WE USE OUR KNOWLEDGE AND TECHNOLOGY FOR SAFETY

A military does not simply exist to destroy things. UNKD is similar. It offers jobs, income & security to a lot of people in more ways than one. There are hundreds of employees spread over the entire globe, ensuring the safety of its citizens from a common threat known as Kaiju.

It is not a conventional military, nor will it involve in the affairs of governments or its politics. It is a branch organization of UN, and works as an independent body hard-turned on one specific task and just that. However that hardly means it is limited to just that.

Below are listings of various undertakings by the division of the UNKD, not limited to a single base, but the entire military as a whole.

Missions & Operations

Effective and Flexible Armed Forces

Armed forces must be able to operate effectively and flexibly, while ensuring that costs are kept under control.

This requires an effective and efficient acquisition process, new operational concepts and optimum readiness. Cyber warfare is a new dimension in military operations, whereas coalition operations involve cooperation and operating as part of a network or chain. The division provides support in the form of innovative analysis and evaluation methods, sophisticated CD&E (Concept Development & Experimentation) and exercise support.

  • Integration of live, virtual and constructive simulations:
Simulation systems are commonly classified into three categories: Live, Virtual and Constructive. In 'Live' simulations, human operators use real hardware to train for certain tasks. Examples of Live simulations are field exercises in instrumented ranges. The 'Virtual' simulations are characterised by human operators that use simulated systems, for example a pilot in a flight simulator. In 'Constructive' simulations, we find simulated players (artificial intelligence) that control simulated equipment.

An example is a war game type of simulation that represents units at brigade level. The objective of the LVC research program is to investigate where the benefits are in linking Live, Virtual and Constructive simulations and how this integration should be implemented. The goal is to develop techniques, methods, guidelines and standards which allow the Netherlands Armed Forces and its Allies to achieve LVC integration in a flexible and efficient way.
  • Concept Development and Experimentation:
The basis of CD&E is stimulating creativity and innovation by experiencing new ideas and concepts. Thinking and doing are combined in an interactive process with experts and the customer. This creates a change in mindset, as well as insight. By using results from brainstorm sessions, evaluations and experiments, a widely supported concept is developed which describes a solution for the problem at hand.

By capturing the insights in a concept document, a robust framework for the final solution is created. Due to this procedure, the quality of the final solution is often much higher. Furthermore, the requirement of acquisitions for new functionalities often disappears and changes in organisations can be more effective. The concept document is very important during the implementation of the final solution.

tl;dr: Training is given to soldiers involved after each Kaiju incident to minimize casualties of both civilian and those of UNKD soldiers.

Force Protection

Protection of Military Personnel and Materials

The S.T.R.I.K.E comprehensive protection model links physical protection, mission goals and costs. In addition to providing physical protection, the model is designed, for example, to prevent damage by identifying threats in advance and, if necessary, intercepting them. The Division can also assist in the cost-effective and safe acquisition, maintenance and use of weapons systems and munitions.

  • World Class Ballistic Research:
The division directly handles the acquisition of its engineers Gaige and Hanabi to provide the very best in Ballistics to prove effective against the Kaiju who have super tough exteriors and are super hard to bring down. UNKD has also been working on Armors that provide its soldiers with adequate means of fighting against bigger Kaiju - the KSM-1 being one of its first kind.
  • Protection and Survive-ability of Infrastructure:

UNKD supports local defense ministries in setting up technical and functional requirements for protective base structures. With the state-of-the-art knowledge on (a)symmetric threats and the way the resulting physical effects interact with constructions we support industries in developing these kind of protective structures. We are able to advise on adequate countermeasures to enhance the protection and survivability of critical infrastructure and their related occupants.

UNKD is actively involved in consortia working in [example] and [example] project that focus on improvement of the protection and survivability of critical infrastructure against all kind of hazards including impact and explosion scenarios and Kaiju attacks. Examples of projects include ELASSTIC, SPIRIT and HYPERION.

We combine our test & evaluation capabilities with know-how on numerical simulations and theoretical expertise to obtain full understanding of the consequences of threats for structures and related occupants. With in-house developed software we are able to compare the consequences of threat scenarios and to advise authorities and industries on how to improve the safety and security of critical infrastructure.

We invent innovative protective solutions like the anti-RPG net and light weight transparent armour that can be integrated in protective structures. UNKD's blast test team has multi-channel measurement equipment available to quantify and analyze blast and fragment loading and structural response.

  • Materials for Protection Concepts:
The challenge is to further reduce the weight of protective materials, components and resulting products, reduce (production) costs and increase their protective performance. At TNO we achieve this with state-of-the-art R&D on protective materials and protection concepts. We have qualitative and quantitative knowledge on the high-dynamic behaviour of materials under impact (e.g. blast, fragments, projectiles). With in-house built theoretical knowledge, engineering models, numerical simulations and unique experimental facilities with high-tech diagnostics we can support industries

National Security

Improving Equipments and Actions during Disasters

UNKD wants to improve equipment and the competencies of personnel and restructure implementation capacity in a revolutionary way, with the goal of more effective, efficient and safe action by the operational security services in the event of incidents, disasters and large-scale crises.

This includes costeffective, multidisciplinary action using optimal means of protection and adequate information management. This should produce better, coordinated decision-making at all levels, greater self-sufficiency among citizens following incidents or disasters, and improved information and availability of knowledge to mobilise government, companies and citizens.

UNKD, although not affiliates of local governments, will still preserve the stability and social order in times of crisis.
