have much home to talk of anyway in her opinion, she'd turned away from that life to pursue more. Rewind a few months and you'd have someone who only lived through video games practically hiding from the world.

She kept thinking about her health, her family and wondering if they would manage to shrug off this label of terrorist before...before...Marie can't think about that. Without saying another word, Marie tucks her hands in her pockets and walks away. She ponders her future, what little left she has. What's her next move? What CAN she do? As a terrorist, blamed for something she didn't even do, not a whole lot. She wanted to scream, she wanted to hit something, she felt angry, lost and afraid of what was coming.

And she couldn't do a thing to fix it.

Of course it starts raining as soon as I get here.

The sky had been overcast for a while now, and Amy did have an umbrella on her, but she couldn't take the chance of getting wet. Transformation meant getting noticed, and getting noticed meant getting caught. It wasn't that being observed was bad. Anything they threw at her at the lab, from fire to water to electricity, was easily countered by one of her forms. It was just boring. She'd gotten a good education, sure, but she'd been there for years now. It had been years since daylight touched Ms. Earheart's skin, since she'd felt natural rain. But she'd made the mistake of allowing herself to transform to travel, and now she had a feeling she was being followed.

She'd only looked behind her once. She knew better than to try to run, or to lose the man in the dark glasses and nice suit. Instead she continued walking and opened her umbrella, carefully evading puddles from another recent downpour. There was nothing she could do, however, when the thunder rolled. She should've worn her headphones. She usually did but her paranoia had worn off until about ten minutes ago. Now, as she felt herself grow three inches and gain ten pounds, as static electricity crackled off her clothes as they rubbed against her, she knew the chase was on. She dropped her umbrella and dashed down the nearest alley, no longer caring about puddles or raindrops. She sensed the man in pursuit, but didn't turn back. She knew she could outrun him, as her stamina had been tested in all her forms. If she could make it to the water she'd be sure of losing him on the river or in the gulf, but she didn't want to have to leave so soon. For now she tried to lose him on foot and see where it went.

Grover stood in a river as he noticed a strange looking young girl run towards him.

Grover thought she was a possible stalker until he noticed someone behind her chasing her. He walked out of the water and stood in front of the girl asking if she was okay.

Something--no, someone--stepped out of the river and watched her for a moment before asking if she needed help. She didn't waste the breath to tell him to get out of her way. Instead, she turned to her pursuer and summoned electricity built up in her cells and dress. The air smelled like ozone, then she unleashed her Thunder attack. The man saw it coming and realized what was happening an instant before it hit him, knocking him back and leaving his limbs twitching slightly. It would be some time before the paralysis wore off. Eviolite then turned to the...man.

"I'm okay," she told him, her dress and hands still crackling as she turned towards him and the river. Her face was somewhat serious, but not uncomfortably so.

If Marie wanted some alone time she would let her have it but she did shoot her a sympathetic gaze. After a moment she turned to the other two again to leave Marie to walk away to spend time alone or come join them, whichever she chose. "We're going to come out of this stronger and more bonded than ever." The Custodian said with a confident smile. "We'll persevere, we'll make friends out of enemies and when it matters, we'll be ready. With the fluid grace of well someone with damn near concept of grace and chose neon colors as half her fashion choice Lizzy dashed to stop Marie. Of course Marie could absolutely lift the gamer up and set her aside but that wasn't the point. It was cutting off the exit symbolically that mattered. That in this house there was no shut in moping not while Gaige watched over. "Objection! Just join us."

She sighed, "I'm not the best at this, I could never lead like Dia. But I am good at this. Wait, what I mean is I never had this, no friends I held as close as I do you guys. No family really worth calling. I didn't go anywhere cause I was scared anything could hurt me. Made worse by a family who was even more paranoid about that. I'm maybe not the best for the hero business either, like I got you all into this shit. But I am good at listening, at taking action, and not shutting up until the other party insists on opening up instead of turning away."

"What ever your malfunction is, let me try and fix it with you, let us. And if it's the label they put on us, just lay that fear to rest. Take it from the girl who spent her first eighteen years afraid. It aint worth it, and we've taken it more to heart then anyone else has. I haven't ran from fights, and yet there is no cuffs on me. We've nothing to overcome because we already dead. So lets boot up that next level already. Or visit Kaede's rich family, bet you they can provide snacks we've never touched that'd work to."

Grover instinctively walks towards it and attempts to snab a piece before his hand is batted away by a wooden spoon

Manners Grover we eat dinner then dessert, and only after our guess gets first slice now show her where to sit. Ma Augustine said in a commanding yet somehow loving tone

Grover pulls out a chair for Evioite as They receive they're dinner.

Apologies love I didn't even ask if you liked turkey or wanted to eat to begin with

Eviolite suddenly realized how hungry she was when she saw the pie. "I do enjoy turkey," she admitted as she took the seat Grover had pulled out for her. As the thunder stopped rolling and her skin began drying, Amy felt herself starting to revert to normal form, losing three inches and ten pounds in a brief glow of light. She became a little self-conscious as she looked around the room, wondering what her hosts would think.

Grover was amazed by Eviolite's transformation. This is after all the first time he's encountered another "meta" and actually witnessing there power up close.

Grover Mother seemed interested as she use to be a scientist but decided to not say a word

Pa simply gave a smirk and began to Pray over the food.

Grover was obviously shy taking simple spoon fulls of his food avoiding eye contact.

Pop being the father that he is broke the ice. "So how did you two meet?"

Had she skipped to water mode, Amy might've been a little more cautious in her answer. As she was her normal, outgoing self, she told her side of the story while she ate her turkey with relish.

Grover could feel the scorn coming from his mothers stare as it was explained he attempted to apprehend there guest.

Anyone up for some pie?! Grover stated with frightful glee as his father began to cut pieces and give everyone a plate.

Grover began to eat his pie as he swear a suited man like the one from earlier had passed the winder behind his parents in clear view of Evolite and himself.

He looked at her wondering if it was his imagination.

Amy noticed the glare from Grover's mom and clarified that she had just knocked a man unconscious with a thunderbolt, it was natural that her heroic son should respond like that. Suddenly she saw the man out the window and at the same time took a bite that was just a bit too big and burned her mouth, and assumed flame form. She swallowed hard and looked back to Grover before looking back at the window. The man was nowhere to be seen.

She followed him to the door. "They're called Willow Inc., they're a research company that was observing my powers for a while. That guy is either one of their agents, or a merc after the bounty they've placed on me."

Marie, with a flick of her pinky, could move Gaige out of the way. But she didn't want to do that to one of her friends, that wouldn't be very nice. Everyone, except Kaede, offered their voice to join them. Sure, why not? It's not like Marie has anything to do. And going outside risks the chance someone might recognize her as a Hero of Tomorrow and try and turn her in.

The best thing to do now was buckle up and show the world they aren't terrorists. And that is by doing everything a Hero would do and nothing a terrorist would do. Then once this label of terrorist is done, Marie vows that whoever stuck them with this label will get the thrashing of their life.

Marie smiles at the gamer, "Alright, you made your case." Marie walks back into the room and joins her friends.

Kaede smiled pleasantly, glad that had worked out. She supposed there really wasn't any logical reason that the team had to stay together, what with everything that had happened, she had just sort of... assumed that they would. And maybe it had been wrong of her to assume that, but then again, maybe being able to assume your friends would stay together was an okay thing to do. Regardless, it seemed to be working out for the time being. She would have been upset if anyone had left - she liked all of her teammates, and was still feeling like she was getting to know all of them better. She wanted to stay with them, and see where they ended up.

"I'm glad you're staying, Marie," was all she said about the matter. It was only a few simple words, but sometimes that was all that was needed. "And... I miss my family, but it's best not to visit them, I think. They're... they aren't like us. And I don't want to put them in a situation where they wouldn't be safe. I'll just... try to call them more often, and see where that goes. It'll be all right, I think. As far as what to do, my parents sponsor a public arboretum in Japan, and we'd be able to use that as a home location if we need one. There's a private cabin we can use. I'm not saying that we have to do that, but it is an option, and... if we need to be somewhere that isn't the United States for a while, it might be worth considering. I'd like to see everyone's names cleared as well, but in some sense... it might be easier to do that from the outside. And I don't know how all of you feel about it, but I've always had dual citizenship, I don't... I don't have to live in the US. I'd rather be with all of you. Wherever that ends up being."
