The Good

We've reached the halfway point and with each issue, I become more invested in this series. Too many times in past events, there's a lot of excitement in the beginning and then it all starts to go downhill. That is not the case with Jason Aaron's story.

On the surface, we have some great and different team-ups going on. As the players all move to different areas of the board, we're starting to see them all actually come together. For a story centering on the murder/mystery of the Watcher, having other mysteries simply adds some spice to the already interesting story. You have to admit the final page of last issue was a bit of a shocker. As jaded comic book readers, we may have all bee skeptical but there's no denying the powerful image it left us with. Obviously we do get some follow up to that incident but it may not end quite like you might have tried to predict.

Even though this story involves a large portion of the Marvel Universe, it's pretty cool seeing these little secret groups working on trying to get answers, even if they're not fully sure who they're actually working for. As different characters come together, it's almost a little odd seeing them (Gamora and Emma Frost? Punisher and Rocket Raccoon?), but it does work out nicely. This type of cohesion is what we should have in such a rich comic book universe. They may not have worked together before but it's likely they know most of the other players.

As a long time fan of Mike Deodato, I am overjoyed to see his art on this series. He has a knack for being able to draw pretty much everyone and Frank Martin's art makes it all even prettier to look at. Once again, we get a glorious last page that might leave your jaw hanging a little.

The Bad

There are a couple moments the inking or color makes things a little muddy. It's not a huge problem and I can easily live with it.

The Verdict

Despite how often we have big comic book events and crossovers, it's not every day we have one that keeps you glued to the pages every single issue. While focusing on the big mystery of who killed the Watcher, Jason Aaron is giving us other mysteries that are keeping us in suspense and making our jaws drop. Mike Deodato and Frank Martin are delivering great art and color. The dark feel of the art really adds to the tone of the story. The worst part is now having to wait for the next issue.

that seems to be the marvel way. Always not killing off someone for good. I mean Nick Fury is cool and all and I'm glad he's still alive but if your going to kill off a character,at least make it for a little while, not half an issue. Is The Winter Soldier still the culprit from issue 3?

I still don't get two things: Why does everybody keep telling that they never liked Bucky? Something's wrong here. And how the heck Wolverine though that Bucky was dead? He met him in WS ongoing, right? He punched him.

I liked the end, which seems to imply that Nick Fury may have been using LMDs since way back in the day, and has been aging normally the whole time (or maybe not). The various team ups have been kind of annoying though; why are they getting so pushy with each other like when Panther basically tells Moon Knight to control his woman. And of course once again Gamora, who is supposed to be so dangerous, never quite manages to prove it on panel (unfortunately). And, there have now been 3 separate people to say they never liked Bucky. It's annoying. And Dedato needs to learn to draw thighs that are not twice as thick as they should be.

But, all those complaints aside, I do like that this is a Marvel event that isn't following the normal path of "character gets amp that makes them nigh-omnipotent, the other characters team up to defeat him." A mystery is a nice change of pace.

Aside from everyone's attitude toward Bucky (and some continuity confusion with him and them), it was a solid issue, liked the ending.

@kleo_94:

I totally agree: I don't get why characters are saying they never liked Bucky. He proved himself a hero as Cap, more than redeemed himself, I just don't get it. Now I get why MK & Gamora was pissed, they were stranded. Everybody else? Guess they're just haters lol. Haters gonna hate, Buck. And Wolvie needs to remember when he was a brainwashed killing machine before he starts judging Buck. But that's a minor gripe. But the ending was awesome, can't wait to see what happens next. As a Bucky & Fury fan I'm pretty pleased. Glad to see them both at the center of something big.

@winter_kills: Right? It's not like this is something that has no meaning. It's too visible to have no meaning, and now I refer to 3 people saying they never liked Buck. On the one hand, it's understandable why Logan or Castle wouldn't like him, but still, I say they are neutral towards Buck at least. I don't see how they don't like him. It's weird that all of a sudden 3 ppl say that they never liked Bucky. I know that it's little thing comparing to Fury being old and having a bunch of copies, but still it matters for me.

@kleo_94: I agree 100% bro. I just feel like there's some continuity confusion with Bucky. When you've followed the character since Bru's run & been a fan ever since, it just kinda makes you scratch your head. It's like there's a misunderstanding with his character interactions and who knows he's truly alive, & that was one of the things I was afraid of happening when I learned he was going to be a player in the book. I hope things straighten out a bit as the story progresses.

The Punisher was such a bad ass in this issue. And yes I agree I doubt anyone was surprised that it was just an LMD that Bucky killed. So all this time the Fury that we've been reading for decades now has been LMDs all along? It makes sense why he wasn't affected by the explosion in the 2nd issue but all along he's been actually aging all these years.

This wasn't hard to figure out. All the little losers over at CBR are having a hard time guessing why Fury is old.

Fury gave Bucky the last of his Infinity formula to rapidly heal him. He doesn't have anymore so now he's rapidly aging. Unless if Aaron ignores this storyline.

I think he started to age maybe around the end of Fear Itself since there was that 7.1 issue that does go into the subject .

Lots of plates spinning on this one, but I am really enjoying it. The different groupings of characters have had some great interactions, the sleight of hand plot-work is doing wonders for renewing my interest every time I think I've got things figured out (though I called it as an LMD as well... AND if you look at my old posts, I said right at the start that the "shadowy figure" was ALSO Nick Fury... that's right, I am some sort of genius... cough...), and I just like the different flavour of the whole event.

Two weeks ago, when people were all "Bendis foreshadowed Bucky's actions ten years ago", I said that the Bendis thing was just random stuff that was never meant to be, and Bucky was simply misunderstood. I'm glad to be right, Bucky is one of my favorite characters and I would hate to see him ruined.

Part of me believes Aaron may be ignoring Winter Soldier's series where all of that happens. Another reason why is how Wolverine acted surprised to learn that Bucky was still alive, even though Wolverine already knew this. It's possibly, due to Hulk being in the room at the time, that Wolverine was just covering for Bucky by "acting" surprised. But I fear Aaron may simply be ignoring Bucky's series and doing his own thing. :(

About Fury, it wasn't a big surprise to me that the "shadowy figure/mysterious boss" was actually the real Nick Fury. I suspected that could be him anyways. But, coming back to the issue. I don't know why Aaron would ignore completely Winter Soldier series, storylines there are important, he can't just ignore it. I was also a bit surprised that in the first issue, when Fury (yeah, LMD) was talking about Bucky and the best steak he's ever had, Natasha ignored the part about Bucky, didn't she? In WS series, her memory of Bucky was gone completely, so why didn't she ask who Bucky was, or why Fury, Logan and Steve discuss this knowing that she has no memory of him, it was just... Weird to read and see no reaction. Or am I missing something and Natasha knows about Bucky somehow? Or is it that her memory of him with her was just earsed? Geez, Original Sin.

I would argue its hard to keep up with every plotline (even when there's a responsibility to do so) since there is so many, but it wasn't a random mini. It was a Brubaker Winter Soldier series. Seems important.

Some devil's advocate though: Was Widow wiped entirely of Bucky (Cap's very well known WWII sidekick) or just of her romantic time with him since his resurrection?

@slamadams: That's exactly what I meant. It was long ongoing, long and important enough to follow its storyline. Especially when it comes to Winter Soldier's character, now that he's popular and all. And still, my question is:

Was Widow wiped entirely of Bucky (Cap's very well known WWII sidekick) or just of her romantic time with him since his resurrection?

It was kind of long. It was 14 issues with Brubaker and that arc. haha.

I misread your earlier post. I believe it was just her time with Winter Soldier that was erased. That's how I remember it

@slamadams: So generally, she could be aware of who Bucky was, but the only thing she doesn't remember is her time with Bucky? Seems legit. However... One thing here: In WS #14:

Bucky: Natasha, please... It's me, Bucky... It's James.

Natasha: Who the hell is Bucky?

The thing I don't get is why Bucky blew up Moon Knight/Gamora's ship. I think he said he wanted to protect them or something? It didn't make sense to me, they all ended up in the same place anyway.

Avatar image for slamadams

@kleo_94: Don't remember that. Suppose, on one hand, it doesn't stretch credulity that a spy with access to the Avengers database could EVENTUALLY be filled on at least Bucky's WWII exploits and, at most, up to his second death when he was active as Captain America and an Avenger. Yet, on the other hand, Aaron clearly missed, forgot, or is ignoring that Winter Soldier series. Ignoring it would be pretty bad. Missing or forgetting it less so.
