Don't see how the US loses this one here. In the 60s they kind of had the lead, but they got further and further behind. We had night-vision, etc by this Persian gulf era - the soviets did not yet. Leading to hunting operations day and night vs a more frightened soviet military.
The US in that era had hugely superior air force - but the soviets had more tanks and armor... But as the Persian gulf war proved, the A-10 thunderbolts, and our specialized anti-tank aircraft were phenomenally good, like SUPER good at just knocking out tank after tank, hitting the front of the convoy, the end of the convoy, turning them into pocketed slow targets, and then just bombing them out of areas where tank crews would often try and get out and just run the heck away. This led to the "highway of death" phenomena that wiped out so many soviet era tanks the Iraqis had at the time. So yeah, I don't think their tank advantage will help them, as they have no way of gaining air superiority, and they can't really press the tank advantage with those in the air.
They even had worse subs in that time if this went to nuclear war.
Also, this can be bumped to battles. Just because it isn't about fictional characters or armies - doesn't mean the battle forums don't do this sort of thing. The mods can move it for you if you want.
Then I believe the US would win. Better and more technologically superior weapons, tanks, fighter planes, equipment, etc. Our defense budget was really high and mobilized efficiently. The USSR was already beginning to crumble, not necessarily in the military, but economically and financially. Public opinion for the Soviets to wage war against the superior superpower US in the Middle East would be substantially weak compared to public support in the US. That's an important reason why we prevailed in the Gulf War while the Soviets were bogged down in the Afghan War, their "Vietnam."
