Physically, yes he gets his abilities from a chemical but that's really a secondary issue in his story. The reason he was chosen for the program is way more important. He's an honest man who does what he can for what he feels is right, he tries to see the best in people while not allowing himself to be used by them. He's brave and compassionate and fights for what he believes in.
Treating him like a drug addict for taken the Super Soldier Serum is a sign that you clearly don't understand the character. And the SSS is not steroids, its just not. He isn't addicted, it didn't require heavily repeated use, and he only even agreed to it is because it was literally the only way he could join the army and serve his country.
@imperialwizard: No, I am trying to be funny....... But being serious, the SSS is not drug. It is described in the original comic as using a process that used a chemical, radiation and machines. This is completely different compared to drugs like steroids.
I feel there are obvious parallels between the Super Soldier Serum and performance enhancing steroids. And I feel that is just fine. Steve Rogers used the SSS to fight in the second world war, to save the lives of his fellow Americans and free Europe from the grip of the Nazis. Not to cheat in an athletic competition. There is a big difference in trying to win a gold medal and trying to save a continent from madmen like Hitler and the Red Skull.
Actually, Captain America (if he were the real life embodiment of the character) fought for freedom from tyranny, and clearly, not just for his country, but the countries in Europe dominated by a terroristic regime. So did hundreds of thousands of American service people (that's not including the draftees) No on much likes us until they need us, but we're okay with that.
I've seen people argue that he is a bad role model because he represents the physical Nazi ideals of Aryan perfection: white, blonde, blue-eyed and fit.

Exactly. The idiot in question I've seen making this argument can't also tell the difference between depictions of racism and sexism and promotion of racism and sexism, and any work that depicts these are racist and sexist by nature.
@inquisitor_lavellan: Also Cap can't even be said to be made solely as propaganda because the U.S. had yet to even enter the war and were technically neutral at the time. If Pearl Harbor hadn't happened history would have just recorded Cap dropping Hitler like a bit of political satire as opposed to a hero debuting by punching out one of the most evil guys Earth has ever produced.
Steroids are bad because they negativity effect our health. If we had a safe sss which would make us healthier, stronger, faster, smarter... we would be giving it to kids.
Funny thing is that in the movies, if Steve Rogers hadn't been who he was before getting the serum, taking the serum would have turned him into something like the Red Skull.
