@ccthor: They could learn a lesson without me "being a little pissed".

Patience is the key to handling children.

What kind of question is that? I'm not a teacher.

Is this a big deal in the U.S? It's not something that happens too often in the U.K. as far as I'm aware. Hell, once I went to college the teachers despised being called by their surnames.

What would you react if a 10 years old neighbour kid just calls you "hey, Jack(assuming that's your name)"?

@ccthor: Pretty close to my actual name. I wouldn't be fussed as it's always been weird to me when they refer me to my surname. I had people who I didn't even know that knew my name when I was living in a small town.

I'm not seeing an issue with this. At worst I'd be weirded out if the kid was really young.

@ccthor: Back when I was in school, most of the kids in my class (myself included), referred to our teachers as Miss/Sir depending on their gender. I didn't even know their names, I just knew that's what I had to call them out of respect. Kids still do it to this day. It was quite a shock to find that college teachers hated being called that as they didn't feel that it put everyone on an equal playing field.

I don't even refer to people by their surname as I don't know it half the time. It's not something that's commonly done anymore. Even when going for job interviews they introduced themselves by first name.

Anyone who takes themselves that seriously to get bothered by that needs to lighten up.

It's not helpful for the child's humility but it's possible that the child was raised to be disrespectful and rude so I'd feel sorry for him/her. The kid could just be a brat but then I'd feel sorry for the parents or anyone who is working to discipline him/her.

I can't vote for many of your polls because your stipulations for your "yes"'s and "no's" don't align with my reasonings.

Why do you jump to giving a child a beating? That is awful.

So you assume all that just because the kid didn't say "Mr.Infantfinite"?

Assume all that? The kid could call me stupid butthead poopy face and he could be a great kid who was just trying to make me laugh.

Is this your kid? I'm not judging your parenting skills.

This is way too much time spent on thinking about a hypothetical kid.

For some parents it is, for others it isn't. A lot of parents (including mine when I was younger) insist their kids address any adult they meet as "Mr." or "Mrs." But other parents don't care unless they're referring to someone important like a teacher. And I can't imagine college professors here not wanting to be addressed by their last name.

No. Not unless there's a reason for them to call me Mr. And even then, I'm not gonna be pissed about it.

@batmanplusjay: Get off my lawn! I'm going full on Homer Simpson "Why you little?" on all these punks.

Thank you for calling that out. Heck, I was dumber than Homer.

Given these options, I may have read a bit too much into this scenario.

Then to answer the question. I voted no.

A kid could call me by my first name or pus brain puke snot and it wouldn't anger me. I would think the latter was funny and I laugh about it when the kid wasn't looking.

It may be against etiquette in some places. But really, even if it is, can't you let it slide for kids?

Seems like such a trivial matter to be pissed about.

My surname is Prince, so hearing Mr. Prince all the time just sounds weird as hell. Matt's just fine with me.
