short stories/Poetry = Poe

short stories = Lovecraft

But these two are neck & neck in short stories too. Heck, Lovecraft said that much of his early work was inspired by Poe's own work.

all around, i'll say Love Craft has more good stories, but there are a handful of Poe's works that blow anything HP had out of the water.

  • The cask of amontillado
  • The fall of the House of Usher
  • The masque of the Red Death
  • The pit & the pendulum

hard to compete with stories like these, And I've read H.P Lovecrafts "The Thing on the Doorstep and Other Weird Stories" cover to cover; more than once.

The biggest reason most likely prefer lovecraft is because of the writing Poe used in his works is "old english" and a bit cryptic. so lovecraft may have been easier to read but I would say Poe is better.

POE wins by a hair!

Poe. Lover is a bit "meh" IMO. Never really understood the appeal of his works.

I believe Poe to be the better writer, but I find Lovecraft's material more enjoyable to read.

I'm more familiar with Poe and I identify a bit better with his style.

I'd like to explore Lovecraft further though.

  • Edgar Allan Poe in a heartbeat...I love the mysterious, paranormal Gothic,Disturbingly Supernatural,Shadowy type of Horror..
  • Even though i was always fascinated by the Cosmic elements of his stories i never was really a fan of HP....His attempt at trying to tell clever tales about the cosmos always to me seemed like a poor mans attempt at trying understanding deep Sci Fi concepts like the vastness of the cosmos...If i want to read Sci Fi stories and see an authors literary attempt at trying to understand the universe in a poetic sense, ill stick to the all time greats like Issac Assmimov,Arthur C Clarke, Ray Bradbury, H.G Wells,Jules Verne etc...

For this theme, Edgar Allen Poe. H.P. Lovercraft for the father of hentai tentacle fetish, rather than horror, although that could be a matter of perspective.

Best thing of Lovecraft I've read was Thing at the doorstep and some haunted house with zombie girl in it. They were really good, but Ushers or Pit and the Pendulum uterly stomps.

As others said, Poe has tales thatbare well known and classical. When doing several writing classes in Colleges, you encounter and read Poe's works. Not once was Lovervrcaft ever mention. There is a reason. Lovercraft is ok but I cannot remember any real tales from him. Poe on the other hand I know a few of his stories and the themes people like Hitchcock and more steal from.

Poe for sure.

Going with Lovecraft. He's essentially a more modern Edgar Allan Poe, who touched a bit deeply and more maniacally on the same subjects that Poe explored.
