Poll: UEFA Champions League Predictions 2019 (32 votes)

FC Barcelona 47%
Juventus 22%
Liverpool 6%
Manchester City 9%
Manchester United 13%
Other 3%

We're back, baby! The UEFA Champions League Round of 16 has come to a wrap, and we're back with the predictions! Like with any other competition, last eight mean things get spicy. At this stage, any team can dream with European glory and, who knows, world glory. It's safe to say that the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League has been the most exciting in recent years; Real Madrid, winners in 2016, 2017 and 2018, have been eliminated after a humiliating 4-1 defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu to Erik Ten Hag's young AFC Ajax squad. It is confirmed that someone else will get the bragging rights come June! Will Leo Messi lead Barça to a 6th Champions League trophy and his personal fifth to match Cristiano Ronaldo? Can Juve get to the final for the third time in five years and be able to win it this time around with Mr. Champions League on the pitch? Will Liverpool conquer Europe after losing last year's final? Will Sheikh Mansour's billions finally seal the deal for Guardiola's City? Might the Red Devils rack up another victory in Europe's most distinguished competition now that Ole's at the wheel? Discuss and be sure to leave your thoughts down below!

@payneintheass:

I watched Liverpool-Porto and Man U-Barça. Can't comment on Ajax-Juventus, though from what I could gather by watching highlights and hearing some tidbits of post-match commentary that Ajax were really unlucky not to come out on top.

As for Liverpool vs Porto, LFC did not give it their all. That was visible. I've obviously watched several other matches played by them and honestly, the second half was particularly underwhelming. Liverpool started off well, scoring through Naby Keita in the fifth minute. Mo Salah missed a sitter and Bobby Firmino made it two. After that, Marega fluffed his lines- twice- and there was that dubious Alexander Arnold handball. In the second half, Mané fired it in right at the start but the flag went up (erroneously, in my view). The rest of the game was essentially Porto trying to score a goal and failing to do so. Not too good but honestly, it suffices.

Man U-Barca... poor. Prolific goalscorer Luke Shaw scored in the 12th minute to give the lead to... Barça. The Catalans had a fairly tranquil first half, with De Gea denying Phil Coutinho and Diogo Dalot squandering the home side's only chance. In the second half, Man U began pounding Barça but couldn't make a single shot on target. Barça players commenced an ongoing cycle of fouls and whenever they were fouled, they took some... time getting up. Messi had a freekick at the edge of the box but screwed it up.

Well, that was that. Europa League was better, truth be told- Benfica vs Frankfurt was amazing.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE- 16/04/2019

Two quarter-final ties have been wrapped up. Barcelona and Ajax are through to the semi-finals.

The Catalan giants, having won at Old Trafford, played the second leg with some sense of comfort. Man United started off on an attacking note, and Rashford hit the crossbar before a full minute had elapsed. The run of play, however, is irrelevant when one of the sides has Lionel Messi. Simple as that. The best player in the world (no question about that) made it 1-0 and Ole's men needed to score two goals, now more than ever. Two goals? Not sufficient. Four minutes later, David de Gea proved why some question him being the best goalkeeper in the world by letting in a Messi long shot that should have been saved effortlessly. The game was as dead as can be, and the nightmare worsened when Phil Coutinho's stunnner made it completely impossible for the Red Devils to do anything other than suffer.

In Turin, 0-0 was enough for Juve to go through even if narrowly. Ronaldo wanted more, though, and the Portuguese forward headed one in to fire Juve in front. Ajax needed to pull off an even greater miracle this time to continue the fairy tale, and through Donny van de Beek, the equalizing goal came. For all their vaunted might, the Italian side was unable to do anything significant and Ajax's willpower proved stronger in the end, with Matthijs de Ligt sealing the deal. Even after finding themselves in this predicament, Massimo Allegri's men were unable to put up much of a fight. Ajax are through to the semis and Ronaldo's going back home.

@ready_4_madness:

True. Spurs are doing far better than I thought they would.

City always tend to choke in Europe. They've only reached the semis in 2016. Apart from that, they always go out in the quarters, or even R16.

@payneintheass:

I agree. Lots of drama too- can only imagine how City fans feel about VAR right now...

Barcelona-Liverpool and Ajax-Tottenham in the semis. Expecting a Barcelona-Ajax final but will refrain from making any conclusive predictions, truth be told...

It's all over at the Camp Nou. Magical Messi blows Liverpool away- a Barça-Ajax final looks likely.

I don't think what happened was due to Kloops tactical genius, it was more of Valverdes poor and naive tactical mistakes and bad choices in the starting lineup.
