I agree with some of the people above, most great characters have had terrible challenges in their lives, defining themselves and personalizing their stories by how they deal with unfortunate circumstances. My two favorite fictional characters are Conan of Cimmeria (his entire life was hell with brief moments of satisfaction in between)....and Matrim Cauthon who is constantly treated as an idiot through out the entire WoT series....then is hanged to get abilities he never asked for to fill a leadership role that he doesn’t want in the slightest.
