The biggest Democratic success in recent memory is a conservative health care plan and the Democratic nominee is center/right. Joe Biden literally used to be pro segregation. I don't think censorship, control, intolerance, etc, are necessarily the defining traits of either the right or left. They strike me as moral failings, and should be found in any extremist.

As I said before, america's overton window has been pulled to the right. Democrats more or less fall in middle of that window. However, on a full scale of political ideas they are conservative. It's not entirely accurate, but if you placed someone like joe biden or barack obama on the political, they'd be somewhere near the lower left corner of the upper right quadrant. A liberal would be in the center of all four quadrants, and bernie sanders is in the lower left
