Poll Would you say internet debating is pointless? (64 votes)

Yes 67%
No 33%

It seems that when debating with people, that they are either too prideful to admit that they are wrong or too stubborn to change their views, no matter how good an argument the other side goes. Usually, this often dissolves into name calling or people just stop responding and going their separate ways only to parrot back the same views in another similar instance, where such debate presents itself. Another instance I've seen in debating is something called bully tactics, or mob mentality, whereby the majority force their view onto the minority, ridicule them and basically shame them into submitting to their view points. This is not unlike what liberals do and did during Trumps debate, with heavy media bias, outrage and intolerance at Trump winning the election.

So what is the point of debating when everyone considers themselves right and no one ever really wants to change their views? Why waste time debating when at the end of it you end up with everyone just feeling frustrated, angry, headache and with no change happening at all?

Yes.

I would be ok with that if people didn't treat it as something to win or beat the other person.

Its entertaining in my opinion.

It forces you to learn some stuff that otherwise you might not have interest of knowing

It develop your researching skills.

The secret is to not take things too personal and the to realize when to quit when the discussion had become to toxic.

Though going all the way may sometimes feels good too, specially when you're pissed in real life.

Yeah it's mostly pointless and people rarely change their minds, but reading other people's debates can often be very entertaining.

The most pointless Internet debates are religious debates. Those NEVER end with someone changing their mind or point of view and almost never go well.

Depends on the subject. When it comes to the big stuff: religion, politics, DC vs Marvel, people will never budge or change their minds.

99% of the time yes. There some interesting argument that is actually informative., but for the most part is just people wanting their opinion to be validated.

Internet Debating Is For Entertainment... So It's Not Pointless. Some People Take It Too Extremes Where They Say Insane Things When You Push Their Buttons A Little In A Debate. There Is The Entertainment.

I learn a lot from other people by debating them. I hope they learn something from me. I don't care if that shows up in the debate or not.

I always live by a self-imposed rule; no more than three replies per thread. If you can't get your thoughts across in three posts, then they are too muddled to be worth anyone's time or the other person has taken an uncompromising stance. In either case, you're just wasting everyone's time by pushing beyond three.

I don't usually debate. I state my opinion and then I move on with my life. I also read other people's opinions but I rarely agree with them. Close minded, eh I'm okay with that.

@watcher5000: They could think that but that is a close minded idea IMO. You have to debate in order to change opinions (at least any opinion that matters), even if it is just with yourself.

But my point was that you think that internet debates are pointless you are saying that internet cannot change even your mind (otherwise it wouldn't be pointless).

If this is about the Battle Forums on here, yes, it's "pointless" but obviously entertaining. Look how many partake in it? Clearly fun.

If you mean in general, as in, debating issues found in our world, then I'd say it's not pointless. I've found debates are a great way to not just obtain information, but be exposed to perspectives I'd otherwise not even be aware of, let alone be capable of imagining. My favourite debates are ones where I've felt enlightened to the point I've altered my stance on things. For example, not that I subscribe to a white and black way of thinking but over the past few years, discovering I've been guilty of obstinate idealism in the face of realism has been life changing. No hyperbole. Now I've learned to shut up more and listen. Well, at least I'm trying to.

What's pointless is when you come across a situation where a person is simply spouting off a narrative. That's soap boxing and ain't nobody got time for that. True debates are when both sides consider the other, and address those points. Coherently and respectfully. I know, stuff of unicorns, but this can and does exist. Delicious to come across.

I tend to avoid Religious and Political debates, as the person you're debating will most likely not admit to his loss even tho you debunk every argument he has.

It really depends on who is debating tbh. I have seen some debates here in the past that were actually rather educational, at least when it comes to comics anyway. As for religious and political debates, yeah those if they start ok, they usually degenarate into insults and name calling. People tend to have strong feelings when it comes to those two and with the freedom that comes with the anonymity online, they tend to go wild.
