I would get a nice sturdy quartz watch, because they are functionally better then mechanical and can be found for cheap.
Quartz pretty much makes mechanical obsolete. The only 'advantage' for mechanical watches is serviceability. If you want to extend out the life by having it serviced every 5-10 years, then mechs are the way to go.
Interesting story, in the 1970's-mid 1980's, quartz watches became all the rage. The Swiss watch industry refused to go to quartz. They suffered pretty badly. There were 1600 watch houses and that went down to 600. Finally, in the mid-1980's the Swiss watch companies started marketing 'fine craftsmanship' and mech watches with luxury.
A lot of watch companies that used to make utility watches before the 1970's suddenly became luxury brands.
That is why people sometimes wonder why Che Guevara and Fidel Castro wore Rolex's. At the time, they were not seen as status symbols like they are today. They were seen as reliable and tough--kind of like a Casio G-Shock is today.
So, with Sean Connery in the Bond films, when you saw him wearing his Rolex Submariner, it wasn't a status symbol, he was making fun of high society, by wearing a utility watch with a suit. Kind of the same as wearing a G-Shock with a suit today. :)
