I’m a big fan of horror movies because they are mysterious, creepy, and thoughtful.

Top 3 from me, all of them released in 2018!

1. A Quiet Place (2018)

A family is forced to live in silence while hiding from creatures that hunt by sound.

Totally enjoyed this one and I pray they make a sequel!

2. The Meg (2018)

After escaping an attack by what he claims was a 70-foot shark, Jonas Taylor must confront his fears to save those trapped in a sunken submersible.

It is a good movie and the end is awesome. Worth the watch!

3. Halloween (2018)

Laurie Strode confronts her long-time foe Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.

Shlash. Run. Scream. Loved it. Jamie Lee Curtis is a complete badass!

Feel free to share! :)

I liked Halloween and A Quiet Place. Haven't seen The Meg yet. Some of my other favourite horror films from 2018 were Hereditary, Apostle and Overlord. I think Hereditary was one of the best films of the year.

Honestly I don't feel like 2018 had any good horror movies but if I had to pick 3.....

Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich

Slaughterhouse Rulez

La nuit a dévoré le monde

I guess each movie should be analized on it's own. Just because they share that the monster is an animal does not mean all of them are horror or none or them are.

Speaking specifically of The Meg, it didn't feel to me as a horror movie, because IMO:

1.) The tone wasn't scary enough. It felt a bit like a Jurassic Park movie, with animals that are scary, but not so much as to be horror.

2.) The monster was shown right away and had an adventure taste to it, unlike the alien from Alien, that made your skin crawl long before you even saw it.

3.) The atmosphere was not horrorific. Yes, people where scared, but I as the audience did not feel absolute desesperation. It was clear thoughout the movie that Jason was going to kick the Meg's ass and we where all looking forward to it.

4. 5. 6.) The music, the camara angles, the fact that all the main characters survived... The movie didn't leave you with a bad feeling, a horrifying feeling... All the way around, you felt pretty pumped when Jason slized the Meg in two with a knife, cracked a joke and kissed the girl.

Just so to put my words into images, watch these two trailers:

Loading Video...

Now tell me you don't see a very obvious difference in tone, atmosphere, music, sense of danger, fear... And The Babadook isn't specially the most horrorific horror movie. I use it only to ilustrate what I feel horror is vs thriller or even action/adventure/si-fi.

Just watch both trailers and compare.

Tucker & Dale Vs Evil, Feast, and Twilight.

I'm sorry to nitpick but Twilight is a Romantic Drama ;)

Come on, it wasn't really that bad. It's just supposed to be chomp and fun. They didn't pretend to bring us a great film, just some crazy big ass shark eating around. It is what it is.

For now, I would say:

  1. A Quiet Place
  2. Hereditary
  3. Bird Box

But it should be noted that there are some horror movies released last year that I wanted to see, but haven't gotten around to yet (I'm currently on a bit of a binge right now though).
