I don't think people truly understand how much of a masterpiece it is.

It's a great movie but calling it the greatest movie of all time? Probably not. It's subjective.

Yeah but '94 was an insane year for movies.

Pulp Fiction, Shawshank, Natural Born Killers...

To Be Honest, I Don't Even Think Forrest Gump Is Tom Hanks Best Movie Let Alone Best Movie Of All Time. I Always Thought Big Was Better Than Forrest Gump.

I'm sure some people consider Once Bitten to be superior. My favorite is Terminator 2 (even though there are unfortunate plot holes in the movie), so obviously I disagree.

If you only watch Hollywood Oscar bait movies, then I suppose it could be.

Among the fart-sniffing film scholars, these are the kinds of movies that are considered great. Unsurprisingly, most people have never heard of them.

It depends, in my opinion for a movie to truly be great it has to revolutionise cinema. For example, films like Birth of a Nation (1915) and Citizen Kane are remembered for the unique way they presented images on screen.

If you believe that Forrest Gump has changed cinema to that degree, then yes I suppose it could be considered great. However I don't think many share that sentiment even through it is widely regarded as a great movie.

It's very good, and holds up well today.

That should be enough, considering the mass FLOOD of movies that have come after it.

Asking a subjective question is just asking people to say no. My favorite movie of all time is Madoka Rebellion, and do I care if people think the same way, no and nor would I expect others to say the same.

Great movie but I bet if you asked 100 people what the greatest movie of all time is you'll probably get at least 50 different answers and only a few might say Forest Gump.

I mean if you think about it saying anything is the best of all time is pretty presumptuous, because it means the best of all past movies, present movies, and future movies. Even if Forrest Gump beats past and present movies I can't in good conscience say it beats future movies because I haven't seen them and it's absolutely possible one is eventually better because we'll probably be making movies as long as we as humans exist and enjoy entertainment, and barring some freak apocalyptic occurrence we'll probably exist a long time (though to be fair though we're trying our damndest to end human life soon what with climate change and nuclear weapons) so the likelihood that a film can beat or at least match Forrest Gump increases as long as we keep going. So I'll say it's possible but not probable, and anyway I like Pulp Fiction better.

@sprior93: Rashomon is pretty famous bro, most people have heard of it.

In my opinion, yes, I put off watching it for a long time as my mom told me it was preachy, but when I finally did it was life changing. Mind you, it's plot etc. really suit me & my tastes,it may not be the same for everyone. I am a very optimistic person & I love running, it's like my life. It sort of proves this, admittedly rather stereotypical belief I had growing up, that I used to tell myself as motivation, that overly nerdy, intellectual, leftist-y people aren't successful in life & well-meaning normal straight-forward guys are.(there were a lot of people in my class who had little fun & studied for hours & hours and got crazy marks & my parents were always pushing me to be more like that). Also, in additional to being inspiring, It is kind of how I want to live my life, which touches me, you don't have to be the guy that maxes every test to be great & successful in life. The subject matter affects me. Also, this whole successful life/rags to riches movie genre is something that I have a great liking for. Even if isn't the greatest movie, which mind you I think it is, It's certaintly the most beautiful & touching movie ever. I've always said a movie is great because of how it does what it is supposed to do, not how many philosophical questions it answers or how popular or not popular it is, some of the best movies are simple & well-known movies, Dr. Strangelove,The Gold Rush, Much of Tarantino's Repertoire, Dirty Dozen, & Mulan are all simple films, yet are better than many complex philosophical 'landmarks'.

Also it has some really simple & beautiful details, such as the fact that Jenny is always running away from Forrest's love & attracted to abusive men is because of the sexual abuse she suffered as a kid & the fact that Gary Sinise's Lieutenant falls in love with an asian woman, showing that he really has moved on from Vietnam & his past, indeed that scene was 1 of the most beautiful for me, it was subtle, but conveyed so much.
