No one really knows what goes on inside the brain of a coma patient. One man claims to have been in a coma for over a decade but was aware of everything going on around him. Another man claimed to have lived another life, got married and had children before he woke up to a harsh reality where his family never existed.
For Ethan Durant, the only thing that exists for him is the world of dreams. Shattered memories of a happier time play at his mind like a cruel mistress of the night. He remembers the accident that took his family but he refuses to let them go.
It is rather lonely in comas. Darkness seeps in, surrounding Ethan from every side like a thick blanket when the dreams aren't there. With the darkness comes fear because people tend to be afraid of what lays beyond. But then something happens. Ethan speaks a magic word and with it, he's changed. He's no longer afraid, not when he's this powerful. Strong enough to shatter a mountain and shrug off bullets as if they were annoying bees.
But this time things are different. It is not Ethan who changes this time around, but his sister Emma. Like a mighty amazon from ancient myth, she places her hands on her hips and turns her head from side to side, looking at her reflection in the mirror, "I know. I'm breathtaking."
Emma has always adored her appearance, taking a bit too much pride in how beautiful she thinks herself to be. Sometimes such things aren't just a matter of selfish pride but simple facts. Or so she thinks if one were to ask her.
Emma likes her new outfit, it suits her. The lighting motif on her chest is a nice touch and red has always been her favorite color, along with gold. And after admiring herself in the mirror, she takes off through the window in a burst of electric light and the characteristic KRA-KOOM sound that follows.
Soaring high above Century City, Emma giggles as she takes the time to enjoy this feeling. Flying with nothing but air beneath her and whipping through her lovely cinnamon brown hair is like nothing else in the world. No words can properly describe it.
That night, Emma is a whirlwind of activity as she trains more on how to use her powers before fighting crime. It's not the first time she's appeared and the media is starting to love her. She loves them to in her own way. And why shouldn't she? She protects them with her brother, the mighty Captain Nova. Odd that he's never around when she is.
Prologue: Is It Horn Or Is It Ivory?
Two years ago...
The camping trip had been stretched out as long as possible but it had to eventually come to an end. So after packing their things, Ethan and his siblings piled into the car for the long six-hour drive home. As the day wore on, night eventually fell like a blanket as the black SUV crept it’s way ever forward on the dark pavement with it’s lights cutting through the darkness.
The conversation on the way home had once filled the vehicle like a sweet aroma of happiness and joy. But the night had fallen and the hours were long. Ethan soon found himself the only one awake as Emma and Tommy had fallen asleep, leaving him alone to his thoughts. Then rather unexpectedly, time stopped as he was taken into a mysterious place. It looked like a cave as he had glanced around before noticing a voice that called out to him in the darkness. A light lit the way and he made his way into a vast chamber that held six mysterious stones made of a material unknown to him but marked with runes all over them. The magic inside the stones made it known to Ethan he had been chosen as the Avatar of Power, that he would be a new champion in a world encased in an ever-encroaching darkness. To beat back the decay and the hero the people needed. A test was given, a trial passed and Ethan proved he was worthy of the power that was then bestowed to him.
After this, Ethan was sent back into his SUV with time now allowed to continue it's relentless march forward, Ethan went through a life-changing car accident. Unfortunately, there was no way to avoid it. The bestowal of power was not responsible, neither could the stones of magic power predict the future or what had happened. The accident had been tragic and unfortunate.
Unknown to all save a few, Hypnos, the God of sleep, was late. The fates had told the King of the Gods a shift in power was coming and Zeus had sent Hypnos to Ethan as a favor owed to him for a past wrong done to him. A time and location were learned but unfortunately, the power had already been bestowed upon Ethan so then Hypnos had to play catch up as he tried and failed to put the mortal to sleep but to no avail.
Now that the opportunity had passed to put Ethan to sleep before the power was transferred to him, Hynpos began to look for an alternative plan. Fortune seemed to smile down upon the God as he spotted an 18 wheeler semi-truck down the road that just happened to be traveling towards Ethan’s vehicle. Firing an arrow, Hypnos shot the truck driver so that he fell asleep at the wheel.
Ethan tried his best to avoid a collision, but his attempted maneuver failed as his car skidded to the side, burning rubber as the semi T-boned the passenger side of the SUV. The car was sent spinning as it’s momentum carried it over the edge and down a cliff where it tumbled end over end before coming to a final rest by a tree. The truck driver was snapped awake by the crash and stopped his vehicle and more rubber was burned.
The police and ambulance were called and it was determined that Emma Durant had died on impact. Tommy Durant would die on his way to the hospital while Ethan Durant sustained critical injuries and was rushed to the hospital where the doctors worked to save his life. He has been in a coma ever since, unable to wake up except through the use of an avatar of Captain Nova. To date, no one has been able to determine why Ethan cannot wake up from his coma and no doctor has been able to get him out of his deep sleep. That is because to the world of mortals, there were unseen forces at work.
The very Gods have conspired against Ethan Durant. Hypnos, the God of sleep, had put the young man into a coma through the use of that truck driver and now he kept him in a comatose state. Morpheus, the God of dreams, kept Ethan in his realm and both Gods have been working together all this time for a purpose unknown to all save them.
When Ethan tried to will himself to wake up, he failed but did manage to create a magic avatar of his alter ego Captain Nova so he could interact with the waking world. This had been much to the surprise of both Hypnos and Morpheus. After consulting with the King of the gods, they decided that Morpheus would give Ethan everything he ever wanted in the form of dreams so real they would be indistinguishable from reality, making it hard for Ethan to want to leave such a paradise.
As Ethan spent less and less time as Captain Nova and more time in the dream world, it began to look as if the gods had won a game that no one but them had any knowledge of playing. It looked for all the world that checkmate had been declared but there would be a new player that was about to enter the area. One that would begin to tip the balance in Ethan’s favor and this gaming piece had a name:
Helena Troy, the future Shield-Maiden.
