How strong is a turtles shell

Two pitbulls tried to bite my turtle.  Could the pitbull had broke my turtles shell and killed it.  This is the size of my painted turtle.

I can't really tell how big it is, but after awhile they might of.

i can answer you straight out that a shark will not bite through a turtle shell. i have shot a turtle with a 303. rifle only to hear a ting.
they have evolved very well into a protective shield.

A shark can bite through a turtle shell and a alligator can crush it to."

whatever turtles you're talking about are piss weak. a sharks tactic for killing a turtle is not crushing its shell because then it can then choke on the particles of the shell whilst digesting, PLUS depending on the size of the turtle, a great white, mako, hammer head or reef shark could crush that turtle pictured but where i live turtles can get up to 2m (3ft) in length with a shell hard as hell. a sharks tactic for a turtle that size is to engulf it in its mouth and drown it in the water.

an alligator however would easily have the jaw strength to crush most turtle species but not all. again, where i am from we have crocodiles and i have seen cases where they have given up because the turtle is too large for their jaw. and im not talkin a small croc, im talking a 12-15 footer.

don't underestimate the strength of a turtle shell. a tortoise shell on the other hand is even stronger because they are more land based, there for having a heaver and stronger shell because they don't require as much swimming.
