I just saw this a few minutes ago on the news......a elderly man, delivering christmas cards to his neighbours, was beaten with a edged weapon and left to die in a pool of his own blood, with his stack of Christmas cards by his side.

Seriously, what kind of sick motherf^^ker would do this? Are you dense in the head? Got some unresolved childhood trauma that your too wussy to deal with, have to take it out on an old man delivering motherf^^king CHRISTMAS CARDS to his neighbours? I hope whoever did this rots in a prison cell for the rest of his life and dies slowly.

you know I agree with the above statment of its a dark world but its the only one we have and we can accept that or attempt to change it

that is f^^^^cked up though sounds like a bad horror move scene

the question is how does one remove violence from the world?

prisons do not work they have only served to better criminals in their profession

i think the way to remove violence would be to remove class systems and to remove the feeling that one must have money and possesions to be of any worth in society

No, prison needs to be a proper deterent. Something you really fear. To balance that, people who are honest and decent should see more of a reward in society. Classic carrot and stick approach. Neither America (stick) or Britain (carrot) have their approach right.

agreed however, what do you feel the approach should be we have already tried longer sentences what if we shortened the amount of free time prisoners recieved? In that they must enroll in a program of some kind as part of their sentence in short release them with skills and education trouble is many of them leave prison still skilled only in crime.

Prison should be tough in itself. Break up rocks, clean up crap, random searches. They should end every day inside tired and regretting ever doing the crime. Long sentences also have one important benefit: you can't mug anyone while you're in porridge.

They killed a poor old man for just handing out Christmas cards? That guy who killed that poor old man, should be sent on a one way trip to Siberia and left to freeze over and die. That's just wrong.

@Dread: I like the sounds of that.

@CS: I agree with you-prison should be the worst place on Earth. All day, 24 hours backbreaking labour, then you get 5 hours of sleep, then another 24. It should be just brutal.

My point is, longer sentences, harsher punishments, they don't work. People who commit those types of crimes don't stop to think, "Well, I was gonna kill em but prison is to harsh so I wont."

People want more laws, more laws for this, more laws for that. Laws only affect the people willing to follow them.

I agree. The evil things in this world: violence, racism, rape, etc... have always been here and will always be here. Deterence isn't going to work but you can have some limited success in rehabilitation and even if it wont deter or rehab some people, you definitely have to make people suffer for what they've done.

But more laws isn't going to accomplish much of anything.

Being in prison stops you doing it again (because you're in prison).

I'm against the death penalty because you can never undo it and no system is perfect.

What you are forgetting is, what about the people who committed crimes just serious enough to go to prison? They would get the same sentence as the murderers and rapists.

Eh, my view on the subject of laws and prisons keeps on flip-flopping. Some days I support the death sentence and harsher laws and other days I seem to like second chances.

Anyways, you guys are right-making more laws and whatnot won't solve anything. One day though......someone's going to do something that'll rectify some of this.

I've heard some really sad stories about sh!t like this... One happened a little while ago in my hometown. A blind guy was at the bar with some friends, out on the dance floor and got a little mixed up when he was heading back to his table and walked in behind the bar. A bouncer started yelling at him, he apologized, got out and tried to explain that he's blind and couldn't see where he was walking. The bouncers dragged him to a back room and beat the sh!t out of him and threw him into the street. The police won't do anything about it because he can't positively id these guys by appearance and they were paid off to say that vocal id isn't an official way to id someone. It's a scary world, so you just gotta be cautious.

What was that prison that was one of the most feared places ever and it was on a little island. It held some of the most vicious criminals in history. I heard a story that one night two people got out and they took a boat and just left. They were never found. I think that prison should come back. It was in the x-man movie.

I doubt it, in fact I believe they'd become increasingly more dangerous and the crime rate would escalate. As criminals would go to more desperate measures to keep from getting caught. If death was an effective deterrent to crime, states with the death penalty would have none.
