Because it's Americas bday. And yeah, but school is typically already out anyways.

It's the day that the Declaration of Independence actually went into effect (it was actually signed a few days prior, on the second I believe) so it's essentially the birthday of the nation. One of the founding fathers (John Adams I think) has a quote about celebrating the signing of the document stating that it should be a day of celebration and that people should set off rockets and fireworks and such.
After some searching I found the quote.
I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more. - John Adams
So people just kind of...did. And haven't stopped since.
@buttersdaman000: @paragonnate: What are you doing today? Watching movies and getting drunk?
@tonymartial: Usually there's a family cook out or get together of some kind on dad's side of the family. Not so much movies, we all sort of invade grandmas yard and play various games outside. Some volleyball and a bunch of other stuff if we make room throughout the day. Fireworks when the sun goes down to round everything off.
