Not necessarily a true story but films set at least 20 years or so before they were made and don't contain any supernatural / sci-fi elements.

A lot to remember but for me it's something like...

  1. Django Unchained
  2. Inglorious Basterds
  3. Sherlock Holmes A Game of Shadows (2011)
  4. Sherlock Holmes (2009)
  5. Gladiator
  6. Apocalypto
  7. The Godfather
  8. Wu Xia (Dragon)
  9. The Hateful Eight
  10. Ip Man

Honourable mentions: Braveheart, Ip Man 2, Black Death, the Sergio Leone films.

@discipulus: Very nice. Unforgiven and a Few Dollars more are the only ones I've seen of these, I've been told to watch Seven Samurai many times though.

@general_disarray: Thanks! Films 4, 6 and 7 on my list are all directed by the same man (Akira Kurosawa), and so if you ever get around to watching Seven Samurai and like it, I highly recommend Rashomon and The Hidden Fortress. The latter film actually served as something of a template for Star Wars!

Good to see this film getting love, it's often overlooked but I think it definitely deserved to beat E.T for Best Picture.

Also I'd add Shutter Island too because I think that qualifies if I'm correct about when it was set

I wanted to try and avoid loading this list up with war films, because I am hoping there might be a separate thread for that soon. Even so, a few films which take place during wars still made the cut. For these movies, the war is the setting, it is not the focus. So here they are in no particular order:

I've seen very few "historical" films that are all that accurate, but I like these anyway even with their glaring inaccuracies...some are better than others though.

  1. The Alamo (the new one)
  2. Saving Private Ryan
  3. Enemy At The Gates
  4. The Patriot
  5. Henry V (Kenneth Brannaugh version)
  6. Platoon
  7. Braveheart
  8. Glory
  9. Patton
  10. The Last Emporer
