like, seriously, I can think of no media that atkles place in space, is science fiction, and doesn't have psychic characters
even shows that strive for semblance of scientific accuracy, like Firefly, have River Tam
any idea why this is?

There are dozens of sci-fi worlds without psychics
Far more than just dozens if you count non-mainstream stuff.

Dozens here in my statement was not meant as in 12. But as a generic statement of thjere being lots of sci-fi worlds without psychics

Everything must be literal!
Everything must be literal!
So we meet again my Arch-nemesis Captain Obvious! Let this be our final battle!

Today will be remembered as the day subtlety died!
A lot of times Aliens have psychic abilities is because are thought to be more evolved than we are yet.

which frankly is just lazy writing too often in sci-fi stories.
It just helps to be more advanced to explain why they figured out how to travel in space faster than we have accomplished.

Sci-fi is always lazy writing. That is the difference between science fiction and sic-fi.

could you name any sci-fi works that take place in space and have no psychics?
It doesn't.
when does it not?
@betatesthighlander1: Okay, then this one story with this armor thing that I don't remember the name of.
@decoyelite: Star Kid?
@betatesthighlander1: Nah. But that does remind that Ender's Game had no telepaths.
@decoyelite: the buggers
@betatesthighlander1: F***. I'm bad at this, so go try Crom. >.<
@crom_cruach: space sci-fi with no psychics?

Ahem, let's see...
I don't recall any psychics in anything I've read written by Arthur C. Clarke, for one- Earthlight, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Sands of Mars...need I go on? There's quite a few Asimov stories that don't involve psychics- The Currents of Space, for one, and The Martian Way. There's got to be some Ray Bradbury stories that don't involve psychics.
Were there any psychics in the new Star Trek movies? I don't remember them very well.
Wasn't the moloith essentially psychic?
and Asimov, RB-34 from "Liar!" was psychic
and SPock is still a telepath
@mrdecepticonleader: damn, that's a good point
I mean, a little bit in the novelization of Resurrection

Last time I checked you had to be a living thing to be a telepath, and I'm pretty sure the monolith isn't alive. I said quite a few Asimov stories, not all. Note that I mentioned ones I knew didn't have psychics.
Your assertation was that Space Sci-fi always has psychics. It doesn't.
@mrdecepticonleader: damn, that's a good point

Novelization. ? Pulling at straws a bit there.
And even if that was the case the first Alien still has no psychic connections. So there ya go :)
@mrdecepticonleader: yes, but the universe does

How do you figure that? it effects the minds of others directly, that is telepathy in some form
and the larger universe still has psychics
@betatesthighlander1: How so?
And the point is the film doesn't.
@mrdecepticonleader: well, I geuss my question was more about why every time people build a space-society, psychics come up
@mrdecepticonleader: well, I geuss my question was more about why every time people build a space-society, psychics come up
But they don't. The Alien franchise is a good example of that.

@squares: neither was RB-34 in the strictest sense, and he was telepathic

fair enough
any idea why they don't while so many others do?
That's not psionics, that's creating force fields from the armor that move stuff via your neural commands to your suit.
If you want Psychics in Halo, look to the Precurors who, in their form as the flood, could predator net entire solar systems apart with cosmic strings (like one dimensional black holes), in a smaller scale variation of the Xeelee's "piano wire a galaxy apart via cosmic strings" trick.
@agent_california: OK, thanks
@betatesthighlander1: And if you want a quote for the Flood being able to break space and time, think up invulnerable cosmic death wires, shut down technology, and "infect" A.Is with a virus that turns them just as surely as infection forms turn organic beings, read Greg Bear's Forerunner trilogy.
@guardiandevil83: Predators is in the same universe as Aliens which has been mentioned.

Not all do, as other people have mentioned. Most Sci Fi in general doesn't seem to.
@guardiandevil83: Predators is in the same universe as Aliens which has been mentioned.
Reason I did not mention Predator was because the OP was talking about Sci Fi that took place in space, and the Predator films don't take place in space.
@mrdecepticonleader: most space-centric sci-fi in gernal does have psychics
one universe has been provided where there are none (even than, only kinda)

How so only kinda? Where are there psychics in the Aliens universe?
And by space centric you mean just set in space?
@mrdecepticonleader: primarily set in space, yeah

Not trying to destroy your buzz, because I love all sci-fi threads but just the recent sci-fi movies alone would knock down this claim.
There're a lot of movie that has psychic elements involve, but not to the scale where they're taking over it all.
@mrdecepticonleader: OK, so taht is one example of a univese with no psychics
any others?

first of all, Pacific Rim had psychics (The Kaiju and their masters shared a mind)
second, not very many of those actually had any space stuff (Reel Steal and Gamer for sure)
@betatesthighlander1: Are you talking about universes as a whole?
Transformers. Is one off the top of my head.
