First, the history of egypt is really, REALLY, REALLY long, like more than 2.500 years longs, and that's not counting the pre dynastic years...

It's an incredibly long time, even by a society standard, it's -at least- ten times the existence of the USA, so it's leaving many time to societal and ethnical change in a place that is already strategically placed to increased commercial road, cultural exchange and interbreeding between ethnical groups.

If we add to the fact that history is a tricky discipline, and that there's large gap of unknown, as modern historian tend to write almost only about the people who can read, like noble, priest and the rest, you never got a really full picture.

On the other side, we know that there was a least one Nubian pharaoh dynasty, and the Nubian seemed to be at least partly black, soo...

Apparently, genetic tests confirmed that modern-day Egyptians differ from ancient Egyptians by less than 10% in terms of genetics. In fact, they did some more recently, so it might be even less.

So, yes, ancient Egyptians weren't black, which pisses off black revisionists who want to have something significant to their name, but neither were they pure white, which pisses off white supremacists who want to claim that ancient Egyptians were all Aryans who were later raped by tainted Arab blood.

Some were, some weren't.. saying they (as in ALL) weren't is just as ignorant as saying they were.

Multiple shades existed in their society.

By the American(USA) definition they were "black". They were some shade of brown, did not always have characteristics that matched white people, and plenty had afro hair.

My only question is: why people try to deny they are black so much?? If what people consider "black" fits the egptians then why do you deny they were "black"?

Nobody tries to make the ancient Egpytians seem "black", its just very obvious that they were.

Not all black people look exactly the same and neither do the ancient egpytians but many have characteristics in common with each other that are considered to be "black" by most people around the world.

@dum529001: There are no 'black' or 'white' there are Caucasoid, Negroid, Amerindian, Asiatic and Melanesian major sub-races and their mixes.

By this classification Egyptians and Hyksos were Caucasoid I.E white like the Semitic people, Touaregs and Berbers of today or are you seriously calling Jews and Libyans as black? The inhabitants of southern kingdom of Kush, south from Khem by the Nile river in today's North Sudan, were definitely Black and their kingdom's independency lasted longer than that of Egypt -their ancient rivals. They also briefly ruled over the kingdom of lower Egypt and are better known as the 'black pharaos' but as far as I'm aware they never controlled the united Egypt. Who were first conquered by the Persians and then absorbed into Hellenic world by Alexander the Great after which the Greek Ptolemaic- dynasty took over.

"Caucasoid" refers to a certain skull shape but black people have different shaped skulls. Not all black people have the same skull shape-type. Racist classifications of caucasoid, negroid and mongoloid do not fit the real world. The racist scientist who can up with these classifications were the same one who said some people were less human or more human than other, which is not true.

Africa is the most diverse continent when it comes to variation of gene expression, which is the genes in the human DNA being used in different amounts, but they tried to act like all of Africa is the same.

Ancient egpytians had physical features that people would say are black: Many shades of brown skin-color, physical features that are not characteristically for white people, afro hair, etc.

They were likely pretty deformed. I understand Egyptian royalty practiced inbreeding. Other than that they probably just looked like some middle eastern dudes you go to school with.

At any rate, why do people obsess over them so much?? It's because they built the pyramids, isn't it?? Lots of people all over the world have built monolithic stone structures that boggle peoples minds. You ain't special Egypt!!

@dum529001: short-, long- and medium-headed has nothing to do with that, it's merely just another way to classify populations and you can be of any colour of skin to have one of thosee three major head shapes.

Just because you are personally crusading for all Egyptians to be black doesn't make it a reality.

This is kind of a silly question. Depends on what "Egyptians" you are talking about. The ancient Egyptian civilization lasted 1,000s of years and covered large territories comprising many ethnic groups. During most of that time period some of the kingdom was made up of "black" people. During some parts of the history they were even the rulers, the 25th Dynasty for example.

Next time you're buying condoms and breath mints to go on a date with that girl with make up and high heels, remember that AE invented all of that.

So....you really believe that none of these concepts would have been invented in some way or another during the course of history?? Egyptians must have had magical thinking powers?? You are aware that most of these things have been modified and improved up by all kind of contributions by many peoples over the years, yeah??

At any rate, a lot of the things you named aren't specifically Egyptian creations and were found to be creations of peoples from the Indus and Harappan civilizations. Maybe you should stop policing forums for people you can correct on the internet and go do something worthwhile....like stand in front of traffic or something.

No, they were brown skinned. Olive skinned is Jews, Greeks, and Southern Italians.

Jews are multicolored, as are the others tribes of Israel and the Egyptians. Plenty of Shades of brown. Noticeably brown.

Ancient Israel, Egypt, Kushites and the Tribes of Arabia were multicolored, having any shade of brown and most commonly being very noticeably brown.

The Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Grecians, Romans and Turks were never white. No group on earth was originally white.

And no, not all people of the middle east and North Africa are super light-skinned like the typical Grecian or Roman. Most tribes of people were not known for being light-skinned.

By the way, Greeks and Romans became light-skinned, and eventually white, only by intermarrying with tribes who happened to be white at the time. Greeks and Romans are originally black.

I would also add that being black has nothing to do with what land you live in. Black people are not unique to a single continent.

Japheth, Shem and Ham are all sons of Noah and all of them were black. They all migrated from Babylon into different lands.

Japheth went north of the Holy land While Shem and Ham stayed nearby or to the South.

During the time of Abraham or Moses, there were no "white" or pale-skinned tribe of people.

Over time, certain groups of Japheth's descendants turned "white"(pale). The British, The Vikings, Greeks and Romans, and all the northern tribes of mankind are originally black but at some point turned white(pale) through genetic mutation. Genetic mutation is when some of your DNA molecules get damaged. Everyone has mutation but one of the things this mutation turned people's skin white(pale).

By the way, Greeks and Romans became light-skinned, and eventually white, only by intermarrying with tribes who happened to be white at the time.

Skin color has nothing to do with tribe. Nationality is all about language, common customs, and a common land shared.

What separates the ancient Canaanites, Egyptians, Moabites, Ammonites, Midianites, Amalekites, Edomites, Kushites, Assyrians, Syrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans and others is the common customs of their tribe, not the color of their skin.

There is no such thing as "black history". There is only history.

Race is an idea founded by a German scientist. It has no basis in scientific fact. Don't be a racist. You only make yourself look like a fool.

Calling the Ancient Egyptians "black" is an attempt to reconcile the black experience today with a heritage that was commandeered and whitewashed by "white" oligarchs.

No, they were likely arabic or olive skinned, much like today's Egyptians.

And the people who literally work for a living to figure out what colour they were don't have any solid conclusions, so people need to stop acting like "it's a fact that they were black!".

Much of Egypt is on the Mediteranian Sea. Their power stemmed from their control over the Nile. That said, that control extended for a good long way south at times. They were a major trade hub. That trade included slaves and wives. Chances are, they were as mixed as New York City is now.
