  • Action Survivor: In the tradition of Indiana Jones.
  • Adventurer Archaeologist: He is more of a treasure hunter, but other than that he fit's the trope in all aspects.
  • Anti-Hero: Does not have a problem with breaking the law, however he will risk his own life to save someone.
  • Badass
    • Badass Bookworm: Just like the Indiana Jones routine, except that he's not a professor or a student. However, he's pretty cultured (and multilingual) and knows a lot about ancient history.
    • Badass Normal: Frequently fights off ancient supernatural monstosities.
  • Born Lucky: Pretty self-explainatory.
  • The Charmer
  • Chick Magnet: As per the above trope. A page in his notebook is full of girls' phone-numbers.
  • Cosmic Plaything: The universe either really likes Vin or really, really hates him. Or maybe both. It sure does like lobbing him into incredible danger with no preparation at all. And smashing him into things. And whenever he winds up getting in a dangerous situation, somehow it always, always, always winds up getting worse.
  • Cunning Linguist: He can read outdated Latin dialects along with a number of other ancient languages, and speaks English, Spanish, Indonesian, and at least a little Tibetan. Possibly more.
  • Dark Secret
  • Determinator
  • Doom Magnet: In his own words, "Everything I touch turns to shit." It's not always played for laughs, either.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He backstabs people, flagrantly breaks the law and has a streak of scary ruthlessness and vindictiveness that comes out when he's at his worst; but for the most part he seems to have more of a jerkass façade, and not a very good one.
  • Loveable Rogue
  • Made of Iron: Stack up all his injuries and he should be heavily crippled by now.
  • One-Man Army: Surprisingly. He is an on and off Freedom fighter. Capable of overthrowing warlords by himself.
  • Parental Abandonment: His mother committed suicide while he was still an infant, and his father gave him up to a state institution when Vin was 5. Which leads to...
    • Orphan's Ordeal: As a young teenager, he was living on the streets.
  • Tall, Dark and Handsome
  • Tall, Dark and Snarky
  • Tempting Fate: Daring is his...fourth name.
  • Unluckily Lucky: For all the trouble he constantly gets himself into, he still manages to walk out unscratched out of most of them. For example: Dodging every single bullet in a ridiculously uneven firefight.
  • Walking Disaster Area: He doesn't mean it. In fact, given his occupation, he'd be happier if it didn't happen - treasure buried under a thousand tons of rubble doesn't have a whole lot of market value. Still; everywhere Vin goes, chaos, gunfire, explosions and destruction probably aren't far behind.

@_vex_:

Tropes are devices and conventions that a writer can reasonably rely on as being present in the audience members' minds and expectations. On the whole, tropes are not clichés. The word clichéd means "stereotyped and trite." In other words, dull and uninteresting. We are not looking for dull and uninteresting entries. We are here to recognize tropes and play with them, not to make fun of them.

Big Bad: To The Replicator's Dragon.

The Chessmaster

Churchgoing Villain: Those few whom are close to him know that he is a man of faith, but he keeps this well-hidden.

Cool Old Guy

Dangerously Genre Savvy

Deadpan Snarker: He has a very sardonic sense of humor. Every other line is a sharp quip at the expense of someone or a dark commentary on how wrong things have been going.

The Evil Genius: A powerful crimeboss with a head for numbers.

Evil Old Folks: Leland is in his elder years, but it hasn't impeded his greed or his ruthlessness.

Finger Tenting: Does this on occasion.

Flight: Does this thanks to a genetics-altering serum stolen from the CIA.

Only in It for the Money

Pragmatic Villainy

Psychotic Smirk: Has one of these every once in a while.

Sharp-Dressed Man

Smug Snake: Fits this like a glove.

Visionary Villain: Owlsley is a man with a plan. He has been paying The Replicator and The Middleman to secure a zombie virus from a mine outside of San Valentin. Once he has the virus, he'll trademark and copyright the genetic code of the virus, so he can sell zombie soldiers to warring nations, and anyone else with the money to buy.

Wicked Cultured: He's fond of the finer things in life.

You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: He's quite fond of this method of business.

  • Meaningful Name: Mark Antony Knightfall. Named after the Roman general who avenged Cesar (see what I did there). Derived from the Roman God of War Mars.
  • Pragmatic Hero: Putting the lives of toddlers and his family for the greater good! Also killing Raysh is a good example, while everyone wouldn't kill him because of the man he once was. Mark saw that he was a monster that had to be put down even though he practically raised him.
  • Jerk with a heart of gold: Though most of the time brass and insulting he means well.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: If you've interacted gone against Nox whether hero, villain, or neutral. He will go out of his way to call you out on your shit.
  • Shut up, Hannibal: When he can't win an argument.
  • The Batman Gambit: Most recently against Orpheus. Nox didn't invite him to the funeral, but he showed up and did exactly what he expected him to do.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Playing the Knightfalls and the Liafadors into fighting each other in order to get a reason to kill Raysh, Faking his friends death without his permission, etc.
  • Xanatos Gambit: I always win, even when I lose I win.
  • Badass in a Nice suit: You can't argue with that.
  • He who fights monsters: Mark is sometimes close to crossing the line over to monster.
  • I did what I had to do: No apologies.
  • Black Sheep: For the Liafadors.
  • Child Soldier: I don't have to explain that.
  • Coming of Age: Point of the story.
  • I just want to be noticed: Mark reeks the need for acceptance, his intention by brining Raysh's soul to the Liafadors was so he would be accepted.
  • Knight Templar Little Brother: Over Ashley and the Knightfalls
  • Not good with people: He doesn't have many friends because of his strong personality and often overly patronizing/sarcastic attitude.

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: His silver talons are easily capable of deflecting bullets, and cutting through most materials.
  • Awesome McCoolName: Perseus Knightfall.
  • Affably Evil: Hes actually quite friendly. Wouldn't stop him from going on a slaughter spree to further his philosophy.
  • Back from the Dead: On of Percy's abilities is to resurrect himself from death.
  • Boss: Superhuman, magic, is a Knightfall, martial arts mastery. What more can be said?
  • Boss Baritone: He has a rather deep voice.
  • Byronic Hero: Wishes deeply to safeguard the world by eliminating chaotic imbalances. His definition of chaotic imbalances... can be somewhat broad. To the point where he almost seems like a borderline villain.

Maverick (Updated)

"Hit hard. Fight Fast. Strike Strategically. Play Pragmatically." -ENCU motto

Absurdly Sharp Blade: Most of Maverick's blades are this actually, being of often top par quality. Bradshaw, Nemaz and most shadow company possess blades that can cut through most materials and metahumans.

  • Jackal's blade has a width measurable in molecules, and cuts through even diamond. Though, the way it achieves this is more due to the blade's energy usage and chainsaw-like vibration motion.

Awesome Mccool name: Eric Bradshaw. Moya Hawkins. Jack Prometheus.

A.I is a crapshoot: Averted. Prometheus seems to be in actuality the most benevolent of the named characters and seems to place the most value on sentient life out of all of the others.

Badass Normal: Any non-powered member of Maverick is this. With many soldiers replaced by M.O.R.S, most humans who are there are exceptional in capability.

  • Bradshaw is so far the most well known. He has no superpowers to speak of aside from his ability to analyze generally most things and keen sense of intuition. His prosthetic skeleton is not that high of a buff, being composed of normal materials and mostly is attributed armor. While his armor increases his durability to superhuman levels, he still is a vulnerable human with weaknesses a human has.
  • Moya. She has no enhancements or abnormal skills. Though she does sometimes dawn an exosuit, she has fought one of the Warsman's serveants, who could shunt himself into "the void", an abscence of molecules that destroys most things, and was capable of killing humans in a single strike and removing the limbs of most targets.
  • The Extra-Normal Combat Unit (ENCU for short) is an entire squad of all human special forces trained by Bradshaw and Nemaz. Most people who join have to have an indomitable, unshakable will to make it, and the dropout rate is high. Indoctrination includes Bradshaw blatantly showing squads superhumans such as Prometheus, who are able to lop cars and move at blurring speeds, and taunting them in that they are indeed their competition.

Badass Creed: Each of Maverick's divisions have one.

  • "One mind, any weapon. Act like a man of thought. Think like a man of action. Power perceived may be power achieved. Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is true power. Become that which your enemy fears the most. These are the doctrines of a great Warriors, Kings...and Heroes" -Stephen C Hogan
  • Maverick Shadow Company: "Night time, is the right time." U.S Navy Special Warfare patch.
  • Extra-Normal Combat Unit: "Hit hard. Fight Fast. Strike Strategically. Play Pragmatically." -Bradshaw to the ENCU
  • M.O.R.S: "They kill and they die. They die and they kill. Wherever they walk, death often follows." -Description of the M.O.R.S.

BFG: Many weapons like Maverick's MHV Helical cannon and conventional weapons such as M-134 mini-guns and Browning .50 cals.

Blood Knight: Nemaz and Jackal.

Bully the Dragon: Orpheus attempted to do this to Bradshaw. However, he was having none of it.

Cape-Killer: Maverick is generally percieved as this. When in actuality it is Bradshaw and the ENCU who specialize in this.

Charles Atlas Superpower: Bradshaw to the max, as he is capable of accomplishing mental task "no human should be able to do" with seemingly supernatural efficiency and effectiveness, to the point where it is simply referred to as "Battlefield precognition." And his physicals are hardly far behind. He has been able to dodge sword slashes at mach 10 from the lioness despite not at all being able to observe it or see it. Not to mention the absurd amount of combat feats he has that makes him out of armor, as well as seemingly convincingly fighting 25 metahuman Navy SEALS with relatively minor damage to himself.

  • ENCU who are trained to develop similar skills to Bradshaw, and often join in fights with metahumans. To the point that their training consists of going hand to hand with super soldiers that can tear off a human beings arms, and Jackal and Prometheus, who can both throw cars by front kicking them.

Child Soldier: Little known.

  • Technically, Prometheus. Being an AI, "he" is only 6 years old and has a mind comparable to a 16 year old.
  • Pax was breed to be a soldier from birth, and eventually went rogue.
  • Jackal and Nemaz are a secret project of this being done by Maverick in Africa.

Conservation of Ninjitsu: Zigzagged. Generally, fighting a large number of Maverick's forces is a much larger threat than simply fighting one. Metahuman targets often find themselves overwhelmed and indeed, working as a team is one of the main reasons as to why Maverick is so effective.

  • However, losing forces has differing effects depending on the situation. Sometimes, it will actually make them fight harder and stronger. But this can also demoralize them, and make them weaker.

Curb-Stomp Battle: Maverick appearing in the middle east to oppose one iteration of Exemplar. They could clear out entire cells of terrorists as effectively as superheroes could and often could capture them all non-lethally, with casualties to their own members being in the single digits, and them losing not one soul.

  • Arguably Revenge for the Fallen. Throughout the entire event, Maverick had managed to easily slaughtering numerous of mutants. Though they had been able to make it into DC, their numbers were severely thinned to the point of only a handful made it to Washington DC.
  • Usually what happens in the case of a lone vigilante attempting to fight Maverick. They have the resources and firepower to take on all but the most potent/skilled "Street levelers" with utter ease. They often argue they could very easily take over Gothic and practically wipe out crime through imposing martial law, but the area lacks order and the government support to afford to have them there.
  • Pax during his fight with Abigail and Nastaya, beat Nastaya into submission with a lamp post and forced Abigail to intervene. Otherwise, Pax would have potentially killed Nastaya should he have continued.

Dangerously Genre Savvy: Many people in Maverick can detect ominous ques and avert many of the mistakes the military often mistakes, such as using things like tanks against clearly large and bulletproof enemies, shooting people who are obviously invulnerable with the intent to kill them and reacting to things such as glowing eyes.

Deadpan-Snarker: All mentioned members of Maverick are this to some degree, in their own way. Particularly Prometheus and Apex.

The Dragon: Eric Bradshaw. Due to his insane amount of skill, tactical abilities, battle precognition and weapons that can give some "gods" pause. He has fought numerous metahumans and entities, including Satar, Earth M Ziccarra Liafador and M-174.

  • Jackal. He's probably the most difficult person to fight in Maverick due to his immense strength, speed and his absurdly sharp sword that can emit high frequency hydrostatic shockwaves to bypass indestructible armor and harm opponents within it/strike internal organs.

Had to be Sharp: Bradshaw and even superhumans of Maverick must be this, particularly to stand against metahuman foes seemingly "Far out of their league."

Healing Factor: Relatively prominent.

  • Nemaz and the shadow company have a significant variation. They can casually regenerate limbs over the course of hours.
  • Pax, when he was apart of Maverick.
  • M.O.R.S have the most powerful variation. They can regenerate from headshots, reattach limbs on the spot, come back from being decapitated, regrow limbs if needed, shrug off headshots, recover from bloodbending/total organ destruction, put themselves back together if cut/ripped and half and replace burned cells.

Killsat: Maverick's Orbital weapons platforms. The HELIOS, Wrath and Hellbore. (Soon to be more)

Last name basis: Common in Maverick.

Immune to Bullets: Many of the people Maverick fight are this.

  • Until the encounter a bullet that is simply large enough. Such as Satar when he attacked Maverick Encorporated, receiving a critical wound after being hit with a weapon.
  • Many people in Maverick are this to many kinds of rounds. Though explosives and higher caliber ammunition can do this.
  • Bradshaw's armor casually shrugs off adamantium, vibranium and typical Nth metal/indestructible bullets.

Made of Iron: Bradshaw in and out of his armor. Most human members of Maverick.

Manipulative Bastard: Bold is this at times.

Meaningful Name:

  • Nemaz. Means "Nothing" in Latvian and "Near" in Hindi.
  • Jackal. He call himself this because of his past, and the correlation between Jackal and death in egyptian mythology.
  • Prometheus. Greek mythology, meant to be a benevolent champion of humanity.
  • M.O.R.S. The acronym also spells out the name of the Roman personification of Death.

More Dakka: Maverick shows the Orks what Dakka is.

  • The Nebraska empire claim. Maverick was rather casually chucking mini-nukes down range and firing orbital blasts towards alien starships.

No sense of Humor: People think Bradshaw is this.

  • Most people who meet Prometheus think he is this, when it is very much the opposite.

Orbital Drop: Maverick does this frequently to deploy anywhere in the world in 15-90 minutes.

Power Creep, Power Seep: Seen frequently.

Speed Blitz: A tactic used by Maverick's faster Vehicles.

  • Nemaz did this to Gale Xanders during their fight, using his speed to slow her down with numerous strikes, before throwing a missile at her.

Super Strength: Very prominent among Maverick in actuality.

  • Nemaz and most Shadow Company. They can tear apart a person's limbs, deform steel, dent concrete and fight with larger animals such as Gorillas and 1300 lb grizzly bears.
  • Prometheus can punt cars, flip train cars, brawl with metahumans, punt cars around and jump several stories.
  • Jackal can topple some giant monsters, also fight with metahumans, tear apart some metahumans. dent a tank with his strikes, move objects that weigh 500 tons with only moderate effort.

Super Speed: Jackal and Prometheus.

Teleporters and Transporters: Maverick lacks the technology to accomplish this. Instead, they use Apex.

Would Hurt a Child: Some people in Maverick are forced to.

  • Pax, when he was apart of Maverick, nearly outright stomped a child, and was stopped by Arquitenens and Nastaya.
  • Bradshaw does this frequently. Again, he does this in Revenge of the fallen, by knocking a mutant teenage girl with a healing factor. He then cuts her stomach open, plants a bomb inside of her, helps it heal and then lets her retreat. As she does, Bradshaw detonates the bomb within her, killing her and a small squad of mutants in the process.
  • And he is the only one to do this on screen. Doing this during Paradise lost when he is forced to kill a little girl infected by the Warsman's virus.
  • Jackal would do this.
  • Averted with Prometheus. He has outright refused to do this offscreen, leading Bradshaw to have to do it.

(And a lot more.)
