There's some hopeful news as far as the numbers, which is that in the last 4 or 5 days, the growth of cases in the US has stopped being exponential and is now a bit more linear. That's good news because it could mean we're succeeding in flattening the curve, and we could avoid having millions of infected people in the next month... as was looking like just last week.

Edit: Still, we're probably going to hit 100,000 official cases in the US by tomorrow. Of course, the real number could be many times that... since we're still not really testing many people thanks to the total failure of our government to take this seriously early on.

Sounds like he's doing the same thing that Trump was doing for weeks, where he said it was all "under control" and would be over in a few days like a "miracle".

Trump is also trying to tell people that they should all go back to work and get the economy back to how it was within 2 and 1/2 weeks... which is absolutely insane and ridiculous.

Bolsonaro likes to arse-lick Trump all the time, so I'm not surprised.

No, he didn't say this. He, under the consent of the of the specialists in his task force, suggested that areas with more manageable and lower outbreaks can start trying to go back to somewhat normal functions while practicing safety. The US is one of the biggest countries in the world, and the majority of of the cases are only centered on certain areas.

Almost everything you post is always exaggerated bullshit. You're like a raving 40 year old wine aunt on Twitter.

Petty insults from jackass Trump supporters dont bother me, especially from people who have to lie to support their political ideology. The funny thing is that your misinformation is easily disproved.

Your false claim:

"[Trump] suggested that areas with more manageable and lower outbreaks can start trying to go back to somewhat normal functions while practicing safety."

Truth:

"the goal is to ease the guidelines and open things up to very large sections of our country... Easter is our timeline" - Trump

On Fox News: "I'd love to have it [the US] open by Easter... I would love to have the country opened up and just raring to go by Easter" - Trump

Also on Fox News: "wouldnt it be great to have all of the churches full... I think Easter Sunday and you'll have packed churches all over our country" - Trump

More of your false statements:

"under the consent of the of the specialists in his task force"

Truth:

When asked about Trump's claim that they could get the country back to work by Easter, Dr. Anthony Fauci (Coronavirus task force) very politely rejected the notion by saying it was Trump's "aspirational projection to give people some hope" and hence not an actual achievable timeframe. It was certainly NOT something that Trump was told or was approved by the experts. That was Dr. Fauci's way of saying it while trying to not upset the President who has a habit of throwing temper tantrums and firing those who disagree with him.

To clarify his stance on the time frame for easing restrictions, Dr Fauci said: You’ve got to be realistic, and you’ve got to understand that you don’t make the timeline, the virus makes the timeline... So you’ve got to respond to what you see happen, and if you keep seeing this acceleration, it doesn’t matter what you say, one week, two weeks, three weeks, you’ve got to go with what the situation on the ground is”.

So clearly the experts on the task force are NOT consenting or even telling Trump that anyone should be back to work or anyone should be going to church... much less "very large sections" of the country or to have "all of the churches" full of people.

Tell me, do you ever get tired of posting the same Fox News misinformation and lies?

You Trump supporters think that if you lie enough times, that if you insult and demonize those who you disagree with, that somehow all your lies and bullshit will become truth? Sorry son, it doesnt work that way. Go back to your bubble where all the other idiots regurgitate the same bullshit to each other over and over.

Jeez what happened to the US numbers? I look away for a couple days and it exploded. Don't let the lower death rate fool you because that's going to rise quickly if the ratio of death/recovered from confirmed numbers holds.

They say this shit will come back each year like the flue does. If we don't find a cure life might never be the same. Between the toll on life and the economy we're screwed.

Yeah I've been watching how things have been going there and it's pretty bad. I'm just hoping that with social distancing measures that they can get the curve flattened there.

Only good news I've seen is that the curve in the US has stopped being exponential and is now growing more linearly. My calculations from a couple of weeks ago showed that if it continued exponentially like it was, we'd be at 400,000+ cases by end of the month. But right now it might get only to around 200,000. It if continues to flatten, then that's at least promising.

But the main issue is that without a vaccine or effective anti-viral medications, there's not much that can be done. We either all stay quarantined until there's a vaccine which will be devastating to the economy, or we periodically let people go to work which will 1) just continue to spread the virus and 2) wont work all that well because a lot of people will not want to do that. I know I will want to continue to stay working at home and probably not go out to restaurants or events. So, the economy still takes a huge hit until there's a vaccine.

The only thing that could have been done here to mitigate this would have been to take this extremely seriously from the beginning. But as we know the Trump administration not only did not take this seriously, they intentionally put out false information and made legitimate meetings and data about this classified so no one would find out, and all that for purely political reasons.

There is a significant chance that this is what will happen.

The impact on the world and/or our way of life can be major.

Or...

We let our weak and old people die to save an economy based on the stock-market. But what would that mean for us as a sentient species???

Fauci says deaths could be over 200,000 even with extreme measures. Without it could be over a million. Can you truly grasp that? sigh I don't like my chances if I get it.

Shower thoughts: Is this what the people felt like during the black plague? Did they think it was the end of the world of society? If society crumbled many people will die just because they don't know how to survive .

@bullpr: Maybe, hopefully. I just feel things won't be the same after this. At least or a very long time.

What do you think of China? Do you think they're lying about their numbers? Also do you thin their sending out faulty medical equipment was malicious or incompetence?

"I just feel things won't be the same after this. At least or a very long time"

I agree. People, politics, business (specially small ones and start-up that will run out of cash in one to two months), the market: we will have to adapt. As a physician I hope the hospital will never again be pressured like it was before this crisis to "do more with less". As a scientist, I hope the neverending cuts to the NIH budget will also stop allowing research to be in a better shape.

"What do you think of China?"

Impossible to know anything for sure except that they demonstarted how to stop (for the moment?) the spread of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus causing COVID-19).

Now we have to check carefully the numbers in both China and South Korea (are the numbers of infected patients growing again significantly in the next days/weeks?).

I'll tell you what... I'd rather be laughing at myself for overreacting to the virus than laugh at those who didn't take it seriously at the beginning of this thread.

Had we paid attention to the situation outside the U.S. we would have seen it coming a mile away. Citizens need to stay informed on their own. If you depend on Fox, CNN, and MSNBC etc. to keep you informed/prepared this happens.

Many were. Many tried to get the word out but were shot down. It's not just a case of not paying attention but one of misinformation and optimism bias.

Edit: Almost forgot politics just to get the other side. That shit is still happening. You'd think just for one second we can come together. Nope.

It's funny that Trump is trying to distract us from his poor handling of the pandemic by bringing up "Obamagate"
