@super_ninja: So you don't like that one interpretation, which is fine, but that doesn't make it wrong.

World War Z is different compared to Walking Dead, who's "right" in that exchange ?

Some of the best vampire stories I've encountered come from foreign writers and directors. There's Chan-wook Park'sThirst, Tomas Alfredson's Let the Right One In and the classic Nosferatu the Vampyre by Werner Herzog. They're all far more interesting, in my opinion, than the majority of vampire shows and films that come from the Anglosphere.

Because they portray vampires as a sexual object instead of a monster...

Appealing to the edgy teen girl/bored soccer mom crowd.

I don't care what anybody says, they got vampires right from the moment they released the Twilight films.

Trolling. This is trolling. Please be advised that this is trolling.

There's no right or wrong in the first place. Just because a story doesn't adhere to whatever the "original" vampire mythos is doesn't make it bad. Storytelling/writing allows people to be creative and make something unique that's truly theirs, even if they were influenced from outside sources. If Vampires had to be portrayed the same way in all stories, it would get boring after a while.

It's hard to build characterization around a vampire without it being too cheesy, and there's always a lack of viewership and box office/payback risk for TV shows and movies respectively.

Just watch the classics. Go watch Bella Lugosi in Dracula, then you will never complain again. Or Christopher Lee as Dracula in the Hammer films. There's good classic vampires, you just have to watch the classics.

Movies today are just too fast paced for that type of movie anymore. Scenes of a vampire just staring at the camera for 15 seconds wouldn't have the impact like it used to with audiences today.

The vampire genre has been done right before. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a great series. (I never watched much of Angel, though.) The earlier seasons of True Blood are pretty enjoyable, too. Twilight, is, of course, awful, but we don't talk about that.

When making stories with vampires, there has to be a balance between sexy and horror. Most thing go too far one way or the other.

The above satire is better than almost every film mentioned in this thread.

Nosferatu w/max shreck depicts Vampires as they are described through most of recorded History preceding film.

I am partial to salems lots version and the classic Nosferatu the Vampyre by Werner Herzog.

Let the right one in was pretty epic too.

Sexy Vampires are a product of the Hollywood Concept molesting machine and suck arse.

The only Vampire I've ever known that they got "right" was in a video game, namely, Slayer from Guilty Gear

Blade, Interview with a Vampire, and Bram Stokers Dracula are the three best non-humorous vampire movies ever though imo.

There have been tons of good vampire movies over the years. The only problem vampires have is that there are two types of vampire movies and vampire fans tend to fall in one category or the other while disliking the alternative.

First there's the legit monster vampire. A cold hearted killer that uses guile and seduction as a means to exploit and consume their victim. I'm personally more of a fan of this variety. These vampires are unrepentant monsters usually, and see people as a food source. Of this type you have a few different variants of Dracula movies, Hellsing Ultimate, Van Helsing, Let Me In, 30 Days of Night, etc.

Then there's the heroic vampire. These are vampires who one can relate to and sympathize with, usually forced to harm humans as a curse. This also tends to be the sort that becomes cheesey romance fodder, but not always. True Blood, Vampire Diaries, Being Human, etc.

Neither is inherently better or worse than the other. It all comes down to preference. While I prefer my vampires to have a monstrous streak I can also enjoy a story of a repentant monster who wants to overcome his nature, or even a completely evil monster with a sympathetic tone. There is a LOT of overlap between these two types of vampire, and in my opinion a fictional work that manages to have both and make it feel natural and realistic have hit the cord on what an ideal vampire setting is all about.

@bella_blackstar: no ,talking about the twilight movies.

Vampires are as to the Twilight movies as Science Fiction is to Star Wars. It's a setting. Twilight is about Stephanie Myers (and a lot of other housewives) juvenile fantasies. She basically admits it in the interview she does with Terry Gross on NPR.

Also, yes I just compared Star Wars and Twilight MWA HA HA HA HA HA!!

@thekillerklok: This is a very big problem. Monsters are only monsters if you have something human to compare them to. It when you have vampires that are living amongst the human population and not bothering anyone, and it's hard to see them as anything dangerous. But, when they are lurking in the shadows and victimizing innocent people in brutal and sadistic ways, that makes us feel as if they are the undead creatures that they really are. I'm sick of writers wanting us to believe that vampires are some misunderstood species of loners who just want companionship and understanding.
