No, all of Eurasia and possibly the whole world was threatened by the Nazis; and the Nazis had terrible human rights abuse issues in the territories they had conquered; and it was all so that everyone would be forced to adapt Hitler's ideology as their own. Granted, the United States was racist at the time in their own right; lets not forget the Summer of 1919, for starters, while the 1920s was the decade of the Klan.

I think war is 'over-glorified' in general. People are becoming more dependent on the military to handle things and I think this behavior has contributed to a sort of 'police-state' that people keep talking about.

Yeah, considering that the vets from the following wars were treated like crap, and their own fathers and uncles, the so called perfect geberation, didn't say a damn thing.

One thing I don't get is people presenting the USA as the good guy of World War Two. The USA did not jump in the war to save the Jews. They did it because of they have allies in Europe due to economic reasons, plus due to the history and heritages within the USA, they are more likely to help out European countries when they are in trouble.

Hitler is popularly presented as a bad guy but USA treated Nazis better than some of their own citizens. USA government were not anti-nazi like some people try to pretend, they were only protecting their own interests. And lets not forget that historically speaking, USA can't stand the idea of anyone trying to conquer the world except them.

Its not so much overglorified as the real reasons for why much of it happened and who helped it to happen has been covered up by the history books.

For US this war was war for resources and for influence, just like it was that kind of war for nazi Germany and Japaneese imperialists. For people of USSR that war was war for survival. For us it's not about glorification of war. It's about respect of deeds and sacrifices of our granfathers and grandgrandfathers. It's sad that now mad nazy beast is once again rising it's ugly head and where - on Ukraine, in former socialist republic...

No. It was probably the largest war in the history of mankind, nearly the whole planet was involved...

And i still stand by the fact that the men and women of that era are the greatest generation ever.

Didn't the Soviets rape millions of German women during their push into Berlin?

No, it's the biggest event in modern history. Might not be comparable to fiction, or maybe even some events in ancient times, but this one is documented.

@ganon15: I never had the chance to ask german women, had you?)

And from what i heard the british and US soldiers did the same. And they don't fought in the most brutal batlles of this war before. They don't fought on their homeland for years and saw destruction of it. What's their excuse except banal "war is hell"?)

@modernww2fare: Well, sort of

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allied_war_crimes_during_World_War_II

During the fighting at Leonforte in July 1943, according to Mitcham and von Stauffenberg in the book The Battle of Sicily, The Loyal Edmonton Regiment killed captured German prisoners.[9][page needed]

C.P. Stacey, the Canadian official campaign historian, reports that on 14 April 1945 rumours had been spread that the popular commanding officer of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada had been killed by a civilian sniper. This rumoured action resulted in the Highlanders setting fire to civilian property within the town ofFriesoythe in an act of reprisal.[10] Stacey later wrote that the Canadian troops first removed German civilians from their property before setting the houses on fire; he commented that he was "glad to say that [he] never heard of another such case".[11] It was later found that in fact German soldiers had killed the Argyll's commander, Lieutenant Colonel Frederick E. Wigle.[12]

Who were these good guys? The Imperial Brits whom bled colonies of resources to enrich their mainland while the colonists lived in squaller? The previously mentioned U.S and their lack of civility towards non-whites during those years? Stalin's USSR, do I need to get into his genocide?

The war was evil vs. slightly more evil.

Because they won? Stalin committed genocide that killed millions. You can argue that the U.S did as well to the Japanese by dropping nukes as a show of force to the USSR. None of the Allies got into the war for a righteous reason.

Thing about Stalin's USSR genocide is that there was no genocide) It's a lie. Propaganda used to demonise him and to validate the Cold War.

@lateralus: They shoud do it. There was no Holodomor (purposed genocide). There was banal famine because of bad harvest and it was much worse in Porovolzhie and Kazachstan. Many people died, that't true, but nothing near millions that are stated in propaganda created after fall of USSR to validate independence of Ukraine via artificial hatred towards USSR that now led to civil war on Ukraine.

Show me any demographic pit during this year, please)

@rubear: Do you think Hitler and Nazi Germany was going to stop before America was taken down? At the end of the day It was a war for survival for the U.S. It wasn't for resources.

America had the Neutrality Acts in place from WW1 that made it hard for America to get involved initially. Keep in mind the majority of Americans didn't want to get involved in another war after WW1 and had laws to maintain peace on the books.

Roosevelt got around them with the Lend-Lease program.

Once American's were killed at Pearl Harbor, kid gloves came off and that is that.

I'm not sure how Hitler would get to America without a fleet and after a long war with USSR. Keep in mind that America is the only major participant of both first and second world wars that gained benefit from it, large economical and political influence while others, well, bled dry. America is also the only major paticipant that don't had large battles on it's ground territory with eception of perhaps Philippines archipelago amd therefore don't suffered from large destruction of infrastracture.
So while some alternative couse of war in favour of AXIS would be a threat for survival of the US the war how it was in reality was not.
