George R. R. Martin or J.R.R. Tolkien: Who's better at lore building?

When it comes the Western part of the world, there are no other writers who have made such a fleshed out world other than these two writers. Paolini who? No one remembers. Rowling who? Avoid that Twitter account. Tolkien and Martin are the writers who made readers want to explore every nook and cranny of Westeros or Middle-earth (although some people end up being bored at times. I've known many people who stated this). Everything in the worlds they've thought up has a history.

Tolkien, in my opinion. I find Martin's Essos quite boring.

I find the world Martin's built more interesting, but that's just personal preference. Without Tolkien, there is no Martin. He's standing on the shoulders of a giant.

I think it's too early to say. Once ASoIaF has concluded we'll have a better idea, as it stands there's too many mysteries left unsolved to say

Martin is really good, but Tolkien is the forefather of all Fantasy worlds. He's unprecedented.

Martin's world is impressive, but Tolkien's world basically invented a whole Genre.

They are both in-depth worlds, not the most in-depth as I think WHF and the various DnD worlds are more fleshed out due to their very nature and reason for being [Wargames/RPG focused... put in this way, WHF not only has the different currency each faction and race uses but also their exchange rates and why some races won't even take the currency of others] but as for 'which is better'... what do you prefer?

If you prefer a more fantasy approach with elves and dwarves, demons, etc, then you are going to prefer Tolkien. If you prefer a very low-magic, low fantasy medieval world that feels very 'real' then you are going to prefer Martin's work [If you don't think he shows a pretty solid description of medieval fighting, read the Hedge Knight series and come back]. So.. just depends on personal taste.
