Artist Breakdown- MF Doom?

MF Doom?

So I've recently got into the "Madvillian", and I've got to say he's grown into one of my favorite rapper's. He combines alot of quirks which appeal to me such as

1. A unique homage to Comics and "nerdy" things. MF Doom's persona and distinctive mask is based on the popular marvel villian Doctor Doom. In fact, he is rarely seen these days with his trademark mask. Alot of his samples are taken from old cartoon superhero shows like the fantastic four, Spider-Man....

2. Off the wall beats and production, partly due to the reasons aforementioned.

3. A very dense flow, filled with ryhmes, metaphors and lines filled with double, triple meanings etc.

4. A strong sense of humor in his lyrics, sometimes rather black.

5. He's influenced alot other rappers who I enjoy. I've previously stated that I'm a massive Tyler the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt fan and Odd Future stan in general, so knowing that he was an inspiration behind them is quite cool and I can hear his influence in them, particularly their earlier work. He's also worked with and inspired other guys I f*ck with, such as Joey Bada$$ and Bishop Nehru.

6. He's stayed underground. This is not to say that I'm one who shuns mainstream music, but I feel if Doom did become more popular, the quirky bombastic style that defines him would probably have to change a bit in order to keep with current trends, and I honestly like him the way he is.

Honestly I find it pretty strange I haven't latched on to him earlier. I remember when Lupe Fiasco said that him, Logic and King Los where among the few lyricists who where better than Kendrick Lamar, and it caught my attention (Kendrick Lamar is another Rapper who I really like). Previously I had Rhymes like Dimes (a MF Doom song from his album Doomsday) swimming around on my soundcloud, but I never decided to chase it up.

Favorite Album

MM Food.....

Widely regarded as MF Doom's most qouteable album, MM FOOD (which is an anagram of MF DOOM) is a brilliant album filled with awesome beats, punchlines and wordplay over a theme of food related album titles jokes and other culinary information. Despite the wierd gimmick, I think it works really well and it is one of the few albums I can listen through without skipping a single song..

Favorite Song

Classic Doom. Sampled from the 60's Spider-Man show with skits from the Fantastic Four show of the same era. Lyrics include

Beef rap could lead to gettin teeth capped

Or even a wreath for mom dukes on some grief crap

I suggest you change your diet

So there you have it. If your a rap fan and you haven't listened to MF Doom, I suggest you do so :P

joking aside, I'm a fan of Doom. His style was unorthodox at his time.

And I'm not saying that Macklemore and Taylor Swift are popular because of racism, I'm saying they're popular because they're marketable.

Taylor Swift isn't a good talent. She doesn't have the vocal skills of Ariana or the performance ability of Beyoncé. She's doesn't even have sex appeal like Iggy and Nicki: I would rather do a hole in the wall than Taylor Swift.

She's popular for catchy songs(which she doesn't even write and aren't even as catchy Kate Perry) and because she's marketable. She's marketable because she's the standard of beauty in western society(blonde and blue eyed) and, due to her look, she is perceived as innocent and a good girl that parents and kids can enjoy. If Taylor Swift was any other race, she would be a zero.

Macklemore is popular because he's the white guy with a positive message in rap when people think all rap is about killing, drugs, cars and getting women: marketable that parents and kids can get behind.

If you think race and ethnicity has nothing to do with who is popular in music you have another thing coming. Justin Bieber (no talent), One Direction, Taylor Swift are only popular because they're attractive(by the Western standard), their message is wholesome(sans Bieber) and their songs are catchy.

Anyone can be them.

@dboyrules2011: and just to show I'm not saying it's racism, most rap artists that come into rap usually have to align with a big name so that they can show how marketable they are to the GP.

J-Lo is very marketable to Latin Americans because she came out of the hood and made it. Beyonce won't ever sell as much as J-Lo to Latin Americans even though Beyonce is 100X the performer J-Lo, especially at this age.

MF DOOM is an acquired taste. Everybody can't rock with him. If you don't actually pay attention to what he's saying he will go away over your head. I remember one of my homies came in while I was listening to Beef Rapp and they started laughing because if you're not used to DOOM it sounds like he's just saying a bunch of stuff.

Is that why people dislike him? Because he has a song supporting gay rights? The song had a strong message and deserved the exposure it got. Eminem rapped about domestic violence and got likely exposure. These are worldwide issues that are being addressed, of course it's going to get hype.

Sure, gay issue is important, but it doesn't make him a good rapper.
