The Thin Executioner.
It's a fantasy story about a boy named Jebel Rum, who lives in a bronze age society where violence and executions are all anyone ever cares about, sort of like Sparta or Scandinavia in the age of Vikings. Jebel himself is small and weak, and after being embarrassed by all the stronger, more warrior like men around him, he goes off in search of a fire god who will give him immense strength.
I am not exaggerating when I say that The Thin Executioner is one of the best coming of age stories I have ever read. Not only is it a great fantasy adventure, it's also a great look at what being a man is really about.
JK.
I started reading the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas. It's interesting, my friend recommended it to me.
So far my favorite book series have been Percy Jackson, A Song of Ice and Fire, and The Maze Runner
I'd recommend books like Divergent, Eragon, and The Hunger Games.
REad them all.

The Saga of Darren Shan (aka Cirque du Freak: The Saga of Darren Shan)
It is not sci-fi but an awsome saga. It even got a film, but didn't have the success it should have.
May I ask how old you are?
There's the "Ranger's Apprentice" saga which I think is great, however it's mostly for young adults and people above a certain age my find it too childish for their taste. I read it in high school and really enjoyed it, and I'm re-reading it again now for the sake of nostalgia.
@jb681131: It's enjoyable but overrated as hell.
OT-The Shining, Doctor Sleep or Salem's Lot if you value deep storytelling.
Young Bond, Cherub, Bodyguard series if you want standard action books.

The movie is overrated, the books I don't think so at all.
And talking about classics, no one mentionned Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by the great Philip K. Dick. Story that inspired Blade Runner.
For your information, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is available in comics with the complete original text, by Boom Studio if I'm not mistaking.
@jagernutt: not sure if joking, the bibles has some hard core stories, like jacob wrestling an angel or that one dude whos family was killed by god to prove a point
The bloodiest, filled with the most sex, and most widely distributed book on the planet. And it tells you how to meet God. I read it every day.

I've never even watched the movie, only read the books. I'm not saying it's not good, it definitely is but it's still overrated in my opinion.
OT-I forgot some stuff. The Enemy Series by Charlie Higson was pretty good and not afraid to kill off characters.
Dune.
The Bible
