Poll Do you think even a racist WWII soldier still deserved respect by people? (37 votes)

Yes. 57%
No,not a single soldier deserved respect,no matter what war they have fought. 8%
No. 19%
Other thought. 16%

Peopel show respect to these warriors during the WWII battle.

But how about in that time there has few soldiers they just simply hate their opponent's race, look down on them, think our race are superior to them, not because other great reasons(EX:MCU Steve Rogers)so they want join force to kill them.

Do you think this kind of soldiers still deserved people's respect?

You can respect someone's actions separate from them as a person. It also can depend on degrees of how racist and how much they did in the war effort.

Considering that segregation was legally enforced by the American state governments during World War II, and considering that the US military as a whole was segregated, I don't believe you can hold any of the men and women who served during the Second World War to a higher standard based off modern ideology. These service people saved us all from Nazi tyranny, but they don't deserve any respect because the time in which they lived was legally racist? Or, do you only show respect for the black soldiers who served? How about the Jews who served in the military? They're European counterparts were victims of the holocaust, but the Allied Jewish soldiers who fought were white and could ride in the front of the bus. Do you disrespect them even though their brethren were burned and gassed alive for having been born a certain faith? Doesn't every soldier who served deserve respect for their service and doesn't every human being deserve respect in general?

I don't think it'd matter why they hate their enemy back then. So yeah, I'd still send them a degree of respect.

They deserve nothing but absolute respect for their service in WW2. They liberated all of Europe and Asia from the Axis powers. What their racial views or beliefs are don't matter in this sphere because they were united together against a greater and common enemy who seeked to destroy our way of life, regardless of whether they were white, yellow, black, etc.. We wouldn't even be around to enjoy the freedoms we take for granted today if it weren't for the war heroes of the past. Racist or not, those WW2 heroes put their beliefs aside for the greater good, albeit with some tense conflict. They uniquely deserve our great token of gratitude.

Yes, I would still respect them. War is ugly, sometimes racism becomes part of it.

Yes. Only uniquely for the military service of the ones who held racist views. How I view them as a person/individual is another matter altogether.

Depends how you look at it. One race can be superior to another in some way. And vice versa. Race is more than just a skin colour. People should be noticing the differences because there are some. People should not be judged based on it though, but rather

on accomplishments of an individual.

@ccthor: I'd say a desire to kill civilians coupled with actually doing it eliminates any feelings of respect.

Depends how you define respect. Also there are other terms that you can use that might be more appropriate. I watch a show called Viking's, and its loosely based around some real life historical figures. Some of these characters do horrible things by todays standards, and even by the standards of time. Its still easy to admire certain components or aspects of their character. Whilst also disliking/criticizing other types of behavior, especially if you change context. That being a combination of factors, historical context, societal and peer influence, upbringing, mental health and behavioral issues.

The trick is to not treat people with absolutes, or to think they only have admirable traits or only have unlikable traits. Sometimes people have a mixture and we can recognize and acknowledge that mixture, and react/respond accordingly.

A racist soldier who wants to kill innocent civilians, sounds like a potential liability and danger to fellow soldiers he might be working alongside... but depending on how famous/infamous their attitude and actions are, to the public... well, people often have a respect for others in broad general terms. Soldiers, who risk their lives, for our benefit. Some may know specific soldiers, like family, friends, or certain figures given special media attention, or historic significance, but aside from that, its not really about every specific individual or going through every individual with a fine comb looking for flaws. Its a general respect.

No, not if they're just a genocidal psychopath. There's nothing wrong with commending them for any great deeds they may have done.

The Nazi's were responsible for some of the greatest leaps in technology & science in the 20th century but you know...The Holocaust & all that but again on the other hand if not for a Nazi we never would've made it to the moon.

Yes, always respect those who put their life on the line for others regardless of what beliefs they hold.

We are in dire need about this at the moment in America with Confederate statues, people at this point are just straight up ignoring or blatantly lying about the real history.

I'll respect a racist soldier for his duty, but I won't respect him as a person. There were non racist people even when it was legal. Everyone has a choice in their beliefs.

It depends on how racist they were and how they acted upon that racism. I think in most scenarios, their heroic actions should speak louder than their personal beliefs. However, if they are racist to the point of doing violent actions towards other because of their race, then no, I don’t respect them.

I wonder how many think of this question, but only think of it in the framing of American or British/European soldiers? Not every soldier in WW2 was American or British/European...

I will always respect our Wehrmacht during the WWII, one thing is the Wehrmacht and another thing is the National Socialist party in the government.

The National Socialist party, brainwashed the German population because they actually pulled out Germany from the misery, which was orchestrated by the French and the British governments in hand with many Jewish-German banks between 1921-1932 (Hyperinflation in the Weimar Republic) (Germany's war reparations WWI)

'Keynes said the Treaty was a "Carthaginian peace", a misguided attempt to destroy Germany on behalf of French revanchism, rather than to follow the fairer principles for a lasting peace set out in President Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points, which Germany had accepted at the armistice. Keynes argued the sums being asked of Germany in reparations were many times more than it was possible for Germany to pay, and that these would produce drastic instability.

The war and the treaty were followed by the Hyper-inflation of the early 1920s that wreaked havoc on Germany's social structure and political stability. During that inflation, the value of the nation's currency, the Papiermark, collapsed from 8.9 per US$1 in 1918 to 4.2 trillion per US$1 by November 1923. Prosperity reigned 1923–29, supported by large bank loans from New York.'

-

Then, it came the American Great Depression in 1929-1939 which once more again, affected the German market, a lot of Germans died under starvation, others suffered under hunger and when the National Socialists took over, Germany recovered under the German war industry and common industry, which was orchestrated by the National Socialist party (Nazis).

'The Great Depression struck Germany hard, starting in late 1929. There were no new American loans. Unemployment soared, especially in larger cities, fueling extremism and violence on the far right and far left, as the centre of the political spectrum weakened. Germany had paid about one-eighth of its war reparations when they were suspended in 1932 by the Lausanne Conference of 1932. The failure of major banks in Germany and Austria in 1931 worsened the worldwide banking crisis.

So, as known, Germany was among the countries most severely affected by the great depression because its recovery and rationalization of major industries was financed by unsustainable foreign lending. And as mentioned, war reparation obligations reduced investment propensity and, perhaps most importantly, the government implemented a rigid austerity policy that resulted in deflation.'

-

The Wehrmacht had the oath to protect the German people at any cost, as long the German people feel good, as long the German people is happy, the Wehrmacht had the duty to protect the German welfare.

There were small fractions which participated by force in the Holocaust and other fractions in other genocides, which were ordered by the German SS Officers under the National Socialist leadership which made the German people happy, no matter if through political manipulation or not, politics are not the concern of the Wehrmacht as long the German people was happy and welcomes the current political leadership, the Wehrmacht mainly fought for the German people and not for the government and their retrograde views, such as the Holocaust which most German people wasn't aware of what was truly happening.

Brainwashed or not, as long the majority of the German people accepted the National Socialist government, the Wehrmacht had to follow orders and fight for the German welfare.

You shouldn't expect someone of a different era to conform to whatever the current politically correct or moral standards of the day are. And you should be able to see exceptional conduct or courage, even if a person is flawed.

For example, would you respect this person? A man who told homosexuals they could be cured with therapy, literally preached against marital unfaithfulness in church but slept around with women constantly, stole someone else's content for his dissertation, and mislead his church regarding his sexual affairs?

Could you respect someone like that? Could you respect Martin Luther King Jr?
