Hopefully this will give martial artists like myself a good place for discussion.

I currently practice both taekwondo and krav maga. In the past I've done Japanese jiu-jitsu and a few boxing lessons.

Feel free to ask me anything.

@supergoku17: No. But I've also never been in one. In Japanese jiu-jitsu, there is no sparring.

@valorknight: Not at all. In real sparring, nobody throws the high, real fancy jump kicks they throw in comics.

I can agree as someone who also practices martial arts, but I have seen some rare instances of spot on depiction in comics and manga.

For sure but it takes perfect timing & even better luck to pull off any flashy maneuvers but it's not at all uncommon.

What is that system

Eight arm movements and eight stances.

One example for you is an arm movement I have named BAR it is a hybrid between an upper cut and a rising block and an outward block. If you used it as an upper cut it would strike the chin with the forefinger knuckle only. Here are the uses of BAR. You start by learning it as a block.

BAR

BLOCK

Low Outward Block

Mid Outward Block

High Block

CATCH

Between Bar and Body

Reverse Between Bar and Bicep

BREAK

Arm Hyper-Extension Break

Reverse Arm Hyper-Extension Break

STRIKE

Forearm/Elbow Strike

Foreknuckle Strike

Thumbknuckle Strike

Outward Strike

Upper Strike

Extended Strike

Low Strike

High Strike

Mid Strike

Inner Arm Strike

GRAB

Low Outward Block to Grab

Mid Outward Block to Grab

High Block to Grab

Between Bar and Body to Grab

Between Bar and Bicep to Grab

GRAPPLE

Outward Wrap

Low Outward Block to Grab to Grapple

Mid Outward Block to Grab to Grapple

High Block to Grab to Grapple

Between Bar and Body to Grab to Grapple

Between Bar and Bicep to Grab to Grapple

When last I sparred, I went to a Zen Do Kai dojo. I did well against them by using karate sweeps and judo reaps. I also did well because I didn't take composure breaks like they did. They would stop after a clash and I would keep at it at that time and strike them.

The last time I did randori the guy got upset and bit my arm and chest after I grabbed him behind the jaw to move him.

How much did you train using both sides of your body? Meaning doing these techniques right and left "handed"? I realize you have no one to train with now, but do you "shadow box"? Practice the techniques until you've committed them to muscle memory? I realize this can only take you so far without having another person to spar with and develop timing and such, but it's an important thing to do. Another is if one side of your body is slow, weaker, or more awkward, whichever side is your dominant side, do the same technique with your "off" side two or three times more.

Just some ideas.

That sounds cool. I for one would love to train with you, if I knew you in person.

A lot of people underestimate how much you can learn by just training with your friends. Some of the best training sessions I've ever had were with two of my friends (both of whom just so happen to be good boxers) in our university's rec center.

I drilled the hell out of the eight stances, footwork and low strikes, sweeps and reaps. Both sides were good. I felt like I could hold my own with stances and footwork alone. I made up my own Katas to practice.

My arms were not that great.

I will certainly take your advice, Thankyou

I'm a better kicker than striker.

A great game I used to play was sparring while hopping on one leg. First person to touch their other foot on the floor three times loses.

Got it, was just wondering. Blood and sweat tend to be great teachers.

My advise in that case would be to train twice as much on your arms as you do with your legs to even up your weapons and reduce your "weaker" areas. Again, just advice my brothah.

There's nothing really to consider. Boxing is absolutely a martial art. One of the more effective ones in fact...too bad that I always sucked at it.

I do.

Any combat sport or system of self defense is a martial art. Boxing, wrestling, fencing, and every other combat sport is a martial art.

Are you inadvertently holding your breath sometimes? All I can really say is to remember to fully exhale with every strike & follow through, don't gasp or hyperventilate, just a steady inhale through the nose, you don't want to get hit while inhaling through your mouth as it may cause you to gasp or choke.

I do it all the time where I just space out, take a deep breath, hold it & wind up hyperventilating trying to catch my breath.

What combination of 3 or more martial arts do y'all feel would have great synergy together?

  • Xing Yi Quan
  • Baji Quan
  • Wing Chun

&

  • Pigua Zhang
  • Bagua Zhang
  • Weng Chun

&

  • Hapkido
  • Aikido
  • Judo

Are great together & if your thinking it would be too difficult to learn 9 different martial arts you'd be wrong, it's more like 3 because of the striking similarities within each group & by learning any 1 within a group your already halfway there on the other 2.

@diarrhearegatta: I have a different view; I think that instead of focusing on which martial arts have the most synergy, you should focus on which martial arts compliment each other. If you do crosstrain in more than one martial art, you should try to do different things.

I think my crosstraining of taekwondo and krav maga works well; taekwondo is obviously a very sparring oriented art, krav maga is a more self defense oriented, "militaristic" art.

But that's just my view and my personal experience, I'm sure yours and everyone else's is different, and that's fine.

Well sure. Xing Yi Quan & Bagua Zhang are both very different but are both parts of the complete form of Wudang along with Tai chi.

Baji Quan & Pigua Zhang have very different emphasis but are very often taught together.

I put them in groups of three above to separate the three hard styles, the three soft styles & the three grappling styles & put together you've got a pretty well rounded system.

I started at 9 attending a judo/jiujutsu/aikido academy.

When I was 16 I started karate.

I dabbled for years in different stuff like teakwando, tai chi, kung fu while continuing to practice my Japanese arts. I bought a book on bjj and started practicing that stuff.

Then I did world teakwando and went in a few tournaments. Then I did Chinese Kempo Karate. I learned their form and quit.

Then I went to zen do kai where I was mistreated because the visiting instructor kept using me as the demo dummy and when he used me to demo a kind of arm bar I tapped but instead of releasing pressure he applied more and my elbow cracked about ten times and I screamed out in pain.

Then I joined another karate club and quit because it was more focused on kids.

That's my martial arts club history.

I know what that's like. My Hapkido instructor (a man near a third my size) used to love picking on me because I was the biggest, strongest person there & was the best at withstanding, resisting & reversing joint manipulation & throws so I was always his go to guy to fling all over the mat like a ragdoll.

This was my third time there.

The instructor was overseeing two or theee clubs and it was his second week there. To show us the new simplified self defence methods the school was moving into.

I think he was trying to get a feel for me and was intimidated by me in some way even though I had done nothing outstanding.

Well in that case I'm considered a martial artist. I used to fence but have recently given it up in favour of my preferred sport [Swimming]. I was pretty good but lacked the dedication or concentration to achieve mastery.

Some of them dudes just like to single someone out for the fact they're either/or large and/or imposing to try & make an example.
