1. Setting & World - LOTR - Sorry, while Hogwarts is a much loved place, their is no comparison between London and the rich world of J.R.R. Tolkien.
2. Characters - Harry Potter - While we all love the familiar faces of LOTR, Harry Potter characters are much easier to understand and more relatable while reading about them.
3. Cultural Influence - LOTR - This is a hard one, because a whole section of Universal Studios was opened in honor of Harry Potter, but our favorite wizards and witches probably would not exist without the earlier works of Tolkien.
4. Entertainment - Harry Potter - While I love LOTR, many people will not find interest in the heavily descriptive writing in it, and prefer the constant action and mystery in the HP Series.
5. Cinematic Universe - LOTR - I don’t think I even need to say anything about this. It’s like LOTR was meant to be on screen.
6. Literary Legacy - LOTR - LOTR definitely is not one of the random books about some kids saving the world that you just walk right by while in Books-A-Million.
Overall: While the Harry Potter fan community has greatly grown over time, LOTR wins as a story and world.
