Poll World Cup 2018 Predictions (42 votes)

France 7%
Germany 33%
Spain 5%
Brazil 21%
England 7%
Portugal? 5%
Argentina 7%
Other 14%

My friends! Although there is still quite a lot of discussion about the UEFA Champions League going on, I think it's time we start talking about the World Cup that's going to take place in Russia this summer. The World Cup is easily the most exciting and the most prestigious trophy in the sport, and after another thrilling competition in 2014, yet another rises on the horizon. Who will lift the grand cup this year? Will Germany win two in a row and tie with Brazil for most world cups? Will France's prolific striking force finally seal the deal after failure in the Euros? Will Spanish superstars' growth get yet another title for Spain this century? Will Brazil get revenge after being humiliated in their own country four years ago? Will... England... finally get something done? Can Leo Messi (the best) lead his team to the trophy he so much desires? Can a confident Portugal team with Ronaldo on fire shock the world again just two years after France? Leave your thoughts down below!

Brazil. They will be hungry to set right what happened in 2014 and they looked imperious in qualifying. They have top class players in every position as well. Two of the best goalies in the world in Alisson and Ederson, possibly the best right and left backs in the world (Alves and Marcelo), centre back is their weakest position as players like Thiago Silva, David Luiz and Miranda maybe aren't as good as they were a few years ago, but they are still good players. Paulinho and Casemiro in midfield, with Willian, Coutinho, Jesus and Neymar up top.

Germany, Spain and France are all strong contenders as well. Argentina were lucky to qualify and seemingly don't gel well as a team at all. Though Portugal won the Euros, they didn't play very well and got really quite lucky so I don't see them doing that again. Both Ronaldo and especially Messi have quite poor records in major international competitions and I don't expect that to change, but of course you can never rule those guys out. England won't be winning anything.

I cant really make a proper prediction right now, have to wait until the season ends because of possible injuries etc.

Thats why I love and support Deutschland.

They were all about team work and less about predictable set pieces to pass to their best player.

And team work paid off.

Impossible to say, there are tons of strong contenders.

I hope Germany wins though, I'm from there after all.

If Italy gets qualified and at least decent coach they win with mid-effort.

Lol, no Belgium? They have Hazard - Lukaku - De Brewin in front, you know that? They should be at least mentioned in that list.

@whyzoserious:

I didn't mention Belgium? That must have been my bad then.

I don't think they're actual candidates though. Well, some of them on the list really aren't but I only put England because- well- I was afraid I'd trigger some people by leaving it blank, Portugal because formality (won the Euros after all) and Argentina due to Leo Messi and reaching the final in 2014 despite them looking a bit lackluster in qualifying.

Someone actually voted for Portugal?

It's that I haven't voted due to myself being undecided as to the winner (and last time I voted- Champions League thread- boy did I get it wrong) so I don't know the poll results.

I just voted myself (Germany- they're not as shiny but I think they're better suited for this and are more solid) and can see that people have voted for Portugal, yeah. More so than Argentina.

Surprised that no one has voted for Spain.

2 weeks old... but nevertheless, a pressing topic. Hopefully Australia win, but realistically I think Germany will win.

Germany, Spain, or France. All three have amazing squad depth. A great overall team. And great individuals in almost every single position.

I'll just do Group Predictions for now.

A- Uruguay 1st because of Luis Suarez and an all round decent squad, then Egypt Second, Salah will be carrying them Messi style.

B- 1st Portugual, they're a great squad. Everyone was so determined that they'd lose vs France in the final when Ronaldo came off but they proved everyone wrong, great passion. Lots of players have done well over the season as well. Spain will probably make it to second this year, they've gotten rid of Bosque and have way too much quality in their squad.

C- This is pretty simple, France 1st and Denmark 2nd.

D- A. Messi will carry Argentina to first (as per usual) and the sheer quality in Croatias side tips them to Second, but I would not be surprised if Nigeria somehow creeped into 2nd.

E- Oh god, Brazil. Will they actually get it right this year? Will Costa Rica do a shocker again? Mmmm I think Rica and Brazil will progress but I don't know who will finish 1st/2nd

F- Oh look who it is, Germany. I'm 90 percent sure they'll finish 1st. Their second squad would probably finish 1st lol. Ahhh 2nd would go to Mexico.

G- Soutgates an idiot with his squad selection but England will (hopefully) grab 2nd while Belgium take 1st.

H- Lewa always does shit internationally, I can see Colombia taking 1st and Senegal settling with 2nd, sorry Poland.

Ah, I see.

Looking back on it, I think Hart should have gone, even as third goalkeeper.

Harry Maguire... ehhh.

Loftus-Cheek? What did he do to get on to the World Cup? Why not Wilshere who actually played some games for Arsenal this season and has been linked to Juve and Milan?

These would probably be my main gripes with the team, but what are yours? The same? Any other player who you feel should or should not have gone?

@dark-sith123: Mainly midfield. Wilshere, Lallana... But we choose Loftus Cheek. I even would've prefered Shelvey to Loftus Cheek. And why is Welbeck still getting chances? Honestly, we should've went for Wilson as our reserve striker. I think we went for Maguire for versatility as he can play out on the right. Its just a bit of a mess.

Yeah, Hart has the experienceee.

The England National team cycle every major tournament :

  1. Enter with high prospects
  2. Play a good opening game
  3. Get knocked out of either the group stage or round of 16
  4. Sack the manager
  5. Repeat.

Yeah. Southgate's quite at fault there.

I even would've prefered Shelvey to Loftus Cheek.

I'm not sure if I would go that far but yeah, Shelvey is far more mature and experienced.

And why is Welbeck still getting chances?

I'd say he's an OK reserve.

Honestly, we should've went for Wilson as our reserve striker.

You mean Callum Wilson from Bournemouth, right?

Yeah, Hart has the experienceee.

I also feel a bit bad for the man. He was starting at City two seasons ago, made the semis of the UCL, and now he's where he is... absolute misery.
