Edward was born in the age of mutant genes surfacing around the globe. He entered the the world as a premature baby, due to complications, and his mother passed away during delivery. His father was killed by a mugging incident, not days prior. This meant Edward was now orphaned, and at the moment a fragile infant clinging to life. The doctors took the child to a more suited facility, as his life required a more delicate touch then their hospital could offer. A military liaison was in the building as they rushed through the emergency entrance, child within a stasis cradle. He paused the staff, and knew this was perfect for his own research needs, claiming the child as military property.
The baby was inoculated with a new serum the military was working on since the Steve Rogers era, unfortunately they never really knew what would happen with this formula as all the original Rogers data was lost, and it's all been trial and error since. Recently, the formula interacts with each test subject differently, sometimes beneficial results, other times situations requiring incineration of subject, and destruction of research files. The leading scientist told his scouts to look out for a child with an extremely low immune system, on the brink of life and death, a baby would be the perfect candidate. Easier to ask for then to find, in western civilization but, alas Edward was found.
Edward's biology began to change, strengthening him against the world around him, in essence they'd save his life. The scientists, and doctors were pleased, but knew it would take years of developing in the child's body before the real tests would come. Until then Edward was giving the best schooling, physical training, and the best food. Adopted by the military, he'd known no other life, and was aging like any other child, except slight differences in things such as a heightened awareness of his surroundings, almost precognition. He always was able to catch himself before falling, tripping, or able to anticipate danger, as to avoid hurting himself, and as of such never did. Once a teenager Edward joined the cadets program, it was a precursor to joining he military which he always dreamed of doing.
The cadets were giving a task, to run though a training maze where they were given paint guns, and told to take out an opposing team to win the game. All the cadets were part of this military facility, orphans raised, and inoculated by the same serum. Little did the cadets know the ammo wasn't paint but live rounds, this was a real life or death exercise by the high command. To test the serums effectiveness of influencing reaction time, and capabilities of the new recruits.
Each cadet walked into the maze unaware of the circumstances, and the action began quite quickly as the very maze itself had obstacles to traverse, as well as booby traps. Edward, tried to take his time, watching the others using their own special ways to get through the maze, he had not realized any super abilities or techniques of his own device, and took on each obstacle using his own wit at his disposal. Just then he sensed something weird from behind hm as he began to climb the structure towards the next room, a turret popped up through the flooring aiming upwards to fire on anyone climbing up, he began to climb faster but to no avail as it opened fire, but before each bullet could strike him, a shell formed over his back limbs allowing him to enter the next room unharmed. The shell later absorbing back inside as was now unnecessary. "What was that? " Edward thinks to himself, this room was filled with a fog over the flooring. As he looked downward, he noticed that a cadet was laying under the foggy layer. He thought about trying to save the other cadet, but a voice came over the intercom, "This is not a rescue mission, leave all wounded as we will retrieve them, focus on task" it was his surrogate father figure the commander.
Edward, saw the pathway to traverse this room was a rock climbing type of obstacle, figuring that some of the stones would be traps, he began crawling across them, as he did the flooring dropped out, and the fog cleared as to show him, one false move could mean a plummet to his doom. As he reached out towards another stone, it ejected out of it's holding space, making him lose momentary footing, but able to catch himself by grabbing another free stone, and continue his climb. Just as he saw his entrance into the next room, the very room began to rotate, and the fog from below began to rise up to cloud his vision, and disorient him. Edward, knew the room was spinning, but doorway remain the same, the fog indeed blinding his vision, he closed his eyes. He felt the urge let out a cry ... but instead it came out like a bat chirp. At this moment the door way was visible to him, and he leapt forward, entering the next room.
This new challenge was met by a freezing cold sensation, as he regained his vision, he saw other cadets again, covered in snow, and ice frozen in place, there were no doors in sight, just a circular room like a freezer increasingly becoming colder to subdue the candidates. Edward begins to feel the exposure affects, and is confused about how to escape this room, but then realizes as staring at the flooring which is slippery to stand on, that there is water below, frozen over due to the temperature. He begins to feel faint, due to the exposure though, and a warmth inside him grows, he notices his hands are glowing red. Edward, placing his hands on the flooring, with hope observes as the ice melts free, and a hatch is exposed which he opens, and descends into.
This room is filled with the bodies of the remaining cadets, and a android waiting. Also a visible window, with military personal viewing in plain sight, along with the commander. "Welcome to the end of the maze, now one last test, defeat the sentinel" says the commander. The sentinel engages immediately, blasting a barrage of gunfire towards Edward, whom hardens all over deflecting it. In the amusement of the commander, and staff. The sentinel then uses an ocular laser canon, blasting a high intense beam towards Edward whom this time reflects the beam back at the android blowing off it's left leg. The android, realizing the missing limb begins an aerial attack, thrusting itself feet above Edward, dropping toxic gas. Edward panics but then wings rips from his back soaring him away from the gas. "Destroy the sentinel, then you can leave, " words come across the intercom again. Edward, unable to control the changes as of yet, scrambles to think of a tactic which would do just that. Noting the android, had no offensive backing his idea took form, soaring downward towards the android, which began to open fire, which Edward just shrugged off as his flesh became armor, allowing him to get close enough to cling onto the android. Now to get to it's back,.... he thought. stretching himself around the android, he felt it's was unable to maneuver an attack position from this situation. Just then, a surge of energy was felt as the android self destructed while he held on, his body becoming a heat sink, absorbing the explosion. "Finally, had me worried there for a second son. I knew you could do it" his surrogate fathers voice came across the intercom filling Edward with a strange sense of pride.
"Now that you've passed all the requirements, you are ready to join my task force of special soldiers like yourself. I call it Alpha - X, there's your suit, and it's been designed to your own unique skill set. Welcome, son.... Alpha - X looks forward to future missions with you by our side. says the commander.
