Who's the real master of horror?

short stories/Poetry = Poe
short stories = Lovecraft
But these two are neck & neck in short stories too. Heck, Lovecraft said that much of his early work was inspired by Poe's own work.
all around, i'll say Love Craft has more good stories, but there are a handful of Poe's works that blow anything HP had out of the water.
hard to compete with stories like these, And I've read H.P Lovecrafts "The Thing on the Doorstep and Other Weird Stories" cover to cover; more than once.
The biggest reason most likely prefer lovecraft is because of the writing Poe used in his works is "old english" and a bit cryptic. so lovecraft may have been easier to read but I would say Poe is better.
POE wins by a hair!
iirc poe was a direct influence on lovecraft dat being said i do injoy hp's work more den i do poes however poe is a better writer by pure skill alone
I'm more familiar with Poe and I identify a bit better with his style.
I'd like to explore Lovecraft further though.
As others said, Poe has tales thatbare well known and classical. When doing several writing classes in Colleges, you encounter and read Poe's works. Not once was Lovervrcaft ever mention. There is a reason. Lovercraft is ok but I cannot remember any real tales from him. Poe on the other hand I know a few of his stories and the themes people like Hitchcock and more steal from.
Poe for sure.
Going with Lovecraft. He's essentially a more modern Edgar Allan Poe, who touched a bit deeply and more maniacally on the same subjects that Poe explored.
