The Planet Ephemera (Open CVnU planet)

No Caption Provided

The Planet Ephemera is located in a solar system far from Earth, although the environment that developed there is similar enough that most of Earth’s life could exist here unassisted. What makes this planet notably different, however, is that many of the flora, fauna, and minerals possess some manner of unusual magical property.

Unfortunately, it was these properties that brought Ephemera to the attention of Nordok’s Abyssal Imperium. Under the command of the ruthless Zedracus, the Imperium swarmed into the planet’s capital city. The Ephemerans, possessing no magic and only medieval-level technology, were quickly overrun, and their simple yet beautiful cities were transformed into industrial monstrosities, centers for extracting, experimenting upon, and processing the planet’s unique resources.

However, the Ephemerans were unwilling to admit defeat, and quickly organized a guerrilla resistance to fight against the occupation of their home. Though outnumbered and outgunned, they are prepared to fight until the very last of them falls.

That time may be sooner than they feared, for Ephemera has recently undergone a truly cataclysmic series of events. As the Imperium prepared to withdraw from the planet in the wake of Lord Zedracus decision to turn it over to Trinity Blue, Lunaris City, the world's capital, came under a devastating assault from Contingency. In the wake of this devastation, the Destructor finally made her arrival known by crashing the abandoned hull of an abandoned Imperium space station filled with aberrant genetic horrors into the already-ravaged metropolis.

Rules:

  • All the standard RPG and CVnU rules apply, of course.
  • Your first post must explain how you arrive on the planet.
  • If you want to make Ephemeran characters/NPCs (detailed below), go crazy.
  • Feel free to use any basic Imperium forces (detailed in my blog), as part of this RP. The only units that are off-limits are the capital ships and the commanders.

Locations:

Lunaris City: this once stately Ephemeran city bore the brunt of the Imperium’s invasion. It had been rebuilt into a grotesque military and industrial hub, a gaping and infected wound upon the otherwise pristine world. Once again ravaged by assaults from beyond the planet, it is now little more than a collection of rusting ruins, through which Trinity's newly adopted "children" hunt increasingly desperate and small numbers of survivors.

No Caption Provided

The Forgotten Woods: an enormous, primeval forestland, the Forgotten Woods is quite literally a place that time forgot, as dinosaurs and other creatures grown several orders too large call it home. The trees exude a strange aura that creates a dead-magic zone, as well as emitting a powerful EM field that renders most technology inoperable. Originally, the Ephemeran Resistance made their headquarters here, but the woodlands were adversely affected by the impact of the Lost Station.

Now, the bizarre fields that affect magical and technological forces remain in place, but the creatures seem to have succumbed to some twisted form of rage, and the grounds beneath the leafy canopies has become a place of horror as these primeval monstrosities now compete with the genetic abominations in a never-ending killing season.

No Caption Provided

The Mountains of Power: a range of volcanic peaks that divides the planet along its equator, these mountains contain rich veins of arcanium, a remarkable metal that enhances magical energies. As a result, any magical effects or abilities activated in this area have a vastly enhanced power level. It is here that the Resistance has relocated, taking up residence in abandoned arcanium mines and vacant Imperium outposts. The leadership keeps moving, seldom staying in one location for more than several days at a time, in an effort to make themselves as difficult to hunt as possible.

No Caption Provided

The Sands of Chaos: this vast desert, which encompasses most of the southern continent, contains sand laced with arcanium particulates from the Mountains of Power. As a result, the magical energies of this area are random and unpredictable, and any magic used here will almost certainly behave erratically. The desert is largely uninhabited, a result of both the inhospitable climate and the massive, carnivorous worms that burrow beneath the shifting sands. The desert has remained largely unaffected by the recent catastrophes that the planet has suffered, although the rare Ephemeran who has much experience with this area and yet lives will likely be quick to point out that it would have been difficult to make the environment more hostile, in the first place.

No Caption Provided

Ephemerans (new race): Ephemerans are physically identical to humans. They cultivated a civilization that was roughly on par with Europe’s Middle Ages prior to the Imperium’s invasion. They have no magical traditions, and in fact have a genetic resistance to magic, a trait that becomes more potent with age and can also be enhanced with meditation.

Xundar, Supreme General of the Abyssal Imperium, sat upon his throne at the heart of his fortress, Volcanis, and brooded darkly. As expected, the planet had fallen easily; the Ephemerans possessed no magic and only a pitiful level of technology, and despite a surprisingly spirited defense, the forces of the Imperium had utterly crushed their military and leveled their cities. Rather than reveling in his victory, though, the cybernetic demon was gripped by a growing frustration with his inability to snuff out the ragtag Resistance. The woods in which they cowered was anathema to both sorcery and technology, and this had thus far prevented the Imperium forces from attacking the camps of the rebelling natives. Still, the damage they could do to his master's operations was superficial at best. The Imperium would strip this world of its unique resources, and soon Xundar would have a task more worthy of his abilities to focus upon.

Nyurien
Nyurien

Infest...?

No. Our... our master has told us not to. Told us that we may not infest this place. It would be... wicked.

Lunaris City was not a place that spoke to Nyurien. So few life forms -- the city sprawling and chugging out fumes that made the Infestation writhe within the azalian woman's captive form. She could feel them wiggle, feel them squirm and strain against her skin, thin barbs and protrusions forcing them out through her skin every second, roiling within her.

Despite her lack of sight, Nyurien -- or the Slayer, as her master had been referring to her -- was able to easily navigate the dark, smoggy fountain of industry. The parasites guided her. The Infestation had replaced her eyes and her ears, had all but replaced her mind. Bindings of leather and chitin kept them inside, and with what small semblance of autonomy she still retained, Nyurien forced herself forward, step by step, searching for some sort of superior....

@Joygirl: Having reviewed the information he had been provided with concerning his new arrival, Xundar took it upon himself to greet...it...in person, as such a purely biological being would no doubt find Lunaris disorienting. Spotting the hybrid creature wandering the chaotic jumble of streets, he approached and addressed it without formality or pleasantry, in a deep guttural voice that had a echo-like, metallic quality. "You must be Nyarlokat. I am Supreme General Xundar. I have been expecting you."

"Not... Nyarlokat..." Slayer rasped softly, her face still tilted at the grimy streets beneath her. Having no eyes, she had no need or desire to face the hulking beast before her. Such humanoid behavior was long behind her, since she had become infested. "Nyu... Nyuri... Slayer."

The "girl's" voice was a soft rasp, words seeming to scuttle from her lips into the air around her, creating a sort of organic acoustic -- as if thousands of voices spoke at once, in flawless harmony and pitch with one another. "Slayer. It comes for us all."

"How ominous." A hivemind. He'd been sent a hivemind as a weapon. Interesting...

"I understand that infestation is your sole purpose for existing, so I have prepared tasks for you that align with that drive. Tell me, would you prefer many small targets, or one large one, first?"

@Xundar:

"Sole purpose of... all. Infestation is coming for everyone." Nyurien settled down into a sort of awkward crouch, her head tilted slightly to the side, as if she were staring at some small thing in front of her. "Soon... soon we are all infested... soon everyone is... us." She doesn't seem to hear the question, if, in fact, she's capable of physically hearing in any fashion. However, she does seem to be comprehending her surroundings in... some way.

General Xundar was in the midst of a review of Lunaris' security details when he received the message. It arrived telepathically; the voice of his master suddenly audible in his mind. This was an exceedingly rare event, and if the message conveyed had not given sufficient indication of its importance, the manner of conveyance would have. Brushing aside all other business, Xundar hastily informed his highest-ranking officer that, until such time as the Supreme General was able to return, operations on the planet Ephemera were his responsibility. Without further explanation, the General boarded his personal ship and departed for Infernus.

@trinity-blue:

Kallak the Eviscitor idly twirled one of his many knives in his hand as he watched the proceedings with marked disinterest. The fact that he could muster no enthusiasm for the sight before him spoke to how jaded the cybernetic assassin was, for by most standards, it would be an impressive sight: legion upon legion of Imperium forces were boarding shuttles, bound for capital ships in orbit above the planet, and from there to be dispersed across other Imperium holdings throughout the universe. The sheer logistical scale of the mass exodus was staggering, as the Imperium was essentially pulling all but the minimal number of troops and other military resources required to hold only the most essential strategic positions on the planet from the ragtag native rebellion were being recalled.

Kallak shook his head as he pondered what he considered to be the ridiculousness of the entire situation. Zedracus the Inevitable, the highest-ranking military authority figure in the Abyssal Imperium beneath the Ancient One himself, had ceded the planet to Trinity Blue, rogue Destructor and avowed foe of all things related to her former master, and was now stripping the planet of virtually all military resources, leaving the god-slayer with a world that would be scarcely controllable. While he could appreciate the backhanded gesture, the fact that this was very likely to put an end to the Imperium's ready access to both Arcanium and Ephemeran commando units made the entire business a tactical wash, in his view.

Still, it wasn't the Eviscitor's place to question command decisions; he left the planning to others, and focused more on the execution. As the final legions boarded their vessels and began to lift off, headed to whatever eventual doom they would be called upon to embrace, the cyborg stretched, hoping that he wouldn't have too much longer to wait. Seeing the reallocation of troops completed was only half of his mission here; the other was to play welcome party for the world's new ruler.

Cadmus had initiated the beginning of his expedition, though it was still in the infant stages. Cadmus himself had deemed it utterly necessary that he, with only a few of his best soldiers conduct the reconnaissance of a new planet which they had yet to venture...Ephemera. However, this mission did not have the purpose of starting a conflict; Cadmus sought to draw as little attention to his reconnaissance force as possible. For that reason, they had taken his own person ship - the best overall ship in the Svart military, the Shuriken. It possessed a highly advanced, prototype cloaking shield that made the ship physically invisible and largely disrupted any of the signals being projected from the ship itself.

Although Cadmus and the Svart warriors aboard had not come to look for a fight, they had come for something, something very particular and not found on their own resource-rich planet, nor most other planets. Arcanium. Cadmus wanted it for its unique ability to strengthen the powers of magical users, which would enable himself to become stronger as well as his Inquisitors.

Other than that, he also hopped it might provide answers for re-activating the magical abilities of those Svart who currently did not possess any; those who had their magical powers bred out by sheer force of not using them over centuries of exile. That was the bigger goal; to strengthen the Svart populace as a whole.

"Okay" Alexis nodded to a individual in a lab coat as she sat on a chair, Lets see how far I can push myself, I'm reeeally hoping I don't end up porting in some where bad. Alexis worried with mild anxiety as she volunteered for an experiment for one of the many brilliant minds on Earth whom was yet still a bit of a loon.

"Alright, so I got this picture of a planet I believe a hostile alien civilization is taking over. I believe that they're the Time Siphon's or one of the other previous alien empires that have layed siege to Earth in the past. I can't reach there with my current resources but I believe your powers have the strength and reach to get there and bring any tangible evidence to prove my theory"

"Yep" Alexis replied back blandly as she wanted to get this over with as soon as possible "if I do find anything I'm going to report this to my superiors per our deal alright" Alexis stated as she focused on an image captured from an advanced satellite, it was a sol system countless AU's away from Earth "Alright I never ported this far before so lets do this...three...two...one"

Suddenly she disappeared silently from the researchers lab in a instant only to appear on another side of deep space, Alexis's eyes were wide in surprise as she held in her breath and felt the extreme temperatures of space I can't last long here, I have to find the planet she soon saw what she believed to be Ephemera that appeared from her distance to be a tiny speck. Another instant transmission later and she would soon find her self entering the atmosphere at terminal velocity but due to her vision being blocked from the friction of entry wouldn't be able to teleport thus she would fall like a comet towards the industrialized portion of the planet.

@contingency: @cadmus_knightfall: @trinity-blue:

The withdrawal was nearing completion. Most of the orbital vessels had already departed, loaded with troops, equipment, and as much precious Arcanium as their cargo holds could carry. All that remained on the planet, aside from his escort, which consisted of two regiments of Grizzlon light infantry and his personal bodyguard of a half-dozen Adamantine Legionaries, the only Imperium presence that remained on Ephermera were enough defenders to keep the local rebels from taking the most critical junctures. These too would be pulling out after he did.

Provided they lasted that long, of course. The Eviscitor was becoming antsy. He probably knew Malicia-erm, "Trinity" better than anyone else in the Imperium, aside from the Ancient One himself, and one of her many endearing qualities was her tendency to show up when she was good and ready, and not a nanosecond before. Well, if she turned up only to find her new world firmly in the hands of the natives, that would be her mess to sort out, not his.

The Ephemerans, however, weren't his only, or even his primary concern. The Imperium was making no secret of its abandonment of the planet, which would mean that other parties were no doubt aware that the world, and its rich Arcanium deposits, were now vulnerable. Orbital satellites were on full alert, but this would do little more than give the Eviscitor enough time to get his own hindquarters clear.

"Sir." One of the Legionaries stepped up behind him, its flat, metallic voice drawing his attention. "We are tracking an object entering the planet's atmosphere over the industrial sector."

Well, at least something was happening. "Show me." A quick glance at the data soon had the Imperium's top assassin puzzled. It was of the right size to be Trinity, but it wasn't behaving as someone flying toward the planet under their own power; it more resembled something in free-fall. "Get a recon squad to the projected impact point. And tell 'em if they find something alive that they're not to kill it before letting me know what it is." Within moments, a group of Grizzlon trackers was en route to Alexis' likely landing zone.

@chaos_dragon:Alexis crashed like a missile into one of the various fuel facilities for the Imperium which caused a nasty explosion that annihilated everything with in a one kilometer radius but fortunately it seemed that the area wasn't in use at the time, Alexis would climb out a crater filled with molten liquids unscathed to take a deep breath.

Huh, looks like Earth Alexis let out a few coughs as toxic fumes that would have instantly killed most humans simply tickled her insides and itched her throat, the pink haired figure then examined her surroundings quietly as she focused on using her advanced hearing capabilities "Let's hear who's coming" Grizzlon's while far older and experienced in comparison to the human girl were simply beyond their league due to the enormous power discrepancy. It wasn't that the Imperium's elite forces made any mistakes since they did operate with professionalism and guile one would expect from their re-known but alas they still had biological needs such as the blood circulation in their bodies and inhalation of air from the environment which unfortunately was more than enough for Alexis to pick them out.

The Grizzlon's managed to mask their figures quite well to the point Alexis would have never noticed they were there were it not for the girls efforts in supporting focus on the sounds they ever so faintly emitted, it may have been like picking out a pin-drop in the middle of a sandstorm due to the explosions and crackling of burnt metal but she did so and quite flawlessly too one might add.

No Caption Provided

Alexis finally broke her focus as some acidic rain fell down her petite form and gazed towards the direction of the hidden Grizzlon's with a small but confident smile, "Hello there"she whispered with casualness as one would greet their neighbor before manifesting a massive transparent forcefield in a one kilometer radius that near instantaneously constricted its radius into a ball that would fit on the palm of Alexis's hand. Essentially what Alexis attempted to do was crush and compact everything in the Grizzlon's general area down into a tiny ball of condensed matter so the odds of any Grizzlon's surviving to report anything more of what they seen would be stopped, for the girl this was a simpler solution then attempting to find each one in the vast industrialized area and risking missing one.

@chaos_dragon:

Cadmus carefully brought the Shuriken in for a soft, controlled and perfect landing. A light film of dust was kicked up from the glowing thrusters before their power dimmed and ultimately shut down. Unbuckling his harness, Cadmus removed himself from the captains chair, leaving the the cockpit to head directly underneath to the ready room.

He met the few men whom he had brought with him there; all of them were Svart Inquisitors. Those of the normal army units were unsuited to such a mission, even the Crimson Marines. Soldier's weren't particularly good at blending in, and this wasn't a fighting mission. The Inquisitors along with Cadmus had abandoned their onyx armour in the storage hold of the Shuriken - armour would only attract more attention and it might give off a perception they sought to avoid. Instead, the Svart were clad in traditional obsidian robes with a large hood; thin silver patterns decorated the edges of the fabric.

The Ebony Alf threw his hood over his head; the shadow cast by the hood covered his ornate tattoo's exceptionally well. He pressed a switch located on an electronic panel in-laid in the ships bulkhead nearest him. The airlock hissed as the main door opened from the centre; the top rose and retracted in to position above as the lower half folded out to form a ramp. "Nobody strays from the group. We may be more noticeable grouped up, but it'll allow us to all get out of here faster." Cadmus motioned to his hip, and pointed at the metal hilts which were buckled to all the belts of the Inquisitors. "Avoid conflict at all costs. If one of you compromises this, this planet will be your grave."

No Caption Provided

All the Inquisitor knew the drill; realistically, they were all as cold and menacing as Cadmus was - maybe even more so. At least Cadmus was capable of presenting emotion, which most of the time was negative. The Inquisitors however, they were like stone, like a silent place in a thick forest in the darkness of night. The Halfling and his followers strode off the ships ramp which automatically ship behind them as the last man's boots touched the surface of the planet.

@cadmus_knightfall: @contingency: @trinity-blue:

Kallak's fingers drummed impatiently upon one of his gauntlets, the only motion made by the cybernetic Ephemeran as he listened to the transmission from his recon team. The sudden plume of fire and smoke that suddenly rose on the horizon indicated to him that, whatever the "object" may have been, it had obviously made planetfall. Heh, well...there's one less fuel depot for the rebels to capture...

"We are on location," snarled the deep, guttural voice of the Grizzlon squad's communication officer. "Looks like there's something in-" and the transmission abruptly cut out to a static whine that caused the Eviscitor to yank the receiver from his ear. Maybe the Destructor had arrived, after all.

"Sir." The Legionary directly behind him stepped up and addressed him again. "Orbital satellites are reporting an atmospheric displacement, congruent with one shuttle-class entry. No further corroboration reported."

Things were definitely heating up. That was one confirmed surface impact of something that could take out a squad of one of the most savage species in the known universe, and unless asteroids had somehow gained the ability to cloak themselves from all detection, it was looking like whatever had annihilated his squad wasn't the only visitor he could expect. Kallak was no coward; he had faced a goddess twice, been killed once, and was still standing, so it took a considerable amount to even give him pause, but he wasn't about to start a fight with an unknown enemy, when he had insufficient forces, over a planet that was, frankly, no longer his concern. "Prep the shuttles," he replied to the Legionary. "Pull remaining forces back to evac points. If we're attacked, we stage a fighting retreat, but this planet is no longer ours to hold."

@chaos_dragon: After several minutes of silence Alexis figured that they wouldn't be sending any more scouts to look for her and so she decided to look for them, cloaking herself in a exotic field that not only masked her physical form from the naked eye but also the sounds she produced would essentially mean the only sign of her presence would be the smell from her body and physical trail left behind.

Over the course of several minutes she would travel far and wide in search of camps and outposts only to eliminate them immediately in the same method she did to the original Grizzlon scouts, by the time she reached the last target she inflicted Imperium causalities up to a hundred in addition to several barracks or outposts being replaced with dozens of one kilometer craters. "Where is your commander?" Alexis asked softly as she held the last Grizzlon she could find, her body was still 'cloaked' but the Grizzlon's squadmates whom not too soon ago exploded into a pile of giblets when she onslaughted them in a lightning fast strike had coated her in a paint of red so while her details such as facial features were masked but the body shape was not so anyone looking would see a petite form of red.
