Chapter One: Diversity and Equality
Equality of legal rights is based upon the equality of man. There is a spectrum of capabilities with the most capable at one poll and the least at the other. Within the boundaries of these two polls fall the human race and although there are many individual differences we judge them close enough to qualify for equal rights and equal responsibilities.
These differences in capability have created many great inequalities in our own time which are the source of much social friction. The intellectual capabilities of the tech-genius result in the accumulation of billions in capitol and the verbal persuasiveness of the politician result in the acquisition of great influence and power. These inequalities only multiply over time as the accumulated wealth and social connections attained by one generation of great men are passed down to their heirs, who in turn accumulate yet more and pass it down to their heirs for generation after generation until a veritable aristocracy has emerged. (The author submits that he knows of what he speaks in this matter for he is the product of just such a family.)
Now magnify the differences in capacity between humans by a thousand. This is the difference between the upper one percent of mutants and humans. The smartest human is very clever indeed. The smartest mutant is a brilliant genius whose intellect is beyond comprehension. Most persuasive human can talk many into seeing the world as they do but the mutant telepath can simply will the masses into agreement. The most dangerous human, such as a special forces soldier or the like, can kill many but the most dangerous mutant can overthrow entire countries.
How then can human society have equality? I do not refer here to theoretical legal or moral equality, such as our shared rights and responsibilities under the law or our universal value as living souls but rather practical equality.
Observe the lightning speed with which mutants have progressed from a shunned minority to positions of legal and social authority. Could any human minority group accomplish the same feat? The author submits this is unlikely as the rate of advancement for a human being within a social system is limited to the volume of accomplishment that can fit within a human lifespan, which itself is limited by human capability. Human capabilities are great but finite. Human beings could dream of placing a man upon the moon and achieve it within a generation but they could not do the same with Pluto.
The author invites the reader to gaze upon the magnitude of mutant accomplishment and ask themselves where mutants will be in a generation? And then the next? Then the next?
As each generation of mutants acquires outsized capitol and influence within society based upon their superior capacity for achievement and then leave these resources to the next generation humans will rapidly become second class citizens at best and pointless drains upon the resources of their superiors at worst.
Equal status as moral agents and equal status under the law cannot endure forever under the weight of dramatically unequal status in reality. The existence of the mutant stretches the spectrum of capability beyond what the sacred principle of equality can bear. In the end only one can survive; the principle of equality or the mutant race.
