Chess Fundamentals #4: Pawn Play

It is not uncommon to solve many harder puzzles, but miss simple tactical threats of pin or fork. One of the culprit of this is your thinking process. Discipline yourself at following these. These things help me get better result.

Always study your opponent's last move

Don't relax and lose focus. Remember to always study your opponent's last move from the start to the end.

Before you make a move, check if there is a tactical drawback

Let say there is a pawn that you can capture with your queen, but doing so will pin your queen against your king. If you don't check for tactical drawback before making a move, you will lose your queen from a pin!

Look the whole board to see piece positioning

Let say you have a rook at the far corner and your opponent's queen attack your bishop and rook with a double attack. Your bishop is sitting near at your viewing visibility. There is a tendency that you will only look at the side where your opponent place his piece. As a result you will miss that your rook is also attacked by his queen and will blunder it. The important lesson here is always look at the whole board after your opponent makes a move and before you make a move.

If your opponent has threat, check first if you have a stronger counter threat or plan before defending.

Let say your opponent is threatening to capture your queen. But in the given position you can ignore it with a stronger back rank mate. Since you have a better threat, it is obvious you will go for the mate for the win.

An introductory thread on the London System by Big Daddy Alias

Opening as white : the London System

For many openings, depending on the opponent's answer(s) you'll have to play one move or another, or change the order in which you play your moves, and there are usually many variations, often subtle, which all puyt some strain on your memory to recall.
Some openings - called systems - are not as much subject to those kind of variations and subtleties, and what I'll be presenting in this thread is one of those.
Called the "London System", it looks to obtain this set-up at the end of the opening :
It can be achieved against nearly any black answer (1... d5 for those who play the QGC or QGA or the slav, 1.Nf6 for the KID and Gruenfeld players, even against the Dutch - 1... f5). An exception is 1... e5 as played by Dofla, but that is quite inferior for black so you should just think and play sensefull moves and you should be good to go.
There can be "some" subtleties with the move order or even where to put the LSB in this opening - either on e2 or on d3.
Midway through writing this I found a very good study for this, so I'll leave you with this link :
https://lichess.org/study/plnOAuiI
Enjoy and don't hesitate to try it and post in this thread your best games with it ;)

That can happen to anybody. But if you want to improve you must study chess. As simple as solving 2 tactical puzzles everyday can improve your chess.

You can play correspondence game at chess.com

Yeah, I know I just wondered if any other users wanted to play, perhaps even to active this thread a bit more because at the moment it's essentially dead.

Idk if this has been posted before so I cba to wade through every page in this thread. I don't think this video has enough views. It shows how a genius' mind works and IMO Ivanchuk is the greatest player in history to have never won the World Title in classical format. Guy beat Kasparov and Karpov in the same tournament no less...

After a brilliant game by Kramnik against Aronian, Kramnik just suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Caruana.

Yes I think caruana or mamedyarov would be the challenger. The former would be an interesting opponent for magnus and the latter has had a strong showing in the last several months. It is almost certain karjakin would not return

It looks like you will be correct with your prediction as Caruana is in the lead.

Anyone else surprised at the strikes of misfortune Aronian is having in the candidates despite a great 2017 for him?
