Yes, there have been a number of studies showing that starting as early as they do makes for less attentive and efficient students IIRC.

@chimeroid: The question shouldn't be "What else do they have to do?" The question should be "What helps kids learn better?"

The county I grew up in had one middle school. I took one school bus to the high school for 20 minutes and then another bus to the middle school another 45 minutes away. Leaving the house early was kind of a necessity.

There's not enough time to fit in an 2 hour morning stretch and workout routine. School was designed by nerds to impede gains.

If school started later many children would be left unsupervised when parents go to work.

No but they do let out too early. Would rather they stay till 5 and get their homework done before they head home.
