First of all_ has ANYBODY noticed that this is reportedly the FORTY FIFTH spree killing(esp at a place of education) in the US this year???

Just as predictably as a Kabuki dance, the Left(broadly associated with the Democratic Party) will call for tighter gun control legislation, the Right( associated with the Republicans) will argue that now is not the time to politicize a tragedy for partisan advantage( where was this sentiment in 2001 when certain conservative commentators chose to blame 9/11 not on Al Qaeda but"feminists. liberals and socialists"???) and then disengenuously assert the NRA trope"that the only answer to a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun" AND NOTHING WILL HAPPEN UNTIL THE NEXT SPREE KILLING!!!!

For some time, my American friend Julia Millard and myself have been arguing as to whether my concern for her physical safety is overblown- she makes the point that violent crime levels in the US have been dropping since the 1990s and anyway spree killings such as Virginia Tech and now Oregon college are comparatively rare. I reply that these incidents might be rare comparatively but to those literally "caught in the crossfire" this view is cold comfort)either to them or their grieving relatives- I rest my case.

Speaking as a citizen of a polity(the UK) where guns and other deadly weapons are at least modestly regulated by law, I can only heave a sigh of relief that I am not an American citizen or resident!

You just compared a shooting spree where ten people died by a lone gunman to several planes being hijacked and then being crashed into two skyscrapers which collapsed within hours, and which caused almost 3,000 deaths by multiple dudes dying in the name of Allah.

You are right though. Nothing is going to happen or change. The same cycle will happen as you have stated, the left and right will sling crap at each other instead of actually trying to have an actual discussion about what could be done to try and stop this from happening, things will go back to normal until the next one happens, and repeat.

@sophia89: "The people can breath freely again," .... No pedestrian in that video looked the least bit concerned about him having a chainsaw or the police there.... They just kinda kept on walking and going about their business. What a silly thing to say, the narrator was acting like the cops just managed to stop the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Push the gun thing in a box for now and let's focus on the human element

Is there a problem with society or are some people just born broke and it's something we need to deal?

Well. Seeing as how you don't know who the lunatic is until they kill a bunch of people, you can't really fix that.

You could, however, leave the lunatics with sticks and knives rather than guns. If someone can stab 12 people to death before being subdued then the SWAT team has a Ninja on their hands.

False flags everywhere.

The day where a lot of campuses start allowing open carry a shooting just coincidentally happens, sure.

Is there not a pattern?

We know they are always males.

Are they always lonely? medicated? from broken families? history of mental health? etc

@sophia89: I'm sorry but a MEDC country which has already had 264 mass shootings already this year and you want to try attacka different country which has no relation At all to the subject at hand?! I'm sorry but perhaps your guns laws may not need to change however there is a big problem occurring in America and its naive, ignorant and arrogant to think otherwise

Problem is. Americans believe gun control is taking away their toys. It shouldnt be. But it should be regulated or at least have a character test before you are allowed to get a gun. That way crazy people cant get guns legally.

I've seen people get chased in the UK for having a tiny pocket knife........... And also quit comparing the US to the UK. You can take the UK, Canada, and Australia combine them and not have the US population. If you scale the US down or them up it's a lot closer than you think.

And who gets to choose who passes the test?

Also crazy people are really good at hiding their illness, and can blend in.

There is also the race motivated attacks these people aren't mentally ill.

ETC.

Also:

Americans believe gun control is taking away their toys

The gun nutjobs maybe, but sane ones know the second protects the first.

Teams of experienced psychiatrists would do the job. Or many of the other simple and effective systems.

Or, what i believe is even a better choice - limit the ammo supply. You dont need a lot of bullets for self defense. And you most definitely dont need a lot of guns for self defense.

In Serbia you have to state the reason why you are getting the gun, register yourself as a gun owner. Also, you have to get the mandatory training with weapons for every gun owner and if you have ever been to jail for a crime you cant have a gun at all.

Also, you have to have safe storage for ammo.

On average Gun nuts dont like checking statistics. But if a 100 kids die every year because people in america are not forced to take proper care of their weapons it is time for a change. Not even talking about the killing sprees. They happen because you have a bully culture where a lot of people snap.

For every justifiable gun defense kill there were TWO accidentals.

"Freedom" to do what? Given that the only industrialized Western democracy without meaningful curbs on firearms is the US, I for one am happy that I live in a "police state". Several years ago I once went into a Philadelphia sporting goods store( i was visiting my cousins for Thanksgiving at the time) and was astonished to find an AK47 assault rifle(which has no hunting or sporting use) for sale!

"American "freedom" comes at an unacceptably high price to my mind!

God dammit. This doesn't happen anywhere else. Condolences to the family who lost their loved ones.

Just like always, the White House will express their condolences to the families and after that, they won't give a shit about it. They must be playing some kind of part in these killing sprees. Don't try to think I'm an Alex Jones fan or something but come on people! This just doesn't happen and in America nowadays, it happens every year.

This is the government's way so that people will be afraid and surrender their guns and there is a right to have bare arms so, they are clearly breaking a constitutional law. After the masses have surrendered their arms, the government will find it easier to control people and the whole country. If you don't know what I'm talking about, just look at the states in Hunger Games. That will be the future of America...........................

This is true but the American machismo tends to shine sadly with this subject. Pro gun people will say that I teach my kids gun safety. Sadly, they don't realize that you also taught your child how to take off the safety, aim and shoot. Media will say its about mental illness. Some could be that, but in a world where you taught your kid to handle a gun along with 1st person shooting guns to breed the mindset, all it takes is one person to get mad at another person and BAM, they are dead. America has like 45% of people with a criminal record. Obama just said we put more people in jail than China.

I believe the 2nd Amendment is out of date to todays world since it was made when America was coming out of the war. The best way to support the military back then from foreign invasion was freedom to arm their citizens. When was the last time America was actually invaded? The best way to stop gun killing is to take away the guns. You want the alcoholic to stop drinking???Place him in an environment without alcohol. I have a co-worker that has something that looks like a M2 Browning and a P90. You don't need that to hunt deer.

With all that said, I moved to the South a year ago and if ISIS were to ever due damage in America, Im pretty sure the South would be the last part of America that would submit. I have a carbon flex bow and samurai swords.

This is sickening. Makes me not want to live in AMerica anymore. People just have too much freedom and don't know what to do with it.

That said though, sure is hell not going to the U.K. where they let killers go and give them new identities
