It would be pointless, seeing as no one would be alive to remember it. If it were just a country or two then maybe.

What kind of damage are we talking here... is it nuclear? Are we talking about wiping out all life on the planet or just humanity? And how quick is this death... is it prolonged and painful, or is it more along the lines of a, 'lights out' kinda thing? If it's a non-nuclear, quick, just humanity sorta deal... than honestly i'd be inclined to say yes. In the end everybody dies... i'd just be saving a whole lot of people a whole lot of time... and helping out the environment/planet in the best way possible.

If you an individual, had the opportunity to invalidate and destroy the lives, dreams, nightmares, experiences, identities and personas of every current living creature on Earth, as well the legacies, potential or otherwise, of all those creatures, as well as the efforts, constructions, art, science, philosophy, culture, comic books, ideas of everyone else who has ever lived prior, since blowing up the Earth would also have that effect… would you? Not to mention the landscapes, natural features, habitats, environments, natural formations, man-made formations, so on. Its… the idea of the question hurts my head a tiny bit.

To put it in perspective, if you had the chance to make every cat and dog forcibly drown themselves would you? That still wouldn't even be one percent as bad blowing up the Planet Earth. The only sort of way the latter could be not as bad is under the premise of "fairness" and that Earth explosion might be a faster death than forced drowning, anyway, long way to say of course not. Empathy, its a thing.

@sc: I'm gonna be clear, I just watched an episode of Doctor Who that asked more or less the same question. So I swapped it up a little, and posted it here out of curiosity, looking to have people respond why that would be wrong. I believe it's wrong, and I'd be ready to argue for it, but I'm just looking to see people stand up here. You're the only one who did.

Also, posting this 'cos I don't want to be bunched up with the people who do support blowing up the planet.

@sc: Empathy is a thing, and as such, by killing everything at once in a painless way you're saving them and their offspring the suffering that is existence. How's that for some twisted logic.

@candle_jack: Thank you for clarifying, though I hope I didn't come across as condemning you for asking the question, I think such questions are interesting and good for us to consider, even if the answer is potentially obvious or one sided, the reason the question hurts my head a little, isn't reflective of any incredulity in why or how could anyone ask such a question, more to do with the scope and magnitude involved, in trying to weigh up everything that would be destroyed and loss.

It happens all the time, and a lot, but even loss of a single individual can be quite sad and tragic, as anyone who has ever had a close friend pass away can attest to, but at least you still have their memory, potential comfort with others that knew them too, they may have left over songs, poems, art, music, letters, sculpture, photos. Except now destroy all those things as well, and destroy everyone that ever knew them, and everyone that ever knew them, and everything they ever touched or witnessed, then magnify that over and over. Every struggle of every animal parent to shield and protect their offspring from a predator or violent weather or from starvation, every sacrifice any soldier, brother, or sister has made for the lives of companions, acts of compassion, sympathy, kindness or voided by the conscious decision and will of just one individual? I mean all of us could think about the weight of such a consequence continuously for hours and days, but still probably not have a complete idea and understanding of the level of loss, just because our brains aren't really equipped to deal with such numbers, scale and magnitudes. Its just the way language works, we can sort of grasp at big ideas in more accessible ways.

Oh and Doctor Who, nice! Great series for philosophical questions, ethical dilemmas. Thanks for making this thread.

Pretty good heh heh, I am assuming that you are not an actual advocate for that idea/logic, but it is still fun to address that logic.

So the ability to understand others, how they can feel and experience, means we can better consider the ramifications and consequences of our own actions on others, we can use ourselves as a basis or reference point, and in conjunction with other brain/mental faculties utilize a sense of ethics to weigh up various actions, outcomes, consequences and reasonings behind them. We can make logical steps from an individual in pain, who has prioritized and given the unideal experience of pain as the worst thing, as such the worst thing, that non existence itself would be preferable to the experience of pain, to logically conclude, that destroying everything/everyone else is an act of empathy, but of course that says a lot about that individuals process of priorities/ethics, and reasoning, as much as their empathy. Pain is varied experience, that can even be experienced by running intensely, the flaw is in the individual who doesn't accurately balance ideas of pain against other ideas that may offset pain, even the idea that some individuals make sacrifices, experience pain for higher pursuits/experiences or because they understand the reasons behind pain and find it an acceptable experience in relation to or offset by other experiences. Something the individual in the example should be cognizant of, either by experience, learning or… of course, empathy.

Existence can't be that bad if we have ice cream, baby alpaca and water slides.

That's not true of the vast majority of humans I've encountered. Lots of people do terrible things, but lots of people do good things too.

I feel bad for anyone who says they would. They are probably kidding or not serious, but if they are it's pretty sad.
