I remember seeing an article in a magazine about this, by their measurements (record and ticket sales as well as chart time) it was Pink Floyd. In no small part, due to the success of The Darkside of the Moon. The Rolling Stones would be the longest group to stay at the top of the game. It is possible that the Beatles (Note the 'a', they aren't insects. Their name is a pun) are the best selling group, but that is impossible to accurately verify. U2 are great though and are probably one of the more successful over the last thirty years, not to mention one of my personal favourites.

yeah... disco was funny lol

let me put this in money for people... Gene Simmons, lead guitarist for Kiss...

"KISS began life as a band that scared parents and thrilled a generation by mixing circus-like showmanship and horror-film danger with good ol' '70s power-chord rock 'n' roll. Thirty years later, KISS is nothing less than an American classic. The band has earned more gold records -- 24 -- than any American band in history, and bassist/vocalist/demon Gene Simmons can take much of the credit. While the drum and lead guitar seats in the band have seen members come and go over the years, Simmons and partner Paul Stanley have been there throughout, and have turned KISS into not just a band, as Simmons likes to say, but a brand. KISS holds more than 2,000 licenses, including everything from comic books and credit cards to condoms and caskets. Gene is currently worth in excess of $50,000,000"

Thats one member of the band... he is currently worth $50,000,000 on his own...

now thats success lol

I wasn't saying that DotM was the most succesful album ever ever ever, just that it's success was important in establishing Pink Floyd's success. They have also out sold both AC/DC (200 million to 150 million) if all their albums are taken into account. Michael Jackson isn't a group, but he has sold about 250 million. These stats come from wikipedia though so may not be 100% correct.

The Wall, while very successful, didn't match Darkside.

oh, also... He claimed on live TV to have slept with somewhere near 4600 women... something that has later been proven when Gene brought in Photo's of him with each and every woman...

with a tongue like that, i bet he didn't have many complaints lol

True my bad it only beat it in the US but not Owrld wide. However, i can't die that no matter how much I love the Floyd Rolling stones has lasted for so long its ridiculous, and just for that I'm gonna say they are the most successful

I heard that on one of those "Top 40 countdown" radio shows a while back. I looked for a bit on the web and couldn't find any answer on who had the most hits total (not just #1's or top 10's). I looked on Wikipedia and K&TG have a lot of hits (many of them minor), and it looked like the Beatles had about the same. The Rolling Stones would be a good contender too.

Anyways, it seems "most successful' is kind of vague. I'd break it down to hit-wise, album-wise, etc.

I think The Beatles are more of a pop group. Most bands in the 60s, 70s and 80s (and maybe a bit of the 90s) can be deemed very successful. There are probably too much to mention.

I'm backing the Beatles on this one too. U2 is also up there as they still have all their original members after over 20 years, with some of (in my opinion) the greatest albums of all time.

Oh, and Methos, Gene Simmons is the bass player for KISS, not lead guitar.
