This.
Cowboy Bebop - It doesn't fulfill the gore requirement but it has good story telling and a western (as in cowboy type stuff) theme and style going for it. So that's my recommendation.

High School of the Dead.
Good call, I forgot about that one.
Let's see....I don't think anyone's mentioned Basilisk yet. Demon City Shinjuku and Wicked City are kind of old, but still good.
cowboy bebop is a great anime, i recommend it to everyone if you havent watched it. Trigun is pretty good too. Big O was alright, kinda reminded me of Batman in a way LOL but thats just me.

Fair enough. However, the series, IMO, is short enough that one new to anime can get a good feel for it; it's story isn't the most complex, which isnt a bad thing, as the characters, music, themes, and fights make up for it. I think it's the perfect anime to start with(I know this isn't what you were disagreeing on, just saying lol) with all of these aspects. But, you're definitely right when you say FLCL is one weird show.

Definitely wouldn't recommend that to first time anime viewer.
Also you should definitely check Fate/Zero. It's great.
To be honest, there aren't many animes out there with as much bloody action as Berserk and the ones that are don't really make mush sense. You may wanna broaden your spectrum a bit and look more into story than blood and guts; you'd be surprised what you find yourself liking.

This isn't specifically to you, its to a lot of people, I'm just quoting you because you are the most recent.
I don't know why everyone keeps thinking that I "highlighted" blood and gore, would I like it? Sure. But I never said that it was a requirement. I just want something semi-similar to Berserk that is all.
Also, a lot of people keep saying Cowboy Bebop, tried and didn't like it.
And I lied about Berserk being the only one, I like DBZ too.
@Uno_Oscuro: No problem, I thought the blood and gore was a condition and since you didn't like some of the others (which I find to be good animes) I thought you were looking for a near clone of Berserk; wasn't mindful to tastes being different than my own. The only ones I can suggest are the ones I like, but I like a whole gamut of varying styles. Here's a couple you could try.
Negima: Fantasy/Comedy. Has the "Lone guy surrounded by girls" alotta shows got goin.
Darker than Black: Action/sci-fi.
Black Butler 1 & 2: Horror with some comedic scenes. Has a mild gay undertone, which some people don't like.
Vandread: Sci-fi.
Fairy Tails: Fantasy.
Kaze no Stigma: Modern Fantasy.
Scrapped Princess: Fantasy/Sci-Fi.
These are just a few you might try giving a shot. When watching something new, I give it three episodes before I decide if it's just not for me. Good luck in the hunt.

Monster is great!
No...No its not
Actually, it is. Hate to break it to you, but if you don't like Monster, you have bad taste in anime. At least say why it isn't great; then I can proceed to prove you entirely wrong.
