For those of you unaware the NYT employed an editor Sarah Jeong who unleashed a slew of racist and sexist tweets on Twitter. The NYT stood by her and hasn't fired her for her posts. Nor has she apologized for them as well. The hypocrisy seems to be evident especially when others have lost their jobs over whats been said on their Twitter accounts.

For those interested heres a shortlist of tweets she made. Fair warning they are vile and contain strong language in them. [Deleted since the language breaks rules.]

That's a good question. That's definitely promoting hate speech. That would ordinarily cause one to lose a job or even a career. Maybe she's a really good editor?

Because she was mocking the kind of racist and misogynistic abuse that's come her way as an Asian-American woman and fired it right back at the people who sent it.

I'm going to guess if this was some one from the right posting racist or sexist tweets and he was being fired for said tweets, you would be defending him and saying what he posted was free speech.

Am I right?

She needs to be fired. You can't cherry pick when to uphold your values. She was legit calling white people goblins, and sharing how much she likes being cruel to old white men among other things. Her continued employment hurts the progressive movement she likely identifies with.

I feel like she was trying to be comedic, but they don't really come off like that. She seems like an aggressive, hypocritical "SJW". And I hate using the term negatively because everyone should fight for social justice, but damn am I not disappointed with the NYT.

Ironically enough, the most tame post is the #cancelwhitepeople one. If you use twitter you'd know everyone gets heat every now and then. It's like Southpark.

I've never said a single thing to this woman in my life. Why is she insulting me if that was what she was doing?

And this is the NYT's response to it:

“Her journalism and the fact that she is a young Asian woman have made her the subject of frequent online harassment,” the Times’ communications Twitter account said in a statement, addressing the old tweets by Jeong, newly resurfaced, in which she waxes ironic about white people. “For a period of time she responded to that harassment by imitating the rhetoric of her harassers. She sees now that this approach only served to feed the vitriol that we often see on social media. She regrets it, and The Times does not condone it.”

I'd give her the benefit of the doubt if she was only saying that stuff in replies but she wasn't. They seem to just be regular post.

Which has been given context to why she made them, her employer does not condone them but isn't about to fire her for ancient tweets. Especially not when they suspect she's the next James Gunn, a target of right-wing trolls who mine dirt on the internet.

What i'm saying is that those post were made outside of the context they gave. Yeah, I understand their logic, but The NYT set this precedent themselves. It hurts their stance if they start cherry picking when to enforce it.

And regardless of their political views, James Gunn deserved to be taken down imo that shit was weird af

No, they are being taken out of context by the dirt-miners who want to see her fired. And what precedence is that? That they aren't beholden to internet trolls who dig up ancient tweets no one really cares about any more? If she had made any of these tweets now, then it would indeed be a problem for them... but right now the only people who will make a huge fuss about them aren't reading the Times anyways.

No, he did not. And I must say I find it blisteringly idiotic and wrong headed that a man can get fired for bad humored jokes over half a decade ago. This isn't like you found out he once raped someone, or is a had kiddie-porn on his computer or anything remotely serious... he got fired for having a bad sense of humor once.

Okay, but now imagine this scenario, the same concept, but cross-out "white" in her post and write down "black". Would you still be defending someone saying "I hate black people", "Dumbass *** black people", "Black men are bullshit", "I enjoy being cruel to old black men"?

I disagree. Her comments were very in context by the people who dug them up. She was trashing white people. And like I said before, I'd forgive her if she was only fighting vitriol with vitriol but the majority of those comments weren't in response to anyone.

The NYT fired that Norton lady earlier this year, granted her tweets were much worse. The NYT also supported Rosanne getting fired, and were supportive of people calling out all those baseball players.

Nah, he did. I'd agree with you if he had a handful of tasteless jokes, but the dude had thousands. And they weren't even jokes, they were just statements. Nobody wants to be associated with that.

@outside_85:

Because I am a light skinned male with European features who would typically be considered "white", which her tweets are actively attacking and demonizing. Even if I was not the target, she was still insulting me by making wide blanket statements about many varieties of people based on their skin color.

That is why racial prejudice is so damaging. You're not just insulting the individual, you're insulting everyone loosely connected to that individual based on purely superficial details. Even if she didn't intend to call me specifically a goblin that doesn't deserve the sun and doesn't have a culture of his own, that is still in effect what she did by using a racial label.

No, because the people who dug it up took it out of context and presented her as if she was just like them. Have you considered that was because she blocked the people firing garbage at her and then responded by shooting off garbage of her own into her own timeline?

I dont know about Norton or the baseball players to be honest, so I can't comment on them. And yes a lot of people supported sacking Barr, because Barr was spewing her hatred and bigotry right in this moment, that's what got her fired, even if pretty much everyone knew she was always like that and she's been caught continuing to do so afterwards.

Disney has no spine and there are too much money in right-wing whack jobs. Thing is Gunn was a comedian back then, good or bad, the large majority of comedians have offensive material in their back catalogue that when returned to years later makes either no sense or is somehow even more offensive than it was back then. I'll give you an example, courtesy of Bill Maher, now imagine going back to that in say 5 years and see how well it works:

'This week he (Trump) held two of his hillbilly Nuremberg rallies. It’s scary to people in this profession, he calls the media the ‘enemy of the people,’” said Maher. “Except of course, for Fox News. They’re so far up his ass they’re the ‘enema of the people.’”

You know, I might have been wrong... that you are this offended by some texts written 4 years ago sort of proves you are the kind of person she was talking to.

What more is there to say about New York that hasn't already been said? The public transportation is atrocious (a homeless man spit on me while I was riding to work one day), the school system is godawful, and if you're looking for culture you've definitely come to the wrong place. All I can say is that, if it were up to me this festering, David Foster Wallace-esque dystopian nightmare of twisted concrete, burning asphalt, and ineffectual, brain numbing, bite-sized entertainment would've been the testing site of a new ICBM so powerful it was guaranteed to destroy any sign that this testament to humanity's boundless hedonism ever existed. All that would be left is a smoldering crater and I hope that one day, the memory of this modern Tower of Babel would be stricken from my memory and the memory of anybody who ever had to lay eyes upon this abomination

What's the proof that her anti-white racist remarks are responses for such attacks?

Most of her tweets are posted as a stand-alone statement, not replying to anyone?

They are habitual and often had a pattern, repetitive theme about wiping out white people.

With terms like cancel, extinctions, death.

The point is her tweets themselves don't have any context at all if you read them by themselves, the "context" were deliverd more as an after thought after her bullshits got mainstream and the NYT prompted to defend her.

And speaking of context, maybe you should hold the same standards for people like Trump, media had a habit of taking his actions and tweets out of context.

Remember when his "animal" remarks about MS 13 gang was taken out of context by the media? or when he feed the fish in Japan and how the media feast on it to insult him when he was just following Abe's lead?

If it takes so little from a Asian American woman to rile you up, I imagine you also go on a similar tantrum if that 3rd generation Mexican manages to make your taco improperly.

That you have very very thin skin and is generally unfamiliar with how racial inequality impacts people who are not white?

So you're saying there is actually no rational and objective context to it?

Other than it is based on an all encompassing and fully generalized race-base profiling?

Well i think it's correct for her critics to call her racist then.

Because for some reason it's perfectly fine to make fun of white people now despite the fact that countries with a higher concentration of whites generally have the best governments, least violence, corruption, racism and discrimination, best public health and education and overall best quality of life. I am a brown dude and have thus faced plenty of racism but that wouldn't make it okay for me to say all white people are evil. This woman is nothing more than a stupid, angry and hypocritical SJW who contributes nothing to anything other than bullshit.

I do not think is double standard per say. What she say was in the past and it is easy to get angry when sexism and racism is thrown at you. I remember wanting to said to a lady "just like how ape and africans are the same thing" as a reply to her racist remark. Is not that I am a racist, it just the fact that someone is being racist, amd I wamt to throw that same level of hate back. But I dod not replied with that since I learn from high school what you said and the intent are not mutually exclusive. What can be seen as a joke or trying to be edgy and offensive against a group of people making fun of you, could be just seen as offensive and bigoted.

So I can understand her comments and it is in the past and we should be allow to grow from it.

That being said is not counter trolling, since she not replying to people, so NY time response just seem weak. Plus if she has not apologize, that also seem a bit fishy. But I do think the situation is a bit more complicated than double standard.

Sorry, but context my ass.

If you replace the word white with "black", "gay", "Asian", "Trans", "Muslim", "Hispanic", what have you The New York Times, CNN, and a slew of other news outlets and activist groups would be screaming for her head.

Period.

As much as I want to smack this dumb you-know-what, I'm tired of people losing employment opportunities because random folks on the internet don't like what they said years and years ago. If we want people like James Gunn or Dan Harmon to stop being harassed needlessly, we need to treat those we don't agree with the same way we'd treat those we do agree with. Yes, she's a POS, but I think it's more likely that she just bashed white people because it's hip and "in" to do so. I know many friends (mostly other white people lol) that do the same crap. They're not actually racist, just losers that can't think for themselves. Let her have her job. If you don't like what she said, stop reading NYT or whatever. Just stop tattling on people. lol

To be clear, I'm not saying she should necessarily lose her job since it's clearly not affecting the NYT sales. Rosanne got fired (I believe) because what she said was almost certainly going to cause boycotts and sponsorship loss...in other words it was going to cost them money. I'm not so sure about the Disney and James Gunn thing...I don't know if that was ethics based or financially based...I think he's a scumbag asshole for writing what he wrote but I don't know if it's a fireable offense (to my way of thinking) if it's not going to affect their bottom line. I mean they're a business and they can do what they want, and I DO suppose their brand is "family entertainment" but...I don't know honestly on that one.

Still, ethically, it's a massive double standard. I think she should be called out and ripped on just like everybody else who says awful racist crap or other detestable crap; however I don't personally think people should lose their jobs unless what they've said outright defies a known rule established by the company they work for or threatens to cost the company money.

Because she isn't white. You knew that already though.

White people are being treated unfairly by each other, which is the funniest part...

I'm more on the practical side of things.

I think any applicants and/or employees who are potential liabilities deserves rejection and/or termination.

But in the case of NYT, I think Sarah Jeong will act as an attractor of their target demographics which are the progressives, feminists, Liberals, and Democrats.

They already have the narrative prepared for this.

She is to play as a poor victim of the alt-right, white supremacist, conservative, republicans, bullying, rallying like-minded people towards her cause and NYT time would be her savior.
