Are/Were you for or against them at School?
@spareheadone: This, and furthermore I think they're kinda cool-looking.
Where’s the “This issue is dumb, just let schools choose what they want their students to wear” choice button?
Against. I say just let kids wear what they want (within reason).
It helps all socioeconomic backgrounds to fit in with each other. So yes I am for the uniform idea
My bro knows.
It makes no difference. On one hand, maintaining a uniform often builds discipline. On the other hand, uniforms looks dumb and uncomfortable. I'd be okay if the uniform is a clean shirt (any one colour) with a set of working jeans.
A pro for no-uniforms is that if they dress like a clown, then other kids will make fun of them and start bullying them. Start the natural selection process early.
Against the idea. My high school had no uniform but we had very little disciplinary issues and were an A school the entire time. We still had a sense of unity and identity. Uniforms don’t really have the intended effect.
I voted in favor of them but honestly even back in school I was pretty neutral on the idea. I went to a school that required uniforms for a short time and it wasn't nearly as bad as some people made it out to be. Students still had an identity and things felt normal aside from what we wore.
My high school actually asked the students about whether they would want uniforms or not in a survey, and it got shot down because most of the girls were against the idea. That wasn't a surprise though because at the time there was a big problem with female students following the dress code. I imagine it's a pretty similar situation in most schools.
I'm down for it in elementary school and possibly middle school. Helps teachers and other people identify you as a student in that school and doesn't allow room for discrimination.
But in highschool, you should be able to wear what you want imo. Helps them present themselves better. Of course there has to be restrictions.
I'm all for it, if only for the sake of school unity, identity, and pride. But I'd let the students accessorize and customize how they wear it, within (very loose) reason. Heck, if they can find a top and bottom combo in the exact same shades as the school colors, I'd let them wear that too.
I find that creativity and imagination are things a lot of young adults lack once they leave schooling and enter the workforce. It would probably be good to encourage them to express themselves, to an extent, while they're young.
I used to hate the stress of non-school uniforms days, having a uniform just removes that potential for judgement. Also whenever we had non-school uniform days everyone's focus would be really low, in general I think it's true that you work harder with uniforms, it just makes it less casual and reinforces that you are there to work. So I'm absolutely for them.
Against. I say just let kids wear what they want (within reason).
I don't think being too rigid helps in any case. Having a common uniform base doesn't prevent kids to "personalize" their appearances by matching various uniform pieces, by the way they wear it, their hairstyles, makeup etc. It kind of removes the clothing aspect (which we all agree is acessory) from their personality development, which I guess isn't bad.
It also creates a kind of belonging.
Good and bad but it promotes equality in students who come from different economic backgrounds which reduces bullying but it also hinders children from expressing themselves
I'm for parental choice so parents can decide where to send their kids to school and then they can send their kid to the school where they like the uniform, if they want. The idea that a government bureaucrat knows if school uniforms is a good idea for all students is a dumb one. Of course government officials know less about the needs of a student than the parent does. The needs of inner city kids are different than those in wealthy communities, rural communities, predominantly english as a second language communities, etc. Even kids within the same community have very different needs. For some the structure and sameness of a uniform makes sense, for others it doesn't.
It has a social utility value.
Society can easily identify students and would be therefore easier for them to implements prividledges, incentives, protections, and services oriented towards students.
In terms of crimes and emergencies it could readily act as an adequate identifier that can narrow down searches and investigations (assuming schools maintain differences on their uniforms)
It can easily incorporates utility, health, sanitation, and safety functions. (eg: lab gown for lab works, sweater for cold season, indoor slippers to maintain indoor cleanliness)
It minimizes distraction and social inequality inside classroom.
It teachs young people the importance of dress discipline, and rule compliance.
So yes uniforms are good for teaching young people how to act properly as a member of the society.
I'm for it, promotes equality since you all wear the same and discipline as it also teaches to obey rules.
Been wearing uniforms to school ever since I finished kindergarten, still am.
Don't mind tbh as long as the classrooms are well ventilated
Yeah, what better way to illustrate that you're going to have your students be uniform like the products coming from a production line than having them look the part.
I would love to wear whatever I want, but I do support uniform, because think it prevents (at least to an extent) classism and bullying, because there aren't going to be visually observable disparities in student's socio-economic levels in the way they dress.
Against. I've always felt that uniforms were a form of control and prevented kids from expressing themselves.
When I was in the military, for.
When I was in grade school, against.
Currently, I’m against grade schoolers wearing uniforms. They’re not necessary.
Against, and strongly so. Even if I don't personally have to deal with it. The whole idea doesn't make much, or any since to me.
Way against.
Still this.
