"The Holy Vocal Trinity" : Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, and Whitney Houston

It seems that most people on the internet nowadays don't really have high regards for the current generation of singers, particularly pop stars, compared to the iconic legends (Freddie Mercury, Aretha Franklin, etc.) of the past but I think there's plenty of incredibly talented vocalists popular right now.

So like the title says, who do you think are among the best singers and worst singers of the current roster, mainstream or lesser known? And who do you think is overrated/underrated?

Off the top I'd say

Best - Lady Gaga, Florence Welch, Beyonce, & Jessie J.

Worst - Adam Levine, Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lopez, & Selena Gomez.

The problem is that the line is blurring between the best and the worst.

The greatest singers rarely get signed anymore.

Yeah, sadly often marketability beats out talent, but you don't have any current singers you think are best/worst?

I mean, the people being signed now aren't even "marketable" per se. I think the record industry is just showing that they can package garbage and mediocrity and have it sell just as well or better because if packaged right many people will buy anything or think anything is great.

There is so little difference between the best and the worst now. I can't think of anything great that has came out in a very long time. It all is about the same level of bleh. Formulaic.

Ah I get what you mean.

I'm not really asking about their music in general, just focusing on actual vocal ability. For instance, I don't really like Jessie J's music at all but I consider her one of the best current singers.

Not a rap fan, but if Nicki Minaj is one of the biggest rap stars I can believe this.

Yeah, Adele is great. And Leto is the lead singer of the popular band, 30 Seconds to Mars.

His vocals are amazing imo

See, jesse J is just mediocre and is just stealing runs and styles and vocal affectations from past greats. She is generic as heck and derivative. Nothing special at all. Her songs are rife with studio tricks to make he sound better.

Just as mediocre as the rest imo. Live and in the studio.

@lord_adamantium: I disagree, her use of melismas and runs is admittedly overused but her control and ease in using them is genuinely impressive. She has plenty of live performances showcasing her ability. Which greats is she stealing from?

@the_stegman: Actually now that I think of it, Brendon Urie from Panic! At The Disco and Hayley Williams from Paramore are both pretty great singers as well. Maybe those emo kids were onto something.

Adele is overhyped. That raspy smoker voice is like nails on a chalkboard.

In terms of live singing ability and not songwriting, imo some of the best of this generation are Jessie j, Bruno Mars, lady Gaga, Avril Lavigne, Justin Timberlake, sia. I'm missing a few but whatevs.

@johncena69swag: Adele has a wide vocal range, she is gifted with good voice, but her songs are overexposed and it's annoying.

Sia is pretty good too.

Adele is definitely overhyped, I remember a thread a few months back where people thought she was a superior singer to Beyoncé. Great choices with Bruno Mars & Sia, those two are pretty underrated as vocalists.

Adele's vocal range is pretty average though, isn't it something like 3 octaves? Plus she uses pretty bad technique, though she does have a naturally great voice and loads of power.

I actually have idea who those guys are, but yeah, Tori Kelly looks pretty surprised herself and even manages to do a small run at the end.

You are entitled to your opinion and I respect it. I referenced her live performances being as formulaic and "plagiarized' as her studio work. She is stealing from literally dozens of great R&B singers of the past. It is called cultural appropriation. She is a manufactured pop-"clone" figuratively speaking.
